A couple seek to sort out their relationship problems in an otherwise empty amusement park in Alexandros Papathanasopoulos' eye-poppingly violent promo for Nuâge. The video for Sixteen Hundred Miles opens with a heart to heart in the front of a car, where the girl explains - through subtitles - that she doesn't want things to end badly.So they play some games, get on some rides, and have an unusually competitive game of air hockey... and then things spiral into absolute mayhem, when their bubbling emotions erupt - and the boyfriend's homicidal tendencies are exposed. A bloody, brilliant and manic visual feast, DoP Petros Nousias creates a vintage slasher aesthetic with the saturated colours and frantic camerawork, which is elevated by Elena Mengreli and Yorgos Zygouris's high-energy performances as the warring couple.

Adam Kirschner - aka Noble Sun - is on the run from a mysterious intruder, in Vancouver-based director Devon Mussett's visceral promo for Sleepin'. Through a series of increasingly bizarre, dream-like vignettes, Kirschner drops in and out of four surreal worlds, before ultimately finding himself back in his bed with a woman he adores. The entertaining narrative structure - including moments of cartoonish ultraviolence and gore - makes this a standout visual with plenty to appreciate, from the wild set pieces to Kirschner's multifaceted performance."We threw together a incredible Canadian cast, a group of some of the best Vancouver filmmakers, some incredible local sponsors and a variety of unique Hollywood North locations to create the wild ride that is the Sleepin' music video," says Mussett."We used a mix of old school camera tricks and contemporary visual effects to create a film that makess you want to double back, to fully understand what just happened."

Gwil Doe portrays both the glamour and the horror of the gangsta life in this fast-moving, no-holds-barred video for Jamaican artist Sean D featuring UK rappers Digger D and Unknown T, shot in Kingston, Jamaica and London.The artists' performances pepper the story of a violent gang feud that ignites to life in London and reaches its grisly conclusion in Kingston. Suffice to say that some naughty boys come to some very sticky ends in this one.

Meji Alabi directs an intense and timely exploration of violence and inequality, in his video for Burna Boy's Monsters You Made, featuring Chris Martin. Having watched a devastating montage of traumatic events, a group of soldiers - led by Burna Boy - are training to revolt against the systems and people in power. The concept encapsulates the themes of the track, and is a timely meditation on an unjust society, where violence is bred from birth and is a matter of life and death for many people.

Elliott Gonzo places Le Junk into an ultraviolent, nightmarish underworld in his video for Level 3. Set in a cruelly surreal version of Fight Club, the cinematic promo kicks off with a thump, and carries that momentum to the grisly final frame. With a suitably grungy location and visceral colour palette, DoP JP Garcia captures a sense of dread and desperation through the cinematography, perfectly encapsulating the minacious concept.

In the fourth of Matt Walker's series of videos for Jme, the independent rap artist reveals the extent of loathing of the music business, in the action-packed and violent video for Pricks.It's set in a corporate record label, where Jme is poised to sign a contract - until he notices a clause which says he is about to sell his own soul, in perpetuity... So he refuses to sign - and then all hell breaks loose.The ensuing tear-up, and his white-knuckle ride in trying to escape from the building, is a perfect accompaniment to Jme's entertaining diatribe.Whether or not you sympathise with all of his sentiments (or the violence), it climaxes in a resounding message - 'Thought my style didn't fit til I stopped listening to all these pricks.' - just as he is about to face his final stand against a group of seriously miffed record company execs. It's a tremendous vehicle for a seriously talented rapper.

A young soldier gives into his bloodthirsty temptations in this hyperviolent video for Russian artist Shortparis.Opening in a vast, clinical space, a group of soldiers are stood in combat formation, overlooked by a handful of stern-faced higher-ups. Initially nervous and isolated from the pack, a young soldier flies into a fit of rage, battering his colleagues and strangling a woman in a hallway. The violence soon ramps up into street fights with bricks and death by hara-kiri. Co-directed by Vlad Fishez and Shortparis himself, this is grisly stuff with its own unhinged momentum, driven by the memorable performance of the lead actor. Highlighting society's role in creating killers, the escalating violence is a sobering depiction of the destructive power we are all capable of wielding.

It's time for Unfair Fight Club in the new video for The Prodigy by Paco Raterta: a young man and woman face ridiculous odds in a two staged battles for an ominous spectator. And that makes for a turbo-charged, relentlessly violent spectacle.It's the second collaboration between Manila-based Raterta and the UK dance legends, following the rip-roaring Need Some1 earlier this year, and this one for Timebomb Zone adds to Raterta's growing reputation as a real talent to watch - one of the best new talents to come into music videos in the last year, and a thrilling action director in any medium.This one, also shot in Manila, also benefits for having a couple of underdogs you can root for - who are nonetheless capable of some eye-wateringly vicious moves. It's not for the squeamish, but The Prodge's ode to mayhem deserves nothing less.
