Yoni Lappin's return to music videos has been a while coming and it also marks a change of image by the artist formerly known as Koffee, now as Orignal Koffee. And together&nbsp;they make her homeland of Jamaica the real star of the show.In the artful,&nbsp;documentary style of portraiture that was Lappin's signature back in the day, with <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2016/04/11/mura-masa-what-if-i-go-yoni-lappin/40701" target="_blank">Mura Masa's What If I Go?</a> and others, the video for RAPID FYAH was shot over four days in Jamaica following extensive location scouting.&nbsp;&nbsp;Filmed entirely on 16mm by DoP Jermaine Edwards (My Father's Shadow, Ish), the video's main subject are the locals - fishermen, schoolgirls, bikers, a marching band and cheerleaders -&nbsp;placed within&nbsp;a series of jawdropping landscapes on the island.Featured artist Skillibeng is also strongly present in the film - a contrast to the&nbsp;laidback almost anonymous figure of&nbsp;Original Koffee - and the video was shot largely on the artists' home districts:&nbsp;St Thomas Parish and Spanish Town, Kingston.&nbsp;Through the alluring combination&nbsp;of the visuals and the music we become immersed in the authentic&nbsp;sense,&nbsp;atmosphere and rhythms&nbsp;of Jamaican life.&nbsp; &nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]

Louis Bhose reintroduces John Newman to the world with a touch of self-mockery, as the soul singer meets the contenders who are auditioning to be him in his upcoming comeback.The video for Merry Go starts in an intriguing fashion with Newman welcomed at a film studio by his manager with the words: 'Welcome to Hell'. It turns out he is encountering&nbsp;an assortment of odd characters who are 'playing' John Newman.It's an engaging satire of the pop business and the real John Newman gives a nicely judged performance observing the activity around him with occasional alarm but mostly resigned equanimity. And finally, he gets involved himself, taking his own place in the group of 'John Newmans' for a dance routine.&nbsp;So this a very welcome return to videos by Louis Bhose too. He is a director with genuine funny bones, who relishes bringing surprising ideas to life.&nbsp;And he's certainly done that here.&nbsp; &nbsp; "John was very clear from the off that he wanted to play with the idea of a big comeback, and the idea of lots of people auditioning to be him was a fun one," says Bhose. "He even went as far as digging out all his iconic jackets from the loft, and letting our supporting cast wear them."I always liked the idea that after an offbeat series of auditions, there would be a fun, sweet moment where they all came together. And so came Harry Price's great choreo - which everyone (including me) learned. Having not made a vid for 18 months&nbsp;or so, it was a really fun one to get back into the groove with. Italian-American director Luigi Calabrese&nbsp;creates a hypnotic visual for Anna Calvi's collaboration with Iggy Pop, with the artists&nbsp;generating considerable&nbsp;heat at close quarters.This is Calabrese's DC of the God's Lonely Man, not the released 'official' version. And he subverts expectations of both artists: Anna, now a smouldering blonde, dominates the unusually passive Iggy (apparently tied to his chair). And it really works. There is a powerful chemistry between them, and exciting degree of intimacy.It's all managed with a very little in front of the camera apart from the performers themselves.&nbsp;Calabrese's use of the camera&nbsp;and lenses, together with the rhythmic edit, ramps up the atmosphere to memorable effect. The first of two videos for returning pop singer-songwriter Maisie Peters by James Ogram sees Maisie on a journey through an idyllic&nbsp;version of the English countryside.The video for Audrey Hepburn starts with Maisie walking in front of a pale pink sky, that we discover is a back projection. Then as darkness falls&nbsp;she follows a bright light through to a country garden or forest at nighttime. It provides&nbsp;a&nbsp;mysterious and magical setting for Maisie's reflections on a fading love affair.&nbsp; "Audrey Hepburn struck me as a song both about the past and the future - about finding a new start by returning home," says Ogram.&nbsp;"It felt right to put Maisie on a journey in this video. Relta directs the official short film for Kojey Radical's new album, charting the artist's self-appraisal at a crucial moment in his life through an ambitious twist on music video conventions. &nbsp;In Don't Look Down -&nbsp;inspired by the album of the same name - Relta builds a world around Kojey that is, on the face of it, highly music video-friendly. It starts with a house party, but the host and star of the show, is struggling to cope with the situation. What follows is impressive, not just for Kojey's performance - which is excellent - including his frankness about experiencing any mental fragility, but that the film continues to subvert expectations.In the film, Relta and team have made a real benefit with their imaginative approach to environment is reflecting Kojey's state of mind. The rooms of a house (or houses) are revealed to be part of a connected studio set. This is clear in the part of the film devoted to the track Rule One&nbsp;- which was also released as <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2025/06/04/kojey-radical-ft-bawo-rule-one-relta/91309" target="_blank">a separate video</a> - but feels more meaningful as part of the bigger picture of the film, where the music video language of the dreamscape comes with a wider message.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Relta also deals with a sizeable cast, almost throughout the film, who are playing the both the important people and minor figures&nbsp;in Kojey's life, which also highlights both the pressure and the rewards. It allows guest performers Bawo and Ghetts&nbsp;to fit seamlessly into this world. But ultimately it all serves to push the theme of Kojey's personal journey, and his embracing of real-world responsibilities, in a way feels both personal and entirely&nbsp;relatable.&nbsp;So this is&nbsp;an inspired and accomplished piece, and an excellent effort from all involved.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]
