Will Hooper and Max McLachlan take Bally Gill on a surreal journey into the desert for Raining In LA, the first collaboration between the directors and London soul combo Franc Moody for the upcoming new album.It starts with a lo-fi&nbsp;info-mercial, featuring the band, about the joys of a new tavel agent, FM Travel. Then the gullible working guy played by Gill signs up and takes a suspicious coach journey into the desert to escape his mundane existence. But he finds himself in a very strange, upside world, and facing a very odd fate...Hooper and McLachlan are working&nbsp;for the first time as a directing duo on the project, having created visualisers for each of the five tracks on Into The Ether, the new Franc Moody album. Over several months they produced a slew of info-mercials, teasers and easter eggs which paved the way for the full-length music video for Raining In LA.&nbsp;

Toronto-based director Lucas Hrubizna creates a groundbreaking and bewildering&nbsp;vision of a near-death experience for Sad Night Dynamite, courtesy of cutting-edge 'VolCap' technology, to introduce new release Volume II.Hrubizna has directed an interlinked series of five video shorts that takes the pop-electronic duo's fascination with surreal and psychedelic narrative into amazing new territory. It was made possible by access to the Volumetric Capture facilities at Dimension Studios in London - where SND were filmed performed, and effectively transformed into 3D models.Together with 2D plates of the band performance against greenscreen,&nbsp;Hrubizna could use this material to place them with his created CGI worlds without leaving his home studio. It has taken months of work, but the end-result is mind-boggling, as the approach is to make these worlds as harsh, forbidding, uncomfortable&nbsp;and unpredictable as possible - in accordance with the artists' brief.[imgtoken data:1]<blockquote>Each piece is meant to be a mini-fever dream.</blockquote>“SND had imagined a series of pieces taking place within some sort of purgatory - an abstract in-between place where time has dissolved," explains the director. Abbie Stephens sends up the process of making a music video, in her charming video for Katy J Pearson.On one level, Katy is making a Lumiere-inspired music video for Talk Over Town, performing in a number of imaginative studio set-ups, complete with wacky styling and colourful art direction. But then we also see behind the curtain of the making of this&nbsp;film,&nbsp;as she good-naturedly deals with the crew and the demands of the director - played by&nbsp;Charlie Hansen.[imgtoken data:1]Unlike Katy and her fictional director, the collaboration with Abbie Stephens has been rather more successful. Stephens has created&nbsp;a visual feast - somewhat playful and tongue-in-cheek - and blended that with&nbsp;whimsical humour. And then it&nbsp;develops further with a twist of pure surrealism.Having flourished in the commercial world in recent years, its a very welcome return to music videos for Abbie Stephens, and she has presented out a new aspect&nbsp;to Pearson's on-screen personality that will appeal to her devoted legion of fans.

Barnstorming indie band Wet Leg are reimagined as bath-loving aliens beamed down from outer space, in Fred Rowson's loveably&nbsp;eccentric promo for Too Late Now.&nbsp;Wrapped in bath towels, the band venture out into Croydon to experience the Earthly delight of a good hot soak for the very first time, reflecting the lyrics, “I just need a bubble bath to set me on a higher path”.During their pursuit they encounter the addictions of bubble bath and the relaxing qualities of cucumbers - which involves a certain amount of suggestiveness, in the already characteristic Wet Leg style&nbsp;-&nbsp;eventually finding true nirvana in the form of a very pink hot tub, drawing a conclusion to the space-invaders’ pilgrimage.Filmed across two days in South-East London and on a rather muddy Kentish farm, DoP Rik Burnell worked closely with Rowson to achieve the ‘fly on the wall’ aesthetic, shot on a very very long lens with minimal lighting.[imgtoken data:1]<blockquote>I was slightly stunned to shoot the first Wet Leg video that they didn’t direct themselves.</blockquote>"Wet Leg may be the coolest band of the year, but, surprisingly, they are also 2021’s year’s most innocent gang of outsiders," comments Rowson. "Tasked with documenting their first experience of exploring an urban centre outside of Ryde [on the Isle of Wight] I was shocked by their naivety, and nearly lost them on numerous occasions, not least when Rhian nearly went under a bus. Twice."Thankfully, no indie kids were harmed in the making of this movie, and the quintet instinctively found their way to the safety of a rural setting. Thank God. "Seriously though. I was slightly stunned when Hester and Rhian asked me to shoot the first Wet Leg video that they didn’t direct themselves. Pressure, considering that their previous two were, for me, the best of the year. But, from conception to shoot to edit, this was a mad, magical collaboration that’s up there with my favourite music video experiences."Thank you to Domino and John Moule for trusting us to get on with it, and thank you as always to the team of Terminators at Blink - Rosie, Seb, Laura: you gave up your lives and made this happen in less than a week. For a while...The video was shot back in early July at the height of Covid, when Leigh-Anne and Perrie were in the later stage of their pregnancies. So the girls certainly needed a bit of help around the house.In his first video for Little Mix, Rowson brings a bit of a twisted edge to proceedings - especially when things start to go horribly wrong. Alex Lawther - acclaimed actor from&nbsp;End of the F*cking World,&nbsp;Black Mirror,&nbsp;and much more -&nbsp;has made his&nbsp;directorial debut for childhood friend and artist Linus Fenton.Sponsored by mental health charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) and beautifully shot on 16mm by DoP Adam Singodia, the film examines a difficult friendship between two young boys. They&nbsp;are close as brothers but find it impossible to make one another aware of their feelings.For the film, Lawther worked closely with movement director Grace Nicol to build an avant-garde visual language, which expresses the two boys' attempts to connect with one another, drawing on his experience as an actor to inform his directorial approach.“Linus called me up towards the end of the first Lockdown," Lawther recalls.&nbsp;"He’d written an album, [and] it was the first time I had heard him writing in this way. It was beautiful.&nbsp;I was very moved.&nbsp;&nbsp;"He then asked me if I’d like to direct a video for one of the songs. I&nbsp;was not only lucky to get to work on my first directing gig with a dear friend, but also a brilliant creative team and two wonderful actors - Roman Griffin Davis&nbsp;and Connor Mason."[imgtoken data:1]The video was produced by Blink, with whom Lawther worked when starring as Declan McManus's 'double' in the <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/04/16/declan-mckenna-key-life-earth-will-hooper/64352" target="_blank">Key To Life On Earth&nbsp;video directed by Will Hooper</a> last year.&nbsp;“Collaborating with Alex on his first music video has been such a wonderful experience," says Laura Northover, head of music at Blink.&nbsp;"His experience as an actor really informed his approach when working with the boys on set and during the rehearsals in the lead up to shooting."He’s not only the loveliest person, but also ridiculously talented. I’m looking forward to working together more in the future as he develops as a director.”
