Declan J Donovan 'Perfectly Imperfect' by Dan French

Rob Ulitski - 10th Dec 2020

Dan French directs a heartfelt promo exploring body image and self esteem, for rising pop artist Declan J Donovan.

Casting from a pool of actors with their own personal experiences with the subject matter, the video is an authentic representation of the growing sense of anxiety that stems from modern technology.

Shot in a stylised yet understated way, we see a string of vignettes depicting the darker side of social media - and its effect on several young adults - before the film u-turns into an empowering display of positivity, disregarding societal standards and confidently stepping up into their true selves.

DAN FRENCH:

The performances were raw because they were real.

"Telling the stories of real people, Perfectly Imperfect sheds a light on some of the negative effects of social media on people's body image and self-esteem. Mixing the worlds of music promo and documentary to create an honest representation of what it means to be 'perfectly imperfect'.

"As soon as I read the brief I knew there was a chance to create something that would hopefully touch people and make a comment on an aspect of our lives that we only recently started talking about. Social media has begun to be put into the limelight for some of its negative effects on mental health, and it's likely something all of us have experienced whether we are aware of it or not.

"It was an incredible experience to hear all the stories from the people that applied to the casting call and to work with this brave group who were totally willing to share their experiences with me and work to recreate some of these moments on screen. The performances were raw because they were real, and I'll remember those moments on set for a long time to come."
