Warren Fu channels epic Romantic art in his stunning, mesmeric&nbsp;video for Phoenix.The video for the iconic French rock band's Winter Solstice opens with vocalist Thomas Mars balancing on the edge of a cliff, performing under stormy skies - in the manner of a Caspar David Friedrich painting.Fu takes us through a series of related compositions from landscape&nbsp;to extreme close-up to accentuate the deeply reflective mood of the song and Mars's performance. Feeling more like an art installation or visual poem than a music video, Warren Fu&nbsp;directs an animated epic for The Strokes’ Ode to the Mets.For the six and a half minute journey, we are continuously pulled back through eight different chapters. From the prehistoric era, to an abandoned school gym, to an underwater New York City, the viewer seamlessly drifts through these worlds like a ghostly spectator.[imgtoken data:1]To match the haunting atmosphere in the track, Fu conceived an animated video completely devoid of any living thing. The visuals traverse many celebratory moments, yet there is a sense of bittersweet nostalgia that comes with those scenes being empty, like a ghost town where the people have suddenly vanished. Perpetually in motion, the video feels like the purported ‘life review’ phenomenon one experiences before death, where your most poignant memories rush before you in a flood of memory and regret. This hazy sense of anachronism and not being able to place the time or setting adds to this otherworldly vibe, underscored by a strangely haunting emotional connection.Fu’s initial concept for the video was for it to be shot live-action with a combination of locations and miniature sets. However, Fu says, “when Covid stay-at-home measures were put in place in April, we had to go the animation route. This actually ended up being a blessing, because it allowed us to get more surreal and otherworldly with the visuals.”[imgtoken data:2]Although Fu never met any of the animators, or even his producer Joel Kretschman in person, he says that having a shared goal to work towards during quarantine was therapeutic in some ways.Sara Nix, Executive Producer of Music Videos at Partizan, remarks, “It was amazing to see how efficiently Warren was able to streamline the process between so many people. He and Joel didn’t miss a beat adapting to this new manner of working. All meetings, notes and creative brainstorms were done over Zoom, with Fu staying in constant communication about style and transitions as the concepts were developing.”Arresting in its style and content, the video contains subtle hints to the title of the track. As lead singer Casablancas has stated, he came up with the melody while waiting on the train platform after baseball team New York Mets lost the 2016 Wild Card Game to the San Francisco Giants. Fu debated how Mets-inspired to make the video, as the lyrics are less about baseball and more universal in theme.[imgtoken data:3]By adding subtle hints throughout the video, including the team’s colors of orange and blue and a banner that reads Class of ‘69 (the year The Mets won the World Series over the Baltimore Orioles), the Easter eggs are a nod to the overarching themes of hope, promise and possibilities. Yet when you see them in the context of the past without people present, it takes on a nostalgic, bittersweet feeling.Fu explains, “The band and I are in line as far as our taste and references go. After seeing the early conceptual animatic for the video, [guitarist] Albert Hammond Jr. texted me, ‘That Ode To The Mets thing is so f*cking cool! Wow.’ They let me essentially run with the video from that point on.”Beautifully engaging and wondrous, Fu knocks the concept out the park - pun intended - and captures the bittersweet sense of saudade that the music and lyrics inspire.[imgtoken data:4]

Warren Fu has been one of the most&nbsp;profilic and successful directors working in music videos for more than a decade. He has been the go-to visual&nbsp;collaborator with a range of artists - Daft Punk, Mark Ronson, The Killers (and Brandon Flowers as a solo artist), The Strokes (and Julian Casablancas as a solo artist), Haim, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams - and most recently, The 1975 (here he is, above left, with the band's frontman Matty Healy on the set of the Sincerity Is Scary video last year).Warren was born Chicago, raised in California, studied economics at UC Berkeley, and he got his break in film working at Lucasfilm. He&nbsp;now lives in Los Angeles - and it turns out that this very busy director enjoys cooking, and a good pun-related purchase...&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;WORK:How long have you held your current position? What were you doing before this? I’ve been directing for 10 years now, and before this I had another life as an art director for feature films.What was your first job, or first significant break in the industry? The first step was getting my foot in the door at Lucasfilm through their internship program, which ended up being like film school for me.&nbsp;There I learned about storytelling, art direction, design, model building, shooting miniature sets, the importance of good hygiene… so many things that have come in handy in the filmmaker’s toolkit.&nbsp;Name one music video that inspired you to get involved in making music videos? <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directors_Label" target="_blank">The Director’s Label DVD set</a> was a game changer for so many of us. Especially Pharcyde’s Drop&nbsp;by Spike [Jonze], Portishead’s Only You&nbsp;by [Chris] Cunningham, and The White Stripe’s Hardest Button To Button&nbsp;by [Michel] Gondry.[vidtoken data:0]Name one project you’ve done that was significant as a learning experience – and why? <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2016/07/01/strokes-threat-joy-warren-fu/42187" target="_blank">The Strokes'&nbsp;Threat of Joy</a>. We were suppose to do a video for a song called OBLIVIUS,&nbsp;and for a number of reasons the track changed two days before the shoot. It was too late to cancel the stage, talent, wardrobe and crew, so I basically had to write a new concept with the elements we already had in place.<blockquote>You just have to learn to roll with the unexpected in filmmaking, even if it means winging some of it on the day</blockquote>I’m the type of person that prefers to plan ahead, but I learned that you just have to learn to roll with the unexpected in filmmaking, even if it means winging some of it on the day. So I made the new video a sort of classic caper about the footage from the original video being stolen and the search that ensued.[vidtoken data:1]&nbsp;What are the favourite projects (music videos or otherwise) you’ve worked on in the past year or so? I'm pleased with how aggressive The 1975’s&nbsp;People&nbsp;video turned out. It was a complete departure from the videos we had done together in the past.&nbsp; We went from a happy people place with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2018/11/23/1975-sincerity-scary-warren-fu/56222" target="_blank">Sincerity is Scary</a>, to a scary place with&nbsp;People.&nbsp;[vidtoken data:2]<blockquote>We went from a 'happy people' place with&nbsp;Sincerity Is Scary, to a scary place with&nbsp;People.</blockquote>Gesaffelstein’s Blast Off was a nice reunion project because I got to reunite with the Daft Arts creative team, who helped come up with the initial concepts and ideas for the video in the early stages. And, it’s always a pleasure to collaborate with Pharrell and his crew. It can be a bit of a challenge to satisfy everyone when there are multiple voices involved, but I think in the end we were able to arrive at something that balanced that feeling of darkness and enlightenment that I got from the track.[vidtoken data:3] I’m also happy with how slick Good Thing&nbsp;turned out. It was my second time collaborating with Zedd.&nbsp;(The first time was with Katy Perry and this time it was with Kehlani) I’ve always wanted to do a video with lots of choreography and we got to collaborate with Sean Bankhead on this one. I loved what he did with Normani and after seeing Motivation I knew we had to get him on board for our video.&nbsp;I think that’s one of my favourite things about music videos. The fact that you can see the work of other artists you admire, be it dancers, choreographers, art directors, graphic designers, stylists, you name it… and then two weeks later you find yourself on set working with them, if you can get your schedules to align.[vidtoken data:4] &nbsp;<blockquote>In music videos you can see the work of&nbsp;artists you admire... and&nbsp;two weeks later you find yourself on set working with them</blockquote>What are you currently working on? I’ve just wrapped up a music-related cinematic story with multiple chapters. It will be coming out in the first quarter of 2020. Then I’ll be in the UK for the first part of the year to shoot a few commercial promos.What kind of work would you like to be doing in the future? I’ll always love music and setting visuals to them. I would also love to keep pushing into more narrative work, hopefully in TV and film. When I retire from all of that I want to make wood furniture. Or music. Or both.&nbsp;What advice would you give someone entering your field? Keep your mind open&nbsp;because you can never stop learning.&nbsp;LIFE:Tell us something that we don’t know about you… My favourite show ever is&nbsp;The Office (UK); my strength is directing, my weakness is eczema.When you’re not working, what do you like to spend time doing? Cooking. As someone who grew up painting, I’m finding a lot of similarities in the way you envision the final outcome and make tiny adjustments along the way.<blockquote>Advice? Keep your mind open because you can never stop learning.</blockquote>Where did you go on your last holiday (or vacation)? And where would you love to visit? Kyoto, Japan.&nbsp; I would love to go Iceland or Peru next year.​Your favourite music videos (by other people) in the past year? It was a bit over a year ago, but I liked Rian Johnson’s LCD Soundsystem video for Oh Baby.[vidtoken data:5]What are your favourite currently-running TV shows? I love <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2nSqBNk538" target="_blank">Barry</a>, although I’m way behind on it. The dark humour is right up my alley.I also love the simplicity and pacing of The Mandalorian so far. It’s nice to see a lot of people I used to work with involved on that show, like Doug Chiang and Christian Alzmann.&nbsp;[vidtoken data:6]What’s the best movie (or movies) you’ve seen recently? The Irishman&nbsp;was superbly made, especially the last act. I was captivated for all three hours+ of that film.And&nbsp;Parasite. Instead of best I would say it was the most impactful movie I’ve seen recently. I loved the Lux Prima album that Karen O and Danger Mouse put out this year. The shared listening experience they created with the rock was really ambitious, and turned out to be really special. I respect the fact that they set out to make something different.Best book you’ve read, and/or best exhibition you’ve seen recently? I got to experience <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesh_and_Sand" target="_blank">Alejandro Iñarritu Carne y Arena</a> at the LACMA and I found it to be really moving. I’m not really into VR but that was a great use of it to facilitate empathy and understanding of the struggles of migrants.&nbsp;Favourite food and/or favourite restaurant(s)? I’m kind of over ramen and back on my pho game. My vote for best broth in LA is Pho 87 in Chinatown.<blockquote>Work/life balance? Anyone who works in music videos knows how it can be… but I’m trying!&nbsp;</blockquote>What’s your favourite political or charitable cause, and why? For the past few years, when I’m able to, I’ve been involved with <a href="http://sidekicksohio.org/" target="_blank">The Superhero Project</a>. It’s a program in which artists create superhero characters for youth with serious illnesses or disabilities.I got involved with it after I did <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qok9Ialei4c&amp;feature=emb_title" target="_blank">an animated video for The Killers' Miss Atomic Bomb</a>, and the animation producer connected me with the founder of the program, Lisa Kollins. It’s been pretty heartwarming to get the reactions from the kids and their families after they receive their piece of art.[imgtoken data:1]Best recent purchase? The DōJOE pizza oven (above), because I like Neopolitan pizza and I like bad puns. You see, pizza is made from dough, a dojo is like a place to do martial arts or something like that, and my ceramic egg grill is called a Kamado Joe, so this attachment it is called a “DōJOE”. A pun is a play on words, or wordplay, if you will (...and you will). It’s one of the best “egg”cessories you can get.&nbsp;Work &amp; Life - balance/ imbalance out of five (1 for imbalance; 5 for balance)? Warren Fu&#39;s second video for The 1975 sees&nbsp;Matty Healy living out his worst live performance nightmares, which makes for a smartly entertaining visual for It&#39;s Not Living (If It&#39;s Not With You).First of all, Matty&#39;s clean-cut and wearing a suit. That can&#39;t be right for a start. And then when he&#39;s on stage, with his breezily jogging bandmates, a succession of&nbsp;surreal things start happening.&nbsp;The really clever bit is when the hugely distracted Matty leaves the stage, goes through a door and ends up on the set of his last Fu-directed video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2018/11/23/1975-sincerity-scary-warren-fu/56222" target="_blank">Sincerity Is Scary</a>. A clever meta-textual touch.&nbsp;And with the original idea coming from Healy himself - even if its possibly inspired by Alice In Wonderland -&nbsp;is there a more&nbsp;creative&nbsp;pop star in the UK right now?&nbsp;

The 1975 'It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)' by Warren Fu 

The 1975's Matty Healy turns up the megawattage of his artfully ramshackle star quality in this major musical production number directed by Warren Fu for Sincerity Is Scary.It's the first of two music videos directed by Fu for the band's forthcoming album, and its a beautifully-constructed piece made on the lines of a Hollywood musical, from the backlot staging on a typical city street, to the supporting cast of chorus girls, dancers and marching bands. And it's certainly performed with sincerity - well, up to a point.Created in a number of long takes with mostly whip-pan to create an endless flow, Healy holds it all together with sleepy panache, and there's a nod to his obsession with Chaplinesque heroes - a little girl becomes the avatar of his silent movie character in old '75 vids. Very entertaining, not at all scary.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;“It’s been a real treat having brainstorming sessions with Matty Healy on ideas the past few months," says Warren Fu. "When it comes to music videos, it never ceases to amaze me when sketches on a whim materialise in person a few days later on set. There’s no better feeling.”

The final A Tribe Called Quest video, directed by Warren Fu, is a fitting send-off.Fu&#39;s&nbsp;eight-minute sci-fi-inspired music video for The Space Program&nbsp;(from ATCQ&#39;s latest, final&nbsp;album, We Got It From Here&hellip; Thank You 4 Your Service) is a star-filled, effects-laden epic, ambitiously weaving between the sci-fi visual narrative, and current social issues with politically-charged lyrics about race and the African American experience.Historical footage and images of civil rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali, are amplified with the addition of cameos from Common to Erykah Badhu, Rosario Dawson to Alicia Keyes, and many more.Warren Fu had help from Emmy-winning post studio Therapy Studios to create his vision, with Therapy&#39;s Lenny Mesina co-editing the video to enhance the visceral experienceAdditional work in sound design by Eddie Kim, and in visual effects by Flame artist Geoff Stephenson, also helped bring this futuristic odyssey to life, and bring the curtain down on one of the greatest&nbsp;hiphop outfits. &nbsp;

Phoenix are back and doing the European chat show circuit in Warren Fu and Omer Ganai&#39;s shining, analogue performance clip.The fictional show&nbsp;Ti Amo Speciale,&nbsp; named for the new Phoenix album Ti Amo, sees them perform in a mirror pyramid, complete with incredible lighting and visuals. The analogue formats used to shoot make for a blinding, hazy throwback visual style and the way the video abruptly cuts out just as the band sit down for a post-performance chat is a nice touch, too - as if digging through old tape archives years in the future you find this snippet of a show you don&#39;t really remember. And before you get chance to fully remember it, it&#39;s gone again forever.

Had a nice day at the office dear.. The Darkness mark their unexpected return with this Warren Fu-directed romp for their single Everybody Have A Good Time.
It's a difficult number-crunching board meeting at recession-hit 'Rock Hard Financial', when a stripping bear turns up to liven up proceedings - and then reveals herself to be a sort of subprime mortgage producing maths genius. And that's only the start of Darkness-levels of over-the-topness that culminates in Justin from The Darkness and the lady bear joining in the act of love. 
Not surprisingly The Darkness and Warren Fu developed the bonkers storyline for the Everybody Have A Good Time together. And I think that might be Bob Diamond with the machine gun...
