Agar Agar 'Fangs Out' by William Laboury
David Knight - 28th Feb 2018
William Laboury, winner of a Best Video Newcomer Award with his Bonnie Banane video at last year's UKMVAs, returns with this absorbing and ingenious video for Agar Agar, addressing the perils of VR in one of the most entertaining ways yet.
A girl – played by Garance Marillier, acclaimed young actress from French movie Raw – dons the VR glasses which takes her into a digital forest, where she becomes the magnificent dog that she pines for in her bedroom. Then the real world and its VR equivalent run in tandem, as her canine avatar runs through verdant digi-forest while she blunders blindly through her Paris neighbourhood.
It's a cool idea, and Laboury seamlessly ratchets the action up from the humourous to something more thrilling, without losing the dreaminess that matches the song. Finally, as far more feral beasts appear in the VR universe, the barriers between these two parallel worlds begins to break down...
