Miso Extra 'Slow Down' by Claryn Chong

Claryn Chong meditates on fleeting time and constant motion in a visually rich promo for performance promo for rising electronic pop artist Miso Extra.
The video for Slow Down uses experimental patterns and backdrops to reflect the frantic pace of everyday life. The concept's aim is to remind us to slow down, focusing on the rare moments of self-reflection we get in between the chaos. Chong's focus on performance and the understated emotion the artist evokes throughout ties together the promo in an elevated, stirring way.
"The film was purely inspired by the music - parallel to the rhythmic elements of the track, I wanted the visual themes to revolve around ideas of motion, repetition, cycles, and the transience of time," explains Claryn Chong.
"Emily (Miso Extra) delivers an evocative and captivating performance against the backdrop of these striking visuals flashed and quickly changing on a large LED screen, creating moments of surrealism and psychedelia mixed with feelings of nostalgia and existentialism. Throughout, the audience remains seated on the edge of overstimulation, but they never quite get there - because there is no time to slow down and process it.
"I made this film in a hope to give birth to a visual world which evokes emotion that I strongly relate to - the perpetual trying to keep still in environments that don’t slow down for you and time that doesn’t stop for you. Perhaps some of these feelings come from living in a city like London where it’s so fast-paced and constantly moving; some days I feel I struggle to keep up and thus am left behind feeling all alone.
"Having also lived in three different countries and four different cities, I wanted to visually show how time and places are just fleeting and end up being insignificant moments in life. Here I also wanted to add an element of my heritage and background, with the colour palette inspired by the films of Wong Kar Wai, Tsai Ming-Liang, Bi Gan - filmmakers who loved to explore their individual lonely environments all set in Asia."
