Self Esteem 'Deep Blue Okay' by Piers Dennis
Promonews - 28th Apr 2025
As latest album A Complicated Woman is released, Self Esteem's latest collaboration with Piers Dennis is a showcase for the singer's unique charisma and sense of drama - a powerful curtain call for the new LP.
Opening on the iconic frame from the album artwork, featuring the artist in Handmaid's Tale-style costume, the video unfolds in a single, hypnotic take. Bathed in spotlight, Rebecca Lucy Taylor (aka Self Esteem) delivers a raw, full-sync performance, part battle cry, part performance art.
As the camera slowly zooms out, the illusion dissolves and the artifice is revealed: lights, scaffolding, action. And then, finally, there's Rebecca's exit. That's as flawlessly devastating as everything that has preceded it.
"Rebecca and I have worked together for over 10 years now and The Deep Blue Okay shoot somehow felt like the pinnacle of our collaborations, like all the conversations we’d ever had led there," says Piers Dennis.
"That sounds cringingly pretentious for a music video, but this feels like a deeply personal piece of work, and making it had the rare feeling of everything clicking into place."
