Wasia Project 'Isotope' by Charlie and Charlie
Rob Ulitski - 4th Sept 2024
Charlie and Charlie create a hypnotic atmosphere around the brother/sister duo Wasia Project in their impressive short film, showcasing songs from the artists' new EP.
The directors have grasped the challenge set by siblings Will and Olivia - who wanted to make a film, divided into chapters, rather than separate promos for the new release - by placing the pair in a series of enigmatic locations around Los Angeles, from natural landscapes through to abandoned interior spaces.
Drawing inspiration from the visual worlds of Wong Kar-Wai, Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas and the evocative photography of Daidō Moriyama, the film casts Olivia and Will as a singular, fluid character, navigating an enigmatic series of labyrinthine scenarios. The film boasts an otherworldly and enigmatic sensibility, with impressive cinematography by DoP Lidia Nikonova.
Creative director/director Charlie Drinkwater and director Charles Gall - aka Charlie and Charlie - have worked across all aspects of the creative of the current Wasia Project campaign. "[Will and Olivia] approached us with the concept of the EP, and saw every element holistically and narratively, from the photograph on the cover of the record to the short film we’ve made together,” explains Drinkwater.
“After several months of development and writing, the piece was shot over three days in Los Angeles this May,” he continues. “It tells the story of the Isotope, an interchangeable character played by both Will and Olivia. The Isotope is in flux, constantly reaching towards a future or past self, representing the sense of growth and renewal (personal, social, emotional) in the lyrics and themes of the record."
Drinkwater adds that the narrative and wider creative is purposefully lucid and dreamlike but full of Easter eggs that leave space for fans to dive in and explore the visuals and sound as a cohesive whole.
"We shot at a location house in Alhambra, LA which we utilised the rooms across scenes, to give a foreboding sense of isolation. We shot our second day on location in a compound at the foot of Sandstone Peak, one of the highest summits in the Santa Monica mountains. We worked light and well into the night with our fantastic DP Lidia Nikonova and crew, utilising our transport vehicles as light sources."
