Oscar Hudson is back, directing&nbsp;a&nbsp;fever dream wrapped in a music video for Slowthai.&nbsp;The concept for Feel Away opens&nbsp;rather innocently... Slowthai - real name Tyron Frampton - is with his girlfriend (played by Guindilla Ontanaya) at a maternity ward, shot through her first person perspective.Reality soon takes&nbsp;a distorted plunge into more surreal territory, as the perspective switches&nbsp;and it's Frampton who now has a baby growing inside of him. Cascading into multiple nightmare scenarios, his love interest falls in love with a doctor, his limbs turn into cake and the baby lipsyncs the lyrics via&nbsp;the ultrasound screen.&nbsp;Truly weird and wonderful, the video takes a sharp turn into the uncanny valley and doesn't let up until the final, haunting frame. The use of first person perspective drops the viewer right into the middle of this world, creating an erratic and claustrophobic environment with no way out.&nbsp;

Oscar Hudson&rsquo;s marvellous video for Loyle Carner manages to do something extremely rare these days &ndash; it references the old masters of music video direction, and then extends that vocabulary of visual wonder and make the seemingly impossible happen before your eyes.It begins in lo-fi home video mode, with Carner dozing on a crowded commuter train, before appearing alone in a luxurious express train &ndash; before the huge face of guest singer Jordan Rakei appears in the window. What we think is VFX trickery is in-camera trickery. And from that point on, we&rsquo;re in a train carriage with the Carner and Rakei and fellow passengers, that is constantly changing, even though the position of the camera never moves&hellip;It&rsquo;s certainly possible to describe this visual treat as Gondryesque. It is, but this is no imitation. Its pure Oscar Hudson. As well as bamboozling trickery, there are visual jokes that you won&#39;t get on first viewing. And the subject of the songtitle Ottolenghi is in the video too &ndash; famous chef Yotam Ottolenghi is the ticket collector&hellip;Within in all, Loyle Carner gives another terrific performance here &ndash; and then there&rsquo;s the price of his train ticket from East Croydon to London Bridge. Col3trane ponders the shifting and unpredictable sands of time in Oscar Hudson&#39;s hallucinatory double video for the teenage R&amp;B singer/rapper&#39;s Fear &amp; Loathing and Britney.Taking Hunter S Thompson&#39;s gonzo classic,&nbsp;referred to in the title of the first track, as his jumping off point, Oscar Hudson and his regular cameraman collaborator Ruben Woodin-Deschamps employ&nbsp;some imaginative&nbsp;in-camera techniques for each song, and create a work that tackles the big subjects: life, death, drugs and flowers.&nbsp;&nbsp;First of all, Col3trane finds himself in the desert, his mental state altered courtesy of interesting combinations of camera zooming and pixellation. Then he&#39;s joined by a&nbsp;companion, a Thompson-like figure, transported to the desert after&nbsp;dropping acid, via his bowl of&nbsp;soup.&nbsp;Rather too much acid, as it leads to a decline and demise that Hudson turns into a black comedy of timelapse. And then things start to move back to the beginning...&nbsp;&nbsp;&ldquo;I always wanted to make a double video for Fear &amp; Loathing and Britney,&quot; says Col3trane. &quot;The acid reference is an obvious nod to Hunter S Thompson but it was Oscar&rsquo;s idea for me and the other guy to turn up in each other&rsquo;s trips. Oscar is an amazing talent to work with. The song is about being stuck in a loop that you can&rsquo;t get out of, and he really brought that to life with the visual.&rdquo;

Oscar Hudson returns with his first music video since winning Best Director at the UK Music Video Awards last year, and delivers another gem of in-camera visual effects ingenuity for Young Fathers, shot on a Scottish moor, where all manner of odd things are happening.Now available everywhere, following its Apple Music exclusive, Hudson&#39;s video for Holy Ghost uses thermal image technology to combine a video with a breathtaking look, together with a slow release&nbsp;of dark humour. It&#39;s also a&nbsp;performance video, involving lipsync and choreography,&nbsp;executed over a vast expanse of land - all captured&nbsp;on one camera.&nbsp;That was a rare,&nbsp;high-powered military thermal camera, which led the footage to look infra-red&nbsp;- or as&nbsp;&nbsp;Young Fathers&rsquo; Graham &lsquo;G&rsquo; Hastings has dubbed it: &ldquo;Shot in Infra-Dead&trade;&rdquo; &ndash;&nbsp;and zooming in onto a distant hillside&nbsp;where some very strange things seemed to be happening. As Oscar Hudson explains below, finding the camera and then using it for the purposes of making a music video was a very unusual experience.Shot on location in Perthshire in Scotland, Holy Ghost is a technical marvel, combining cinematography, survelliance and choreography to unique effect. Most importantly, a wicked sense of humour runs through it, from the opening (non-infrared) shot, to the last.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As with Hudson&#39;s previous work, like Bonobo&#39;s No Reason and <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/09/11/young-thug-carnage-young-martha-ft-meek-mill-homie-oscar-hudson" target="_blank">aforementioned Young Martha video</a>,&nbsp;this is very largely executed&nbsp;in-camera.All the scenes beyond the doors of the elevator&nbsp;are there, for real &ndash; only the lift display and buttons were added in post&nbsp;- <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BY_H_JCjbqr/" target="_blank">an ingenious piece of design and organisation,</a> and exemplary work by production designer&nbsp;Luke Moran-Morris, art director Mia James and their team. Oscar Hudson&#39;s first video since Bonobo&#39;s No Reason is another one-shot tour de force. Well, nearly a one-shot.But in true Oscar Hudson style, the video for Young Thug and Carnage&#39;s magic is achieved largely in-camera, and once again it&#39;s the result of a specially-made camera rig - in this case, one that travels through a 360 parabola. It reveals a scene of domestic magnificence, that gets brutal - mostly off-camera. Add some gravity-defing visual flouriths and you have a video that demands to be watched again and again. It&#39;s nuts, and the business.

With his first music video since&nbsp;winning the&nbsp;Best New Director award at the UKMVAs last October, Oscar Hudson has moved squarely into &#39;How did they do that?&#39; territory.His video for Bonobo&#39;s No Reason is&nbsp;one of the rare moments when the viewer starts to question the evidence of their own eyes:&nbsp;the same bedroom of a Japanese teenager keeps appearing, even though the camera keeps moving forward - and it&nbsp;seems to be getting smaller. But that&nbsp;very genuine-looking tracking shot strongly suggests that what we&#39;re watching is real.For Si Green, aka Bonobo, its the latest in a growing body of outstanding music videos. For Oscar Hudson its a rip-roaring start at his new production company home - he recently joined Pulse Films. And we just had to ask Oscar all about it. On-set photos by Christian Cargill[vidtoken data:0]&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Promonews: How did you come up with the idea?&nbsp;And what&rsquo;s the connection to Bonobo&#39;s music?Oscar Hudson: I knew from the brief that the album centred around Si&rsquo;s relationship to physical places and landscapes, with particular regard to the senses of alienation and detachment that he&rsquo;d experienced during his extensive time touring.&nbsp;My idea was aimed trying to link psychological space and physical space directly through a kind of physical metaphor.&nbsp;The idea was developed around the central physical concept of making a series of repeating rooms that shrink in scale around a central character. I got really excited about the prospect of trying to achieve this in-camera and seeing how extreme we take the idea.There was a point where I thought we&rsquo;d shoot the whole thing on lo-fi drain cameras (really narrow pipe-cameras that you push inside sewer pipes) and then also have the camera go inside people&rsquo;s mouths and down into their bodies&hellip; but that was probably a bit too dark and would have taken things away from the physical reality of what&rsquo;s actually possible. We opted to go for the slicker look and I&rsquo;m glad we did.[imgtoken data:1]Why is it Japanese?The aesthetic arose after discovering the Japanese phenomenon of the Hikikomori - young people who find themselves overwhelmed by life and who end up as housebound recluses. This felt like the perfect match for what my concept was trying to do and so very early on became a core part of the narrative we were creating.The Japanese aesthetic also worked really well on a number of practical levels. The low, minimalist furniture suited our low camera angle and was easier to reproduce &amp; scale down on mass and the Japanese pollution masks helped to make our 10 actors appear like the same character.Also the set is packed with all sorts of references to the song&rsquo;s lyrics and to the album campaign itself. Has anything like this been attempted before?I always knew the idea would work in some form or another. But after the early tests we did I realised it was going to work really nicely in the quite slick form you see. The grip system we designed to move the camera is entirely original as far as I am aware. The camera move had such specific and unusual requirements that almost all the grips we spoke to weren&rsquo;t that interested in the project because it fell beyond the realm of what&rsquo;s possible with existing equipment. To me and Ruben [Woodin-Dechamps- the DOP, below] though that was kind of exciting - we really had to think outside the box and get out hands dirty and get experimental.[imgtoken data:3]How big is the set? How long is the camera move? And how did you make the camera move?The set is made up of 18 rooms and was just under 100ft long. We basically rigged our little camera to a flat base plate of wood, covered the under side of this in downward-facing carpet and laid a very smooth lino to drag it across.To keep it in a straight line and to hide the tow wire we cut a one millimetre-wide groove into the floor all the way down the middle of the set and had two nails coming out the base of our camera unit to keep it sliding in the groove. The wire was then attached to the front nail and the camera could then be mechanically wound in from underground whilst the wire could remain hidden.[imgtoken data:4]It looks real. But how much is real and how much is post?I can say with great pride that there&rsquo;s no post FX whatsoever. The whole film is comprised of just two shots: the move forwards and the move backwards. There&rsquo;s one edit but it&rsquo;s a simple match cut, nothing fancy.&nbsp;A lot of people seem to ask how the actor is able to appear in every room. The answer is that it&rsquo;s not one&nbsp;actor, it&rsquo;s 10 actors.[imgtoken data:5]&nbsp;&nbsp;

Oscar Hudson&#39;s piece for the last seconds of The Numbers has a young man doing some cleaning in a square room, while it fills up with sand, like a gigantic hourglass.Oscar Hudson says: &quot;I wanted to make a simple, strange scene - a peaceful moment plucked out from the middle of a dramatic narrative. It&rsquo;s a little film about time really.&quot;

Oscar Hudson started out making skateboarding videos for his friends, before setting off to uni, and since he graduated he&#39;s&nbsp;continued to hone his skills as a filmmaker through a diverse range of projects:&nbsp;documentaries, fiction and non-fiction&nbsp;shorts, fashion&nbsp;films &ndash; and lately,&nbsp;some excellent music videos.&nbsp;His latest for Darwin Deez&#39;s<a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2015/11/12/darwin-deez-mess-she-made-oscar-hudson" target="_blank"> The Mess She Made</a>&nbsp;is based on a&nbsp;playful idea that sees Darwin&nbsp;matching his face with historic figures found on international banknotes. I got a big leg-up into music video biz from&nbsp;Sam &amp; Kim at OB Management - who&rsquo;ve had my back in a big way&nbsp;ever since.What was the first music video you worked on - and what&nbsp;were you doing on that job?&nbsp;It was a video for the old Yorkshire rock band Terrorvision. I was &quot;DPing&quot;&nbsp;(read: waving a 5D around) for my good pal Spike Morris.&nbsp;He&rsquo;s gone on to be a talented DP himself so we&rsquo;ve swapped roles.<blockquote>What equipment do you rely on most to do your job?&nbsp;My notebook. I do a lot of sketches to figure ideas out.&nbsp;</blockquote>Favourite job (or jobs) of the past 12 months?&nbsp;My video for Gilligan Moss&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2015/07/07/gilligan-moss-choreograph-oscar-hudson" target="_blank">Choreograph</a>&nbsp;(below)&nbsp;was a very satisfying&nbsp;one. It was quite a complicated set-based-trickery concept involving&nbsp;lots of identical twins and lots of precisely timed choreography. I&nbsp;was confident but nonetheless the first time you call action and see&nbsp; the whole thing actually working it&rsquo;s such a thrill. The last shot of&nbsp;that video - the big zoom out with the mountain of eggs might also&nbsp;be the best image I&rsquo;ve ever made.[imgtoken data:2]What was the most challenging job you&rsquo;ve worked on?&nbsp;The follow-up video we made for Gilligan [for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2015/09/24/gilligan-moss-ceremonial-oscar-hudson" target="_blank">Ceremonial</a>] was a real tough shoot. It&nbsp;was an outdoor night shoot involving building multiple sets in a field&nbsp;and the dragging of a shirtless man behind a truck. I learnt that you&nbsp;really, really don&rsquo;t want to leave yourselves breaking down&nbsp;nightclub sets in cold dark fields at 5am.What&rsquo;s the Next Big Thing you&rsquo;re working on?&nbsp;I&rsquo;m working on making films inside people&#39;s bodies. It&#39;s gonna be&nbsp;microscopically huge.<blockquote>What would most improve your life?&nbsp;A magic treatment button.</blockquote>Best moment, or fondest memory, of your career thus far?&nbsp;I was really pleased to get to make the Darwin Deez video (below) - he&rsquo;s had&nbsp;such amazing films from some seriously brilliant directors - I feel like&nbsp;a total imposter next to those guys. Also my short film <a href="http://www.oscarhudsonfilm.com/lord--lidl.html" target="_blank">Lord &amp; Lidl&nbsp;</a>screened at the BFI London Film Festival last month - I&nbsp;was pretty&nbsp;proud of that.Worst moment?&nbsp;Back in the early days we had a petty falling out with the lead performer of a film we had just spent a very full-on ten&nbsp;days driving&nbsp;around Europe shooting. We never had him sign a release form (&#39;cause&nbsp;who needs legal shit, right?) and he was threatening to block us&nbsp;from using his image. He was in every single shot. It was a total&nbsp;nightmare at the time but we got it sorted in the end and the film&nbsp;ain&rsquo;t bad either.[imgtoken data:3]Biggest frustration?&nbsp;Budgets, I guess.What&rsquo;s the big issue or issues facing music video makers&nbsp;right now?&nbsp;The competition is hot. But that&rsquo;s a good thing. Gotta be better.<blockquote>Person you most admire?&nbsp;I admire filmmakers that steadfastly refuse to work commercially.&nbsp;It&rsquo;s stubborn and unrealistic and romantic and I kind of envy them.&nbsp;They&rsquo;re like the martyrs of the industry. &nbsp;</blockquote>What advice would you give to someone starting out in&nbsp;music video production?&nbsp;If you want to direct music videos - but you&rsquo;ve never made a music&nbsp;video - then no one is going to ask you to make a music video. So&nbsp;just get started. The sooner the better. Find a band that you like&nbsp;and convince them to let you make them a video. Great ideas don&rsquo;t&nbsp;have to cost much. Surround yourself with interesting people and&nbsp;look outside of film for inspiration - the best ideas come from&nbsp;strange places.Any hot tips on who will be the future stars in music video in&nbsp;the next couple of years &ndash; directors or otherwise?&nbsp;My Gang. They&rsquo;re the best. When we started out we were totally&nbsp;faking it- just making it up as&nbsp;we went along. But now everyone is&nbsp;getting seriously, seriously good at what they do and people keep&nbsp;trying to steal them from me. Aaron Z. Willson is a miracle-working&nbsp;producer. Luke Moran&nbsp;Morris is the most enthusiastic and talented art&nbsp;director - a credit to anything he&rsquo;s involved with. My DP Ruben&nbsp;Woodin-Dechamps has the golden eye.
