Alice Fassi brings a delightful comedic sensibility - both absurd and touching - to Joy Crooke’s latest, a song that dares to tackle a thorny subject: the effect of feminine beauty on other women.The subject of the song and video is the beautiful, apparently vacuous Carmen - spied upon by an awestruck Joy, disguised as a bush. Carmen (played by Amelia Swaby) is literally heading for a fall. She’s even looking gorgeous in mid-plummet - but then comes her surprising, brilliantly delivered fate: the mannequin-like Carmen shatters into pieces.[imgtoken data:1]The Italian director’s cartoonish approach is a real departure from previous Joy Crookes videos but entirely welcome, primarily as the wacky invention also shares the warmth of the song. She also makes the most of Joy as a performer in the second half of the video, when friendship blossoms with Swaby - by this point playing Carmen’s disembodied head in a box."When I listened to the track, I felt I knew this 'Carmen'," says Alice Fassi. "Carmen actually is the girl we’ve all known at some point: effortlessly perfect, admired to the point of obsession, and quietly envied for having everything we ever wanted – all without lifting a finger."Sometimes it takes almost nothing: a casual comparison, a sprinkle of envy dressed up as admiration, and suddenly we’re bowing down to someone who only exists in our head. Not the real person, of course, but a high-gloss, limited-edition fantasy — prettier, cooler, simply better. And from there, it’s a slippery slope straight into obsession.[imgtoken data:2]&nbsp;"For our music video, the scene of Carmen falling down the stairs is the perfect embodiment of this feeling. Even in her most dramatic downfall, she manages to be… perfect. And though she shatters into a thousand pieces, her influence doesn’t – it simply shifts. In this case, it takes hold of Joy, the singer of the song."With this video, I wanted to explore that familiar feeling of never quite measuring up, of getting lost in the ridiculous race to become someone else entirely, until envy pushes us into surreal territory. My goal was to capture that intimate emotion with a sense of playfulness, wit, and irony, because beneath the absurdity lies something painfully real. It’s a cheeky dive into the beauty standards we’re fed daily, and the strange cult of superficial adoration."

Legendary outfit Suede return to action with a brooding, shoegaze-infused track and a lean and disruptive performance video directed by Chris Turner, aka Favourite Colour: Black.&nbsp;As the moody opening riffs of Disintegrate&nbsp;dissolve into lush layers of synth, the film&nbsp;explores visual erosion in a similar way: beginning with a clean, high-quality base recording, then gradually degrading it through analogue processes until the image becomes abstract and unrecognisable.&nbsp;&nbsp;The video draws from a rich lineage of visual and aural artworks that meditate on decay and transformation, from William Basinski’s Disintegration Loops to Peter Greenaway’s queasy time-lapse sequences in A Zed &amp; Two Noughts, reinterpreted for a resurgent Suede by Turner and his highly experienced DoP Luke Scully.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Like a piece of video art in the vein of Bill Viola, Bruce Nauman, and Marina Abramović, Disintegrate centres on painterly still-lifes - rotting fruit in slow, unsettling time-lapse - and the gradual breakdown of the moving image itself.Key moments of the performance were re-shot through CRT monitors using minDV and VHS cameras inside a blacked-out tent, introducing analogue texture and unpredictability. Cables were physically manipulated to create flickering, rolling glitches — percussive visual elements that echo the sonic violence of performances like Nine Inch Nails’ March of the Pigs.[imgtoken data:2]This process has been continued&nbsp;in post production. The assembled edit was re-processed and re-recorded in layers, so what begins as a sharply rendered performance ends as something fragmented, distorted, and haunting: a meditation on impermanence, memory, and the beauty of decay."[This was] pretty much my dream brief," comments Chris Turner, aka FC:B,&nbsp;"Fantastic track by a fantastic band. Black and white, lo-fi, performance-based and with visuals that disintegrate as the video plays out. All achieved in-camera, utilising progressively lower quality equipment, shooting and re-shooting from screens as the signal was increasingly interrupted. Worship the glitch!"

Gemma Yin directs a dazzling promo for Sugababes that highlights&nbsp;their status as one of the iconic girl groups of British pop.&nbsp;The video for Weeds features a gentle collection of evocative vignettes, mixing performance and symbolic interpretations of growth, displayed through textural overlays and cutaways.&nbsp;It's another strong visual from the group, paying homage to previous videos whilst keeping the same fresh, absorbing edge that made them the icons they are today.&nbsp;Using a mix of projected imagery in-camera, and archival footage in the edit, layered montages mirror the harmonies of the vocal performance and visual synergy of the band. Louise De Nexon directs a hyper-vibrant, grungy promo for Californian rock band Scowl.&nbsp;The video for Fantasy unfolds in a nostalgic amusement arcade, where the group perform amongst neon striplights and vintage games.&nbsp;Whether enveloped by soft toys or rocking out with a helium balloon, vocalist&nbsp;Kat Moss sets the riotous pace, contrasting the laidback energy of the band.&nbsp;A brilliant visual&nbsp;with all the playfulness of vintage rock videos, and a delightfully absorbing aesthetic.[imgtoken data:1]"The idea for the Fantasy video was to explore boredom and the child-like, mischievous ways in which we cope with it," explains Louise De Nexon.&nbsp;"The experience of the arcade was not meant to exclusively represent the idea of fun and innocence. To achieve that dichotomy, we chose to keep the camera style very contained, prioritizing static shots or imperceptible movement."While the energy of the song and the moving lights from the machines make for very stimulating imagery, the underlying tone remains very dry."

Directing team Racer direct a melancholic, softly surreal promo for bedroom dance-pop artist Rian Brazil.&nbsp;The video for People Like U is imbued with a&nbsp;frantic yet poignant energy, blending impassioned performance with experimental camerawork and analogue cutaways.Shot at Dungeness on the Kent coast,&nbsp;Rian mulls over memories of a girlfriend - who is rendered featureless in the video.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]"When hearing the track for the first time, we immediately recognised the fragmented and unorthodox approach to a generic theme, love," explain Racer. "We wanted to reflect this in our film, touching on the idea of a past romance but coming at it from a bizarre, ambiguous angle."We originally recce’d around Dungeness for a different location but when driving through the area we came across this cool looking caravan park that had a real 'liminal space'&nbsp;aesthetic. This served as the perfect melancholic backdrop for some of our favourite parts of the film."It's worth noting too that Rian’s such a great artist to collaborate with - he cares deeply about his visuals and gets as excited as we do through the process. His presence in front of the lens is unmatched too. A dream to work with!"

Directing duo AB/CD/CD direct a cool celebration of femininity in all its variety&nbsp;for singer-songwrirer Cat Burns.&nbsp; The video for Girls is a&nbsp;studio-set celebration and a love letter to women, a tribute to their magic and everything that makes them extraordinary - with Cat Burns as the central figure and guide into her imagination. It's made real by the playful visuals and craft that has long been the trademark of Clement Dozier and Camille Dauteuille, aka&nbsp;AB/CD/CD.[imgtoken data:1]The video plays out in a minimal studio environment, where Cat introduces&nbsp;a number of girls she admires - all distinctive in their diversity.&nbsp;Using match-cuts and choreographed set-ups to match the bouncy rhythm of the track, the directors explore this expansive variety in the cast - where the only common factor is their age, which is around the same as Cat's, and their own very individual beauty."We wanted to create a minimal video celebrating girls," the director duo explain. "The idea was to capture as many different women's personalities as possible within two minutes of the track, following its unique feminine energy. It was mostly about creating a group around Cat's performance.[imgtoken data:2]"To extend the idea of togetherness and connection, we created a loose and playful choreography and old school camera tricks, where everyone could express themselves, with subtle nods to Busby Berkeley - perhaps only us notice those loose&nbsp;references."Given the minimal approach, we wanted to magnify these women and reveal each one's beauty through intimate 16mm camera work.”
