The code can also be rewritten to work as a live tool with performance optimisation and sound reactivity.&nbsp;Effortlessly trance-inducing, the coruscating lights and&nbsp;kaleidoscope of colours are an outstanding interpretation of the music. In pushing the boundaries of how we interact with new technology and techniques, Yin has created something universal and timeless.&nbsp;

With her expertise and versatility in mixed media animation,&nbsp;it's not surprising that Gemma Yin has been busier than most people during the lockdown. Indeed,&nbsp;Gemma has directed&nbsp;one of the standout videos of Quarantine Time,&nbsp;for dynamic Bree Runway.When she's not been working, she's been making face-masks... and then enjoying some quality time with her boyfriend&nbsp;Pierre and her puppy Pacho...What were you working on before the lockdown? We had shot the music video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/04/14/new-rules-pasta-gemma-yin/64311" target="_blank">New Rules' Pasta</a>&nbsp;with the band in late February, so I was working on the edit and animation for that when things started to change. I didn’t know at the time that it would be my last shoot for a while!<blockquote>I've always known that I am an introvert and enjoy my down time in my own space.</blockquote>What are you working on now? A lot of music video briefs came in for me just after lockdown once people had a chance to gather themselves and pivot to a different approach for their projects. Mixed media and animated approaches have become the go-to, so I was getting a lot of enquiries.I have just finished work on two lyric videos, and one main video which we managed to shoot in quarantine conditions. We managed to pull off some magic on that one, despite the unprecedented constraints, for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/05/01/bree-runway-ft-yung-baby-tate-damn-daniel-gemma-yin/64629" target="_blank">Bree Runway's Damn Daniel</a>. I also have a couple of fashion projects coming up, but retail has been the hardest hit, so I think it has taken a little longer for brands to adapt.[vidtoken data:0]<blockquote>We managed to pull off some magic...&nbsp;for Bree Runway's Damn Daniel.</blockquote>Outside of my regular work, I am sewing face masks. I used to make knickers for my friends at Christmas time, so already have lots of fun fabric and sewing supplies here. I am also doing some remote mentoring sessions for young creatives who need a little guidance on how to kick-start their careers. It’s going to be tough times ahead economically, so it’s imperative to give the next generation a leg up where possible.&nbsp;What's the most surprising, or least predictable thing, that's happened to you during quarantine? I have become obsessed with the Disney renaissance films again - the blockbusters from my childhood in the 1990s! I’m not sure where this nostalgia craving has come from, but I have watched all of the original <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFL5xbxc0AY" target="_blank">‘making of’ docs</a>. I got very emotional while listening to The Circle Of Life and visualising myself in the audience at The Lion King musical - which I have not yet seen -&nbsp;in a future where we can go to shows again. Random!What's the favourite part of your daily routine? I am fortunate to have a puppy to take out on walks - he is my ticket to freedom! He just turned a year old, so had his birthday in quarantine. We get out for daily walks which is a great time to get some fresh air and take a break from the quarantine grind.<blockquote>I'm doing some remote mentoring... tough times are ahead so it’s imperative to give the next generation a leg up where possible.</blockquote>Are things getting harder/better/staying the same? I can’t complain about anything, as I haven’t experienced any personal difficulties despite the wider crisis. I am lucky to have a nice home, and work still coming in. My partner made it back from a work trip abroad when things started to shut down, so I am not short of company. My loved ones are safe and well. I would say things have been good, and are still good.What have you learned about yourself during quarantine? Whilst I wouldn’t go as far as to call myself socially awkward, I have always known that I am an introvert and enjoy my down time in my own space. This has made me particularly resilient to the challenges that many people are facing in social isolation. Given that the world is on pause, I have found it freeing to not have the pressure to make social commitments and fill up available space in the calendar. The loss of control has been good for me![imgtoken data:1]Best meal you have eaten/are regularly cooking (send photo, if poss!) I’ve been eating well, but I can’t recall anything that has been stand out.. I had a quick scroll through my pics in search of anything and saw this one of my dogs birthday breakfast of kings (scrambled egg, sausage, bacon, crackers and kibble - also a small cup of tea!!). I can honestly speak for him when I say that this has been a culinary highlight of his short life!! It is definitely an upgrade from dry kibble.Best thing you’ve watched, or heard, while on lockdown, and why? And the worst...? My boyfriend got me into watching Brooklyn Nine Nine,&nbsp;the goofball NYPD cop comedy. It’s not something I would have chosen to watch but I am completely hooked and in love with the characters. The moral code of the characters is strongly rooted in friendship and loyalty which feels especially poignant right now, and I also believe that comedy is a great antidote to the current state of chaos.[vidtoken data:1]The worst thing I’ve watched is that film that came up on the Netflix homepage the other day - ‘Extraction’ with Chris Hemsworth. What a stinker!!How's your Work/Life balance at the moment? It’s not balanced! I am working too much. How to&nbsp;make a video that transcends the limitations of lockdown? Bree Runway and Gemma Yin shows exactly how its done with this brazenly enjoyable video for Damn Daniel.It's a&nbsp;collaboration in every sense of the word, with Yin bringing her animation and VFX skills to a shoot that had to be self-shot by the London-based artist, and her US-based guest artist Yung Baby Tate. But as everyone has done their jobs so well, it is really hard to tell that it was made under these conditions at all. This is brilliant, very much on its own merits, and fits perfectly into the&nbsp;increasingly impressive canon of Bree Runway videos.As you would expect, Bree Runway gives a sizzling performance, characteristically feisty and sexy. She's hypnotic - a force of nature. And as producer Sandra&nbsp;Spethmann points out, Bree brought that energy to the whole production. "We were blessed to be working with Bree who is not only an incredible artist and performer but also a hugely positive force in terms of making things happen," she says. "She can be credited as HMU, Stylist, Choreographer and Artist on this video."Bree was sent the best equipment possible to shoot with in a domestic situation. But it was also the experience she has had of making her own videos a few years ago which stood her in good stead here. Then Yung Baby Tate sent over her own, lesser quality footage, from her own home.Then it was Gemma Yin's time to do what she has been doing so well for a while, and come into her own. And she frames everything&nbsp;into an '80s-inspired neon dream that fits like a glove around Bree's wardrobe, integrating Yung into screens, and sunglasses, that merges seamlessly into her sexy 'classic MTV' world. Gemma Yin's command of graphics, animation and mixed media has been a much-valued talent for a while now, and in her new project&nbsp;for New Rules she fuses those graphic skills with performance footage of the Irish boyband.&nbsp;The result is an&nbsp;excellent, and surprisingly moving video for their song Pasta.As the lyrical content touches&nbsp;upon the issues of mental health and self-image, within the confines of a love song, the video uses plenty of split-screen to cover the gamut of performance, narrative and a telling use of social media graphics.The strength of the piece is the constant fluidity of those split screen images. It's not dissimilar to the style of a classic movie or TV title sequences of a certain period, but it works beautifully&nbsp;here.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A collaboration between director&nbsp;Gemma Yin Taylor, and creative technologist&nbsp;Pierre Tardif to create a lyric video for Sigrid&#39;s Sucker Punch in augmented reality. GEMMA YIN TAYLOR:&quot;We have collaborated before, but only on music for my animations, as Pierre&rsquo;s hobby outside of coding is sound design. We had been looking for ways to bring our ideas to life, waiting for the right project to come up. When Sigrid&rsquo;s team approached me about making a new lyric video for Sucker Punch it was the perfect opportunity to try something with augmented reality. The team are really open to new ideas so let us run with it. It would be the fourth lyric video that I have created for Sigrid so I have a thorough understanding of her style and aesthetic which I knew would lend itself to this bold/experimental approach.&quot;I worked on the video concept, design and direction alongside Pierre who set to work on developing an app which would place the lyrics within augmented reality - live within 3D space as you look through the camera of the device. Using Openframeworks -creative coding framework - for iOS and ARKit to create the apps, Pierre created a range of effects to apply to the text. Some effects were achieved using real-time feed of the camera, such as texture mapping on the sides of a polygon, or rotation speed averaging. We filmed some of the lyrics with Sigrid, who was really open and responsive to this relatively foreign way of working. The rest of the footage was filmed in various locations in Europe.&quot;This way of working turned the process on its head for me - instead of animating all of the lyrics manually, the text was captured live in space in response to the movement of the camera. You have to be creative in a different way - by using the world around you and the device to the best use in that moment. We were free to shoot virtually anywhere with a very inconspicuous kit and zero implications, as no-one questions people filming or photographing innocuous scenes on their phones. There is a wildness in the way we filmed it which complements the energy of the track - a dynamism that I would normally have to create using software. Once we had captured the footage of the lyrics with various different effects, I just had to edit all of the recordings afterwards to be timed with the track. The film has a &lsquo;smartphone&rsquo; aesthetic which mirrors the masses of social content that populates our streams every day, but the augmented reality text and graphics gives it a really fresh and distinctive twist.&quot; &nbsp;

Animator and director&nbsp;Gemma Yin Taylor has created some awesome,&nbsp;raw visuals in this high-powered video for Vant&#39;s Karma Seeker.&nbsp;Combining pattern, text and photography, the video&#39;s visual style&nbsp;was influenced by the cut-and-paste aesthetic of homemade music fanzines of the 80&#39;s and 90&#39;s.&nbsp;The video was created using&nbsp;rostrum camera&nbsp;stop-motion and doesn&#39;t rely on&nbsp;digital post-production effects,&nbsp;with each of its&nbsp;2,700&nbsp;frames&nbsp;created by hand using collage and illustration techniques.Designed to have a schizophrenic feel, the performance builds up&nbsp;from a more spacious monochrome look to an ultra-layered,&nbsp;frenzied&nbsp;madness in it&#39;s&nbsp;darker&nbsp;scenes.&nbsp;
