Midnight To Monaco 'One In A Million' by Nicolas Randall & Marc-Edouard Leon
Luke Bather - 13th July 2016
Nicolas Randall & Marc-Edouard Leon deliver a night-crawling, sleazy and heartbreakingly bleak video for Midnight to Monaco.
Tackling the subject of male prostitution in 80s LA was never going to be pretty, and this video makes every scenario seem sinister and cold. Nobody genuinely smiles, there's no passion in anything seen here and the neon lights of cheap motels illuminate a world cast under Hollywood's shadow with a sickly glow - beautifully shot, it must be said, by DoP Starr Whitesides.
It's not an easy watch, but it's certainly a rewarding one - with Midnight To Monaco's Ricky Ducati convincing in the lead role as the wannabe actor turned hustler. The bookending of the video with a VHS scene adds a sinister, voyeuristic element to a story where the young and the pretty try and thrive and quickly find themselves becoming obsolete.
NICOLAS RANDALL & MARC-EDOUARD LEON:
"The concept of this came from our fascination with an era when Los Angeles was so rife with male prostitution that several blocks of Hollywood were known as Hustle City. We met with real hustlers in order to portray their world with realism and even cast one of them, Christopher Bobal, to appear in the video."
