In Barbara Anastacio's powerful short film made in collaboration with artist and composer KINLAW, a lone worker is caught on the testing platform of an automotive wind tunnel, as the machine powers up, being subjected to it's escalating force. The video for Ride To Ride picks up on a cinematic tradition that goes back to Eadweard Muybridge's work revealing the mechanics of motion in the 1870s. It follows that thread to the present, a time where we’re measured and optimized constantly. "I wanted to film the moment measurement becomes erasure, and sit inside it long enough that it stops feeling like a metaphor," says Anastacio. "Virilio said that to invent the ship is to invent the shipwreck. What, then, have we invented in building machines to measure and improve us?"[imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]

DJ Snake arrives in Cairo to hold a big party - and check out some of the local performers - in this fast-moving romp by Omani director Chndy.Following the tradition of classic Snake videos launched by the DANIELS-directed classic for Turn Down For What, the video for Cairo Express has a similar cartoonish, knockabout energy, with great characters. And it dials up the flavour and energy of Cairo to the max. It's also another DJ Snake video produced by BIRTH on what appears to be a global tour - following the epic Patience, shot in Senegal and Algiers, and the New York-set video for Noventa. And even if the AI-assisted climax in Snake's carnivalesque gig may not be for the purists, it's another banger.[imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]

Nacho A. Villar captures the bittersweet ache of exile in his video for TIF, taking the rapper back to his Algerian homeland.Filmed in an Algerian coastal town and the vastness of the Sahara desert, Villar - of former duo BRBR - brings his distinct signature of global storytelling to a film that unfolds as a sweeping, modern fable on youth, heritage, and displacement. The emotional heartbeat of Villar's film is anchored by rising young actor Youssef, whom the director guides through a devastatingly raw, poignant breakout performance, while the director positions TIF as a silent, haunting observer traversing an Algeria of infinite richness. The tension builds toward its final fracture, where the abrupt end of collective youth directly mirrors the heartbreaking loss of the homeland itself. It's another powerful directorial statement from Villar, formerly of directing duo BRBR, following his haunting coming of age-related story for Milo J's 'Niño, released earlier this year.[imgtoken data:1]

Nacho A. Villar directs a compelling tale of grief for Argentine rapper and singer-songwriter Milo J. Set against the raw landscape of Suncho Corral, the video for Niño captures the daily lives of Nicolás Campos and Nemías Suarez, two local teenagers navigating the streets, homes, and cemeteries of their village.Through lingering, slowly unfolding shots, each cinematic vignette by DoP Michal Babinec reveals itself like a living painting, imbued with tragedy, passion and regret. Moving beyond simple observation, the project offers an intimate and organic portrait of rural Argentine youth. Between melancholy and vitality, it explores the delicate balance of staying or leaving in a place where every corner holds a memory.Beautiful filmmaking from Villar, a member of the BRBR collective - which also includes Babinec - based in London, Bratislava and Madrid. [imgtoken data:1] [imgtoken data:2]

Luis Rojo - of film collective BRBR - directs an ambitious promo for DJ Snake featuring J Balvin, shot on the streets of New York. The video for Noventa blends cinematic performance setups with docu-style portraits and footage from the Brooklyn neighbourhood, placing real fans and residents in the heart of the action. Breathlessly paced with some fun edit trickery, its an immersive and hugely effective visual accompaniment to the track. And the video was made under challenging circumstances, especially when it came to permits."The team was determined to film in the heart of a Hispanic neighborhood, with real people, to truly capture the strength and energy of this vibrant community," reveal Birth, Rojo's production company. "The shoot didn’t go unnoticed, helicopters flew overhead, and police units showed up, clearly on edge. But in the face of a joyful, united crowd that only wanted one thing, to sing along with the two artists, there was nothing the authorities could do. The community’s spirit was simply unstoppable."[imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]

Boy meets girl in an internet chatroom in Enea Colombi's nostalgic take on early days of online encounters for Ceri Wax.The video for Solo 2 sees a boy with an unusual appearance log into a site like Chatroullette in the late Noughties, seeing myriad faces before a deeper connection is made with a girl - who then starts to dance to the camera. Colombi highlights a moment of innocence, and the rarely discussed up-side of internet connectivity, while also hinting at the darker stuff.[imgtoken data:1]"This music video was inspired by one of the digital phenomena that marked an entire generation: the world of random online encounters (Chatroulette + Omegle)," he describes. "These platforms began with noble intentions and eventually collapsed under their own contradictions. For a while, though, they offered a space for escape, for discovery - a place where one could adopt a second identity or simply be themselves."This is the story of a boy with a deformed appearance. Maybe he truly looks this way, or maybe it’s just the way he sees himself—a projection of his own deep sense of inadequacy. He longs for connection, for someone who can see beyond the surface.[imgtoken data:2]"We were deeply moved by the words of Omegle’s creator: 'From the moment I discovered the Internet at a young age, it has been a magical place to me. Growing up in a small town, relatively isolated from the larger world, it was a revelation how much more there was to discover – how many interesting people and ideas the world had to offer.'In short, the Internet opened the door to a much larger, more diverse, and more vibrant world than I would have otherwise been able to experience; and enabled me to be an active participant in, and contributor to, that world. All of this helped me to learn, and to grow into a more well-rounded person. Moreover, as a survivor of childhood rape, I was acutely aware that any time I interacted with someone in the physical world, I was risking my physical body. The internet gave me a refuge from that fear...'"The music video was made with an extremely limited budget. We recreated the original 2007 Chatroulette interface (now radically changed) with the help of a small team of developers. Thanks to them, we were able to build a casting process involving volunteer participants who became part of this experimental narrative."

Valentin Guiod's gripping Patience (or Sabali in Arabic) with music by DJ Snake - a remix of legendary Malian artists Amadou & Mariam's famous song Sabali - follows Moudou, a young Senegalese man, on his epic journey from his homeland to what he hopes is a better future.Starting from the point of when its decided he must leave his home for the family to survive, Guoid crafts the story of the migrant's clandestine odyssey across country with tremendous skill. It's a personal tale, as the migrant first leaves his Senegalese village for the big city before his journey continues across the desert, and his reality and dreams collide. It's also a widescreen epic, as Moudou experiences moments of terror and temptation, as well as sheer grinding tedium of his journey, before a spectacular climax. It's a brilliant achievement, with a wonderful performance by Alassane Diong as Moudou, as well as Omar Sy as his brother and Anna Thiandoum as his love. And by putting us so firmly in the world of one determined and above all, decent person, Guoid makes a crucial contribution to the discussion of a dominating global issue. It also features Amadou & Mariam performing Sabali, and the release of the film, made last year, also follows the death in April of Amadou Bagayoko of Amadou & Mariam.• Valentin Guiod's insights into the making of Patience here[imgtoken data:1][imgtoken data:2]

Algerian-French director Lyna Zerrouki delivers an expansive vision of the meaning of exile in her beautifully crafted video for Palestinian singer-songwriter and rapper Saint Levant.Described as 'the artistic response to our pain', the video for Exile takes place in an huge empty space, dominated by an ice blue backdrop. Blue represents the cold sensation that comes with being forced into exile, far away from his warm, colourful home. But this is also a world which provides a creative space where the artist can perform and collaborate with his orchestra - which happens in the latter part of the video.[imgtoken data:1] "Aesthetically, I wanted to create a different world, a surreal world in which art is the solution," says Lyna Zerrouki. "The message is universal, we’re all human beings and we all deserve peace and justice."Saint Levant and the orchestra playing under the rain represents a form of resilience. It shows that no matter what happens to us, we will keep playing, we will keep pushing and create beyond the circumstances we are in. To me this song is in part about conquering one’s pain to turn it into something glorious and beautiful."[imgtoken data:2]Inspired by film icons whose colour language she reinvents (Kieslowski and the symbolic impact of colours in Trois couleurs:Bleu), Lyna offers a palpable contrast between the icy blue of alienation and sweet memories. A visual language that is enhanced by the use of other media such as dance, fashion and film direction to create a world that is both poetic and surreal.

Thibault-Théodore directed a sensual and subversive promo for the iconoclastic French singer Yseult. The video for Bad Boy, which came out late last year, explores eroticism, beauty and surrender in genuinely breathtaking fashion. Rapper Ichon co-stars as Yseult's partner in an affair which involves different aspects of fetish practice in sexual life, the video bares all in both a physical and emotional sense, and is handled with due care by the director. Beautifully shot by DoP David Foulkes, the cinematography feels very much traditional in its technique, but contemporary in its boldness and attitude. And it all leads to a staggering moment of artistic expression and trust by Yseult in the final section of the video. Translating raw emotion into a true piece of art, the creative team have pulled off a wonderful project that elevates the downtempo track.

Zhang & Knight's video for Meryem Aboulouafa establishes a distinctive mood all of its own - part-Arabic, part-surrealist - to create a wonderfully evocative video for the Moroccan singer-songwriter's song Deeply. The staging is a stylish set, based on an architecture of courtyards and quadrangles found in North Africa and across the Mediterranean, rendered in serene pastel shades. But within the quadrangle, crowded with people, there is another square - a hole into which dancers teeter and then fall... Aboulouafa is the elegant centre in this haunting scenario, who eventually looks into the hole and reveals its otherworldly secret. The first video by Hannah Palumbo and Linden Feng - aka Zhang & Knight - since joining Birth for French representation is one of their most exquisite.

Elly Jackson, aka La Roux, makes her way through an imaginary game of video game golf, in Valentin Guiod's video for Automatic Driver. Swapping out the futuristic sets and styling for a slice of video game nostalgia, Jackson plays a golfer in a surreal virtual world full of fluorescent rocks and terrain. As she adventures deeper into this environment, her surroundings melt and glitch into a rainbow of neon colours, creating an effect that is as striking as it is unusual. La Roux's sound has matured greatly since bursting onto the scene with Going In For The Kill back in the Noughties, and there is a certain confidence and self-assuredness this time around. Not one to conform to pop industry conventions, Jackson has always been a unique artist on the fringe of mainstream, and this is a very promising return for the artist.
