German singer-songwriter Alice Merton self-directs an absorbing narrative for Ignorance Is Bliss, shot in Iceland.

The video is a gritty road movie, with Merton on a journey of self-discovery and catharsis, displaying  acting range as well as clear talent as a director. She plays a girl who at the start is fierce and rebellious - stealing a car at a petrol station under the nose of its owner, heading off into the wild Icelandic landscape.

Then comes the explanation for her behaviour as a past relationship comes back to her on an empty beach, with editor Sara Faulkner expertly intercutting between her joyful past and lonely present.  

Beautifully shot and executed, it's a powerful visual which highlights how we deal with echoes of the past, and how sometimes the best choice can be burning it all to the ground.
