Bat For Lashes 'The Dream Of Delphi' by Freddie Leyden
Rob Ulitski - 5th Mar 2024
Natasha Khan, aka Bat For Lashes, returns with an evocative, ethereal promo for the first release from her new album, directed by Freddie Leyden, with creative direction by hugely experienced director and choreographer Alexandra Green.
Khan's sixth studio album Motherwitch is described as 'an ode to motherhood' - it was recorded during Covid, when the artist gave birth to her daughter Delphi - and this represents the first stage of her exploration of the notion of maternity as she performs The Dream Of Delphi alone on a sun-kissed shoreline and forest.
"This is the arrival of the Motherwitch," explains Green of the concept behind the video. "She moves through her choreography, establishing herself as a new and distinct force in this world. She is imbued with great power, a woman with a solid connection to the natural world, able to summon the elements.
"We get this across through choreography, lighting, and editing, seamlessly blending her movements with visuals of the world around her, things like sea birds, lighthouses, cliffs, and various folkloric symbols and imagery.
"This video is expansive and serves to introduce the three pivotal figures of the film: THE MAIDEN, THE MOTHER, and THE CRONE, all essential to the entire film.
"It's an ambitious concept which toes the line between promo and performance art, delicately exploring the multifaceted transition of motherhood in an ethereal, transcendent way."
