Hak Baker 'Venezuela Riddim' by Broken Antenna
David Knight - 8th Jan 2020
For their latest video for Hak Baker, Broken Antenna try something different: a mini-drama of a London wedding in the early 2000s, that brings white and black families together, shot entirely on Hi8.
Hak and his band provide the entertainment as the wedding party in a local church hall gets into full swing - performing his latest ode, Venezuela Riddim. There's drinking, dancing and other stuff. Tempers fray, connections are made... and fans of Hak Baker's previous videos will not be surprised to learn that the charismatic troubadour is soon in the thick of it.
This is a subtle change-up into drama for Broken Antenna - that's Myles McAuliffe and Gustav Newby - which they handle with aplomb. Everything feels right about it - the sizeable cast is pitch perfect, the use of the home video camera helps to deliver that sense of authenticity. And although the wedding is not genuine, the party probably is.
An excellent addition to the Hak Baker canon by Broken Antenna, which includes the UKMVA-nominated Like It Or Lump It and Wonderland.
BROKEN ANTENNA:
"As with everything we make with Hak, it’s always honest. But this time, we took it out of the Isle of Dogs and away from his close friends.
"We wanted to make a wedding video. But we didn’t have enough money for an actual wedding. So we had to think about how to we could make it happen.
"Venezuela Riddim is the coming together of a white and black family set in the early 2000s from the perspective of the wedding videographer with a Hi8. Hak and his band come to play the part of the band who crash the wedding and end up bringing everyone together.
"Tongue-in-cheek at times but with no bravado - the cast (and crew) let themselves go in a perfectly naturalistic way and it worked better than we imagined."
