MEI 'Happy Man' by Tom Ringsby
Rob Ulitski - 12th July 2021
Tom Ringsby directs a lilting promo for genre-blending artist MEI.Â
Ankle deep in the murky waters of Deptford Creek, the video for Happy Man features the artist reflecting on memories in a blissfully bittersweet performance.Â
The colour palette fits beautifully within the concept, whilst the use of subtle textures in post-production add an ethereal polish to the piece.Â
TOM RINGSBY:
I wanted to visualise that feeling of a light at the end of the tunnel. Â
"When MEI sent me the demo for Happy Man I immediately thought of Deptford Creek. I'd been passing it on my daily walks during the first lockdown and seeing the tide go in and out became a useful reminder that the world’s still spinning.
"This song was so sad, but hopeful at the same time. I wanted to visualise that feeling of light at the end of the tunnel by sticking MEI in the muddy Thames-water, dressed for a red carpet-event, while performing with a heavy-metal bass.
"She smashed it as always - as did the streamlined Intergalactic family who made it happen with us. DoP Henry Gill and colourist Andi H. Chu really achieved our most painterly collaboration so far. Look at that pink and blue water, man. Art!"
