Ichon 'Fils de Pute' by Helmi
Let's not mince words here: Helmi has made an incredibly brutal video and mission statement for French rapper Ichon.
Fils de Pute – which translates as "Son of a bitch" – has a physical narrative that you certainly don't need to be fluent in French to follow. Based on the turbulent relations between police forces and people of colour worldwide, the video sees Ichon sat in a chair in a police station - chained to the floor. He's on the receiving end of a line of questioning that quickly escalates into something physical and violent. We watch on in horror as one cop brutalises Ichon whilst the other passively watches.
We're reminded that this isn't fiction as we see names and pictures of young men such as Eric Garner and Abou Bakari Tandia, who all died while in police custody. And then, very suddenly and graphically, there's a twist in the tale.
Masterful special effects, camerawork and fight choreography really help to sell the impact of this video. A fearsome, brilliant piece of work.
