Helmi takes the reins for the latest video for Rosalía, and imagines the sadness at the heart of her song Bagdad, with a new twist on&nbsp;a classic metaphor of heartbreak.As she withdraws to a toilet stall in a club bathroom, in the aftermath of a devastating phone call, Rosalía starts to cry. And she keeps crying, the equivalent of crying a river. The water rises in the stall, and&nbsp;Rosalía&nbsp;is resigned to&nbsp;drowning in her own tears.&nbsp;In the way that has marked out all her videos so far, Helmi mixes passion, grittiness and fantasy to make a wholly seductive piece for this&nbsp;sensational Spanish artist.&nbsp;

Let&#39;s not mince words here: Helmi has made an incredibly brutal video and mission statement for French rapper Ichon.Fils de Pute &ndash;&nbsp;which translates as &quot;Son of a bitch&quot; &ndash; has a physical narrative that you certainly don&#39;t need to be fluent in French to follow. Based on the turbulent relations between police forces and people of colour worldwide, the video sees Ichon sat in a chair in a police station - chained to the floor. He&#39;s on the receiving end of a line of questioning that quickly escalates into something physical and violent. We watch on in horror as one cop brutalises Ichon whilst the other passively watches.&nbsp;We&#39;re reminded that this isn&#39;t fiction as we see names and pictures of young men such as&nbsp;Eric Garner and Abou Bakari Tandia, who all&nbsp;died while in police custody. And then, very suddenly and graphically, there&#39;s a twist in the tale.Masterful special effects, camerawork and fight choreography really help to sell the impact of this video. A fearsome, brilliant piece of work.

And indeed, belly shirts have rarely looked so good.Helmi&nbsp;offers up a serving of French&nbsp;sexy-blasé in this perfectly stylish expression of city nightlife and youth searching for love on the dancefloor.&nbsp;The video goes hand-in-hand with the driving beat&nbsp;and builds up individual elements until they become&nbsp;collective patterns.&nbsp;Lipstick application, cigarettes, and bedroom eyes become mesmerising&nbsp;repeat&nbsp;motifs, as we&nbsp;go&nbsp;from&nbsp;buttoning-up the sexiest pair of jeans&nbsp;to taking them off in bed with the night&#39;s catch. The minimalist electronica and deadpan wit of&nbsp;Tiga&#39;s Bugatti has inspired a brilliant video by Helmi - driven&nbsp;by the rhythms of the track, witty, sexy, and the complete&nbsp;opposite of minimalist. The inspirations are essentially, 80s surrealism (particularly the album cover design of Hipgnosis) and alpine sports, conflated into a stream of imagery that offers up more things each time you watch it. Great stuff - and we had a little chat about it, and other stuff,&nbsp;with Helmi...&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;PROMO: The Bugatti promo is wonderfully surreal and provocative.&nbsp; What inspired it?HELMI:&nbsp;Merci. The Bugatti music video was inspired by Tiga, love for the 80&rsquo;s and the new wave. I love working within the universe of the artist so I began to read and watch everything I could on this period as well as the references. It&#39;s more &laquo;pop&raquo; culture than a specific period. I took inspiration from everything I found cool. For me it&#39;s one of the most interesting parts of the job and of course the internet help&rsquo;s a lot. ;)&nbsp;You&rsquo;ve already developed a unique style which is apparent in all four of the videos you&#39;ve made at Division in Paris.&nbsp;Who/what have your influences been so far?My influences are all the 90&rsquo;s music videos I watched as kid. That&#39;s what makes me want to make music videos. All the Gondry, Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham... All these masters have influenced me!What do you hope to achieve over the next year?&nbsp; What are you currently working on?My prospects for the next two years.... To just have more and more fun on each project and meet new cool people. I&rsquo;m writing and testing new concepts but if &laquo;I tell you I have to kill you...&raquo; :) &nbsp;Your ideas are fresh and contemporary - so do you feel frustrated that some artists/labels are more inclined to &lsquo;play it safe&rsquo; with their choice of videos? &nbsp;Has this affected your work?I&rsquo;m not frustrated with my ideas. People are always waiting for new things and sometimes its a good time and sometimes you are too early or even too late. I don&rsquo;t feel any pressure by the label or artist if they don&rsquo;t like an idea. I can&rsquo;t force them but I have to find a better way to sell my ideas. It&rsquo;s amazing when you are on the same page as an artist. This is what happened with Tiga. It was just perfect to work like this...Is there a particular musician/artist you want to work with soon?I would love to work with Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, Notorious BIG, 2-Pac, Amy Winehouse, Freddy Mercury, Elton John...&nbsp;But more seriously I would love to work with&nbsp;top charts artist&nbsp;like Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Daft Punk, Kanye West. Maybe one day! I&rsquo;m listening to a lot of The Arctic Monkeys, Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus... The only important thing &nbsp;for me is if I like the music then I&#39;ll do it, no matter the artist. Except one... ;)&nbsp;Has there been a&nbsp;director who&#39;s work you&#39;ve particularly admired this year?&nbsp; What&rsquo;s your favorite video of the last twelve months?&laquo;Movement&raquo; by Fleur&amp;Manu and also &laquo;CHANDELIER&raquo; by&nbsp;Daniel Askill and Sia. It&#39;s a brave thing to give the brands and the bling&nbsp;a bit of a&nbsp;slapping in this day and age, but Helmi gives it a go in his video for&nbsp;Bonnie Banana feat. Waltaa&#39;s Champs Elysees. It&#39;s a satire on the materialism that pervades modern youth culture - and a brilliant visual bombardment to boot.&nbsp;The aesthetic is street culture, with a heavy nod to the 90s. But most importantly Champs Elysees - both song and video - is all about the importance of appearances,&nbsp;and how it quickly turns into materialism and vanity. And drugs.&nbsp;Interestingly, Helmi and&nbsp;Bonnie and Waltaa developed the song and the visuals at the same time - a very unusual process, but highly effective. Chronicling runaway consumption with hard video FX works a treat. And appropriately the song that says &#39;everything&#39;s for sale&#39; is available to download for free, on weirdata.net.&nbsp;

Here is a story you can enjoy straight from the horse&#39;s mouth, literally! Brodinski and Theophilus London partying in LA. That&#39;s a day you want to see and somehow you can thanks to Division Paris&#39; new recruit Helmi. Through an almost-no-shot-too-seedy&nbsp;promo that takes on a tour of the producer&#39;s day, from business to pleasure (or rather studio to the strip club), Brodinski comes across like a boss who knows how to work hard,&nbsp;play hard. All this from a&nbsp;view&nbsp;where we see everything from a camera apparently implanted in his mouth.The ambitious concept comes&nbsp;from first-time director Helmi - although he is by no means &#39;new to the game&#39;. He has charted&nbsp;a fairly&nbsp;uncommon route,&nbsp;from casting director to director. But as this proves, it&#39;s a&nbsp;move he&#39;s made in very confident style.We had the chance to find out more&nbsp;in our&nbsp;chat with Helmi,&nbsp;what it&#39;s like to work at Division Paris, what&nbsp;Brodinski is actually like to hang out with &ndash; and just how he managed to actually film the promo.As your first project with the illustrious Division Paris, were you nervous at all?Not at all, Division is the best atmosphere I&#39;ve known for work. The ambience is always good, like a positive pressure&hellip;Although not his first video, it&#39;s always great to have some visuals accompanying a Brodinski track, how did this come about? &nbsp;It was during a party of course. I knew him for a while and came up with the concept, he had a track he needed a music video for. A few drinks later we were on a plane to L.A. with all the Bromance crew and Division.&nbsp;I get the feeling Brodinski would be fun to hang out with. Was the aim to show what a typical day in his life is like?It&#39;s not fun to hang out with Brodinski! He&#39;s always on the run, and we had four days to shoot and prep everything, camera tests included.At the same time he was producing his album, meeting people and managing his label. It looks cool from the outside, but trust me that guy is a workalchollic. That&#39;s maybe why he&#39;s here. Beside this he&#39;s the best L.A. guide you&#39;ll ever meet. The town is his.The tone is extremely candid, was this actually the case when shooting?Well let&#39;s say, we didn&#39;t get the right to edit everything we shot&hellip; I know I&#39;m not the only one who just can&#39;t work it out. Did you actually put a camera inside a mouth to film this?It&#39;s funny most of the people think it&#39;s fake. But no, it&#39;s real, no post production, 100% real. Everything was really shot from his mouth. I invented a system to be able to shoot from this point of view with the help of a dentist and a prothesis, and he can drink and eat. No talking, but this was never done before.
