Greg Barnes directs a contemplative promo for Catching Flies.&nbsp;The video for The Last Phone Call pays homage to 1983 film Local Hero, and is inspired by the voice note featured in the track, setting a phone booth in isolation against a secluded beach.The atmospheric setting is elevated by a minimalistic approach to the mise-en-scene, featuring a singular phone box and isolated character.&nbsp;“George sent me the track as I was boarding a short flight, and by the time I landed the idea was formed - this is our fifth collaboration together and whether it’s a mediative piano piece of a high tempo banger, his music is always fast to inspire concepts," director Greg Barnes explains.&nbsp;"The project was inspired by the characterful and beautifully shot 1983 film&nbsp;Local Hero, and its atmospheric seaside phone-booth conversations, mixed with the climactic beach run from Truffaut’s iconic work - The 400 Blows. It was clear from the start we had to shoot this on film; harnessing the depth and textured tangibility of our references."For us so much of the piece hung on getting the perfect casting, and Taylor Kae Knott was exactly that. His training and intuition as a dancer really elevated the part, and our camera crew painstakingly towing a rickshaw over sand worked miracles and heart-rates keeping up with him."To me the song has this aching weight of heartbreak that buoys and shakes free with a heady sense of release, and I wanted the film to embrace and buzz with that uplifting euphoria.”

Lx's lowkey but rewarding video for I Will, filmed in a wintry Brighton.Shot&nbsp;on 16mm, Cee's understated performance in a hotel room, is countered with vignettes&nbsp;of a girls' night out, including a girl who may be the object of his heartfelt lyrics.&nbsp;Lx uses the interplay of the performance and narrative to amplify the feeling behind Cee's words. It's a cinematic,&nbsp;fly-on-the-wall approach focussing on small moments, and its all the more impactful as a result. Very nice work indeed.&nbsp;

Directing duo Broken Antenna reunite with Hak Baker for his collaboration with Ezra Collective member Joe Armon-Jones's new project to create not just a terrific promo but a hugely powerful short doc about gentrification in London's East End.As Armon-Jones and Baker's song Wrong Side Of Town is about being priced out of a&nbsp;traditionally working class quarter of London, the video sees Baker cycling through the area he grew up in,&nbsp;observing the effects of gentrification, but also the surviving parts of a working-class community that continue to define the city.Myles and Gustav of Broken Antenna have addressed this subject with righteous passion and considerable skill. With their experience in mixed media, they use various tools to augment the already excellent camerawork capturing&nbsp;Hak's cycle journey. And they continue to introduce new elements to&nbsp;grip the viewer to their subject&nbsp;- even as the track follows an appealing laidback reggae rhythm - leading to a stirring final section involving interviews with some proud East Enders.[imgtoken data:1]Giving more context, Hak Baker says: “All our lives people have been looking down their noses at us but we used to have the safe haven of the estate, blocks and high roads to commune and be human. Now, we hardly have that. The wealthy come to our area to take over and not take part, shoving us outwardly looking down their biased beaks."Nah mate, not round here. I think it’s time to scream and shout that we’re here to stay and if you don’t like it, you must be on the wrong side of the town.”&nbsp;Ultimately this is a film which potentially transcends its nominal purpose as a pop promo to reach a wider audience, to raise awareness and emotions, putting the issue of gentrification on the political agenda. Something like that does not happen too often. Bravo to all involved.&nbsp;

Charlie Sarsfield directs an intense, mostly black &amp; white&nbsp;promo for rapper&nbsp;Jordy's collab with JME.Split between&nbsp;the artists' performances, the powerful video for Wonderkid uses&nbsp;old CRT TV screens and backdrops to add visual intrigue,&nbsp;transcending&nbsp;the studio environment to create something artful and fresh - featuring a cameo from Jordy's younger brother.It's a well structured&nbsp;visual for two powerhouse artists, imbued with Sarfield's&nbsp;confident direction and visual style, and nicely shot by DoP Courtney Bennett. It&nbsp;benefits from restraint, in getting the most from a few strong set-ups.&nbsp;“The visual is all about perspective," Sarsfield explains. "I wanted to create a visually intriguing backdrop to stage the performance of Jordy and JME, causing the viewer to question what was and wasn’t really there."We tried out some experimental techniques on set to create the subtle illusions you see, and both artists were a joy to work with throughout. Nick Suchak pays homage to Brit zombie classic Shaun Of The Dead, in this riotous&nbsp;promo for Hastings band&nbsp;Kid Kapichi, featuring Madness frontman and national treasure Suggs.&nbsp;In the video for Zombie Nation, the streets are crawling with apathetic undead, but there's still plenty of time for a pint and a Cornetto (a nod, of course,&nbsp;to Edgar Wright's 'Cornetto' trilogy which began with Shaun) before the band and guest star Suggs take refuge in The Carlisle pub on Hastings seafront.&nbsp;This oddball blend of performance and comedy narrative features hilarious&nbsp;practical effects, encapsulated by a grimy, apocalyptic aesthetic.&nbsp;It's a rip-roaring dive into light horror territory, and lots of fun indeed.&nbsp;

Jake Dypka directs his second video for acoustic duo Memorial, and another life-affirming essay of ordinary folk in Britain.&nbsp;In 2021, for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2021/06/24/memorial-heros-death-jake-dypka/71581" target="_blank">Memorial's cover of Fontaine DC's A Hero's Death</a>, Dypka documented the holidaymakers at Butlin's resort in Skegness, on the East coast of England. Now for Corduroy, Dypka's subject is the South Wales town of Port Talbot - home to the famous steelworks - and its residents.Even more so than for A Hero's Death,&nbsp;Dypka and his small crew, including DoP Spike Morris, are&nbsp;unobtrusive observers of the everyday in a local working class community, creating wonderfully evocative portraits of the individuals and also capturing the almost unique surroundings: a town hemmed in by sea and hills, where the steelworks and the M4 motorway flyover&nbsp;are nearly always visible.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;"Continuing the theme from our last promo, I wanted to combine a loose documentary approach with very pared-back photography - a combination of control and happenstance," says Dypka.&nbsp;"The aim was to see what I could do with the most minimal tools at my disposal: a camera, a place, and just reacting to what I found on the day."Unlike last time, I wanted to keep my distance and observe my subjects rather than engineer the situation, which I felt would better reflect the emotional experience of the song."The idea for Port Talbot came about from trying to find somewhere that had strong visual contrasts to reflect the emotional contrasts I felt while listening to the music. At first, I thought it was a happy song about having good times in the sun until I spent more time with it. Later, I thought the song was wearing a mask - happy on the surface with something darker lurking beneath. What Memorial did so well was to move seamlessly between joy and sorrow, and that was at the heart of what I was trying to do with the video."[imgtoken data:2]The director adds that budget constraints meant that shooting on film was not an option.&nbsp;"So right from the beginning it was about getting the most organic feel from digital," he says.&nbsp;"Being just me Spike and Joe (producer) we knew it needed to be small and workable to the conditions."In the end it was between Alexa Mini and RED Komodo. I probably would have preferred the former but Spike pushed for the RED and he was right to do so. We used Zeiss Superspeeds which we both knew would be spot on for it."

London-born, LA-based musician and director Danny Seth directs an intense multi-format promo for London-born, Atlanta-raised rapper 21 Savage - back in the land of their birth.&nbsp;Shot in London, Seth and Savage present some tourist-friendly destinations before revealing a more authentic reality, with the video proceeding&nbsp;as a high-octane&nbsp;mashup of photography, graphics and performance vignettes, slickly cut together by editor&nbsp;Anders Mills at Trim.Seth's vision adds a strangely dreamlike effect to the promo, which pays homage to classic music videos whilst remaining incredibly distinctive and elevated.
