Zoe Wees 'Hold Me Like You Used To' by Gemma Yin
Rob Ulitski - 9th June 2021
Gemma Yin directs a heartwrenching performance promo for German singer-songwriter Zoe Wees.
Opening with a dedication to her great grandmother, themes of loss and hurt bleed into every frame of the visual, present in snapshots of memories and reminders of those who are no longer with us, as Yin experiments in the video with light, movement and sculptural forms around Zoe.
Empty seats are tucked under a table, blurred visions of departed family members linger in the background - powerful iconography that is universally relatable and fitting to the concept.
The use of colour is especially inspired, cutting from desaturated setups reflecting an overwhelming feeling of emptiness, to shimmering golds and ambers, representing a sense of power and transcendence.
This will quite possibly be the first time many viewers see and hear Zoe Wees, and Yin has created the most impressive of introductions, celebrating the energy and presence of the up and coming artist.
