Donald Glover and Hiro Murai take us back to the 1930s&nbsp;and a bygone era of twinkled-toed entertainment in the brilliant&nbsp;return of Glover's musical alter ego Childish Gambino.&nbsp;The six-minute video for Little Foot Big Foot sees Glover and his pals as a young musical act, arriving at a down-at-heel nightspot in Depression-era rural America, to perform their sizzling song-and-dance act to the denizens - and gaining barely a flicker of a response until a dramatic turn of events changes everything.&nbsp;With a vintage noir style and slick choreography inspired by all of the greats - channelling the mid-century black entertainers such as the Williams Brothers -&nbsp;&nbsp;and it's a dazzling comeback and the first of several visuals planned for new album Atavista, which also acts as the soundtrack for Glover's upcoming film&nbsp;Bando Stone &amp; the New World.it also brings Hiro Murai - and DoP Larkin Sieple - back to music videos to show us what we have been missing. In one of the most enthralling examples of AI-fired creativity to be seen in music videos towards the end of last year,&nbsp;Tristan Holmes animated more than&nbsp;10,000 frames generated on AI program Midjourney to create a stunning visceral experience for the Chicago-based heavy metal band Disturbed.Crucially, Holmes successfully manages to harness the possibilities of the technology to work with his own purpose and vision for the epic track Bad Man - the band's protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;The video is an assault on the senses, but the director's own painterly visual aesthetic shines through.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]The process took Holmes over a month of intense work, but the results are stupendous.&nbsp;“This video has been a labor of love and I am super proud to share it," Holmes has said."Inspired by the plight of the Ukrainian people it is a poignant and powerful comment on the world today and the rise of autocracy not only in Eastern Europe but in other parts of the world."<div>&nbsp;</div>

Greg Ohrel directs a hugely powerful promo for Puerto Rican rapper Residente's This Is Not America, taking aim at police brutality, corporate greed&nbsp;and the effects of US cultural hegemony - and acting as both sequel and critique of the seminal video for Childish Gambino's This Is America.&nbsp;&nbsp;Remarkably poignant, the heartwrenching concept is unflinching in its display of brutal injuries, destruction of land and the forced separation of families, and cleverly parallels opposing ideas through match cuts and split screen effects.&nbsp;An undercurrent of anger is palpable throughout the video, and the portrait-style vignettes interspersed throughout act as a reminder of the people and communities these issues are affecting, whilst also acting as a statement that the victims refuse to be oppressed.Many of the scenes in the video are based on real political&nbsp;events that are well known in Latin America, but not so much elsewhere - including when Puerto Rican independence fighter Lolita Lebrón shot&nbsp;live rounds into the air&nbsp;inside the US Capitol Building in 1954, in protest to&nbsp;violence inflicted the US government on Puerto Rico (including bombing);&nbsp;and (in the video's most horrifying scene) the assassination of Chilean folk singer Victor Jara,&nbsp;killed for singing songs against General Pinochet's US-backed military coup&nbsp;while imprisoned in Estadio Chile in 1973.&nbsp;Like This Is America, the video was produced by Jason Cole and Danielle Hinde at Doomsday Entertainment. And like Donald Glover and Hiro Murai's polemic about the reality of&nbsp;violence and fear in Black people's lives in the US, this video is also&nbsp;attracting serious debate and commentary, in a growing number of YouTube reaction videos, and other, <a href="https://www.latinorebels.com/2022/03/21/residenteamerica/" target="_blank">more scholarly articles</a>.Comparisons are inevitable, but&nbsp;Residente's This Is Not America differs from This Is America in being essentially more politically-based: the rapper's&nbsp;focus is upon the resilience of the oppressed, and their willingness to resist. LAMAR+NIK welcome Taylor Bennett to their world, placing the Chicago-based singer in settings the directing duo charactistically hand-built,&nbsp;while he performs Don't Wait Up.Bennett's performance&nbsp;was filmed in Chicago - remote directed by Jesse Lamar High and Nik Harper in Oklahoma and Seattle respectively - and then edited to appear on the phone throughout the video.&nbsp;It's the real phone that passes through each of the everyday scenarios that the pair painstakingly created in miniature using cardboard, card-stock and their trusty&nbsp;hot glue guns.Furthermore each scene is a like a celebration of the world before the pandemic, as Bennett goes from recording studio to busy nightclub, strolls through a pack of paparazzi,&nbsp;and finally takes a trip on the crowded subway - all made from cardboard.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;"Textures were printed off and then applied to the cardboard structures to make the sets feel life-like," explain L&amp;N.&nbsp;In addition to this, 1:12 scale miniatures were also sprinkled into each scene to add even more realism."And Jesse and Nik explain further in this splendid BTS video.[vidtoken data:0]

After making the&nbsp;era-defining This Is America,&nbsp;Hiro Murai's next music video project&nbsp;was always going to be a big deal. And this does not disappoint. Murai's collaboration with FKA Twigs is an&nbsp;action-packed epic affair, embracing Chinese martial arts. It is a brilliant, and beautiful - and brutal - showcase for the artist's unique talents.In characteristic&nbsp;Murai style, and with the help of regular collaborators like DoP Larkin Sieple and colourist Ricky Gausis, the grittily mundane is transformed into something breathtaking. As with so many of his music videos, this is shot entirely at night and again Murai shows his mastery of the specific atmosphere that night creates in the quieter parts of a cityscape. And in this case, the city is London.In a late night café, Twigs encounters a male alter-ego (played by Teake), and their assignation quickly becomes violent. A terrifying swordfight begins within the cafe, with Twigs' and her rival's athleticism taking them headlong through its shopfront window. Then&nbsp;their fight moves across quiet suburban streets, via the&nbsp;swooping, sensual movements of Wushu martial arts - so the conflict begins to hint&nbsp;at a complex backstory to their relationship/rivalry.&nbsp;But within the café again, at close quarters it gets brutal again and there is an extraordinary&nbsp;outcome - arguably not for the fainthearted.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]This climactic moment, where Twigs is divided by a samurai sword, is the most obvious contribution of VFX in a piece which, as with much of Murai's work, employs extensive VFX without drawing huge attention to itself. He worked in close collaboration with a team at MPC in Los Angeles to create those crucial sequences. Not only the&nbsp;choreographed fight sequence across buildings, epic smashes through shop windows, and that dramatic final scene,&nbsp;but digital matte painting was also used throughout to enhance the gritty backdrops. &nbsp;The result is a majestic piece of work, a reminder of Murai's phenomenal body of work in the medium.&nbsp;The same applies to Twigs. It is further evidence that she is a great action hero(ine)&nbsp;in the making.

This is a new era for Bieber, and a statement of what's to come.&nbsp;

Savanah Leaf has given contemporary relevance&nbsp;to&nbsp;Marvin Gaye's What's Going On in her powerful music video for the 1971 classic.In the description under the video on YouTube she writes: “We shot ‘What’s Going On' in Detroit and Flint Michigan, we wanted a place that resonates with the song and the history of Motown, while also remaining relevant to the sociopolitical issues in the music video."The music video took four days to shoot, but I travelled to Michigan a couple weeks early to find the right people. It was very important for us to find real people that resonated with the stories, rather than casting actors. We wanted the history of the song and the communities we filmed in to come through in our video."For example, Steve Smith, who plays the blind man in our music video, actually worked for Motown when ‘What’s Going On’ was originally recorded. The church we filmed in was one of the first establishments to set up a water station for the Flint community - they would hand out clean water and raise awareness on the ongoing crisis within the community."In addition to Steve Smith, we had the opportunity to feature other influential community figures in our music video, including Karen Weaver, the mayor of Flint, and pivotal activists that have been involved in the Flint Water Crisis for many years. One such activist in our music video is named Ariana Hawk, who, along with her young son, was featured on the cover of Time Magazine during the height of the water crisis. She ended up moving from Flint, only to return in order to continue the fight for her community. To this day, the Flint Water Crisis has yet to be resolved, and Ariana continues to be a strong activist in the movement."The point is that this is a historic song for an important moment in history, and what’s beautiful is that it’s message is timeless and universal. It’s about human emotions, human relationships, and a coming together. My hope is that our music video will remind people to continue asking the question Marvin Gaye asked in 1971.”&nbsp;<div>&nbsp;</div>
