Odesza 'Say My Name' by Ian Pons Jewell
Jimmy Brown - 9th Sept 2014
For Seattle-based electronic duo Odesza's tune Say My Name, Ian Pons Jewell documents a couple seriously in love, delivering a picture-postcard promo – with what looks at first like some serious product placment.
Then Ian employs an utterly brilliant, and rather disturbing, narrative flip...
IAN PONS JEWELL:
"The video has its roots in my first trip to LA, visiting one of my best friends. I had no real idea what to expect, but was met with two worlds: one joyous, full of sun, and then its underbelly, a very dark weird place.
"Jihanne opened the city up to me completely. So the video is an attempt to capture the two sides of the coin, and shows a person hitting the wall of illusion.
"I once heard the phrase 'actors are vacuous vessels waiting to be filled' – something I don't agree with. But what if one of these actors were 'filled', but never emptied? What if, through the acting process, they lost their real identity and became the character, falling for the supporting lead? What would happen when the director calls 'cut'?..."
