David Knight - 21st Dec 2016

In keeping with the year itself, narrative videos went harder than ever before in 2016. Our pick of the best narrative videos of the year includes some of the most harrowing and brutal films made to accompany music this year. And, like Mykki Blanco's Highschool Never Ends (above), they also made some of the most rewarding viewing.

Narrative is also a broad church, of course - but as we have a comedy playist, nothing here is particularly in that vein. There is heartfelt emotion, bizarre flights of imagination, great acting performances - and just good old-fashioned storytelling.

I'm sure there's loads we've missed (feel free to point out those we have). Suffice to say, there is some very good work here.
