A factory nightwatchman rebels against the boredom of his job, in&nbsp;Bruno Chiecco's compelling&nbsp;dance-based film for London jazz-pop quintet Hydreamia.&nbsp;Beautifully shot on 16mm by DoP&nbsp;Thomas Terminet, Chiecco captures dancer Edd Arnold&nbsp;as he moves fluidly through a deserted factory, finding expression to counter his misery through&nbsp;a vivacious dance routine choreographed by&nbsp;Jakub Franasowicz.&nbsp;&nbsp;"Catch 22 is about the hardness and tediousness of the rat race and how people might rebel against it in their own little beautiful ways," explains Chiecco."Conceptually, shooting on 16mm film was a no brainer. Not only it has this special connection with the 'tangible' through its own physicality, therefore connecting to the realistic aspect of the rat race, but at the same time, it creates stunning images, in turn representing the character’s inner state."[imgtoken data:1]

Ricky Gibb directs an ambitious project for James Smith, with a quartet of music videos woven together in a single narrative, to create an 11 minute short&nbsp;- now released as Common People, Full Film.&nbsp;Impressive in scale, and featuring a a dazzling display of performance, choreography and vibrant set pieces, Common People still feels intimate and relatable, and the narrative elements infused in the concept act as a great guide on the journey.&nbsp;"When James Smith and the team at RINSE approached me to pitch this project, it felt like a creative challenge unlike anything that had been brought to me before," says Gibb.&nbsp;"We discussed something cinematic, surreal, and humorous. Four promos, all woven together as one single long narrative film... Right up my street. I was in.[imgtoken data:1]"Ahead of writing, I spent serious time listening to James’ (then unreleased) debut album, COMMON PEOPLE. Drawing from James’ lyrics, I put pen to paper on a narrative that harnessed the young songwriter’s notions of longing, melancholy, and awkward, fumbling love, albeit framed through a surreal and humorous lens. There was some back and forth. Some tracks got swapped out. There was a touch of jiggery and a peppering of pokery. A few sleepless nights. Maybe 57 budget rewrites. Maybe a year or so later, we had it."As a writer/director, driving a project like this from inception to delivery was exactly the challenge I needed at that point in my career. It forced me to grow and adapt faster than ever before. Navigating longer storytelling, a growing cast of key characters, and the intricacies that came with both really tested the limits of what was possible within the budget and time I had to play with."As always, the talent and grit of the individuals involved were the sole reasons a project like this ever got across the line at all. The production team at KODE worked around the clock to fight fires and keep us on track. Good friend and frequent collaborator Joshua Smith directed the movement of a cast of incredible talent, and I finally had the opportunity to collaborate with DoP Kai Blaimey, another friend in the industry whose work I’ve admired for a long time."Working on projects like this makes my soul sing, and I’m really keen for more. I really relish off these long-term collaboration with artists and long-form creative concepts."

Sekou Abineri directs a mesmerising video for the return of singer-songwriter Joan Wasser - aka Joan As Police Woman - dissecting the anguish that comes with a passionate love affair through dance, on a deserted stretch of beach.Clara Davidson and Emma Aldjia Belabed play the lovers caught mid-argument in their broken-down car, as the black-clad Joan walks by and then observes how their conflict unravels via expressive movement. It's a process which explores unbridled emotion in a controlled and dramatic fashion, to accompany the delicately soulful Full Time Heist.Abineri has made this three-way performance&nbsp;from Joan and the two protagonists&nbsp;wonderfully cinematic, not least through the use of a striking location, on the Sussex coast near Hastings. For the London-born director who has been working in France lately - he directed a lovely&nbsp;video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2023/05/10/aime-simone-give-me-love-or-give-me-nothing-sekou-abineri/81487" target="_blank">Aime Simone</a> last year - it's an impressive return to the UK.[imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]

Directing duo Broken Antenna's latest video for Hak Baker - their eighth - returns to&nbsp;Hak's home turf in London's East End once more. But after the critically acclaimed doc-style video&nbsp;for&nbsp;Wrong Side of the Street, for Hak's collab with Joe Armon Jones,&nbsp;they now swerve into gritty drama.The video for LUVLY features rising star Hero Fiennes Tiffin (The Woman King, After We Fall)&nbsp;and brings to life&nbsp;Hak’s own story, growing up&nbsp;on the Isle of Dogs. The song&nbsp;paints a portrait of a man who cannot receive the love from the woman who loves him - and poignantly, can’t love himself.That's visualised by Broken Antenna - Myles McAuliffe and Gustav Newby - in a whirlwind allegorical tale of a young man (played by Fiennes Tiffin), who on release from prison, quickly falls into his old ways - he falls foul of the local hood, played by&nbsp;Geoff Bell (The Business) - and the effect it has on the relationship with his devoted girlfriend.&nbsp;Through it's breathless narrative style, characterised by the fluid cinematography by Ahmet Husseyin, the ensemble cast and relentless pace forced by the cut by Ben Boullier, Broken Antenna build a full picture of the young man's nefarious situation. But similarly to the likes of Goodfellas&nbsp; - almost certainly&nbsp;an influence -&nbsp;this is not just about the gangsters' shady world. And when the real blow falls, it's not from a 'bad guy',&nbsp;and Hero doesn't see it coming.&nbsp;It's more evidence of a relationship, between Baker and Broken Antenna,&nbsp;that has been the one of the most creatively fruitful of the past few years.&nbsp;

Freddie Leyden continues his collaboration with Natasha Khan - aka&nbsp;Bat For Lashes - on videos for her new album The Dream Of Delphi, with an atmospheric video evoking the off-kilter aesthetic of David Lynch.&nbsp;&nbsp;Khan's performance of At Your Feet&nbsp;takes place in a set-up that&nbsp;echoes the Lynchian atmosphere of the 'Red Room' in Twin Peaks&nbsp;- all the more enigmatic has Khan acts a silent hand choreography for the first half of the song before the vocals start at the halfway point.&nbsp;A hint of smoke or mist passing in front of her suggests what is eventually revealed, that is taking place in a forest at night. And it&nbsp;feels like an abstract snapshot of a story that will unfold further, promising more to come in this visual world. But this in itself makes for an&nbsp;utterly absorbing watch.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;"Natasha described At Your Feet&nbsp;as being about 'the hallucinatory state of being sleep deprived in the night, breastfeeding and rocking the baby'," explains Leyden.&nbsp;"She and the creative director Alexandra Green&nbsp;had developed wonderful choreography for the live show, which I saw in a few videos. It was beautiful, simple, and moving. I wanted to use what had developed organically for this video."The goal became to establish an elevated and surreal setting for this on film. Placing the tiny lone stage deep in the forest seemed like the perfect solution. It felt like we were painting a picture in the woods. Working with cinematographer David Bird, gaffer James Duffy, production designer Richard Nic Evans, and stylist Lucie James, I'm super pleased with the Lynchian composition we were able to achieve."
