Rollo Jackson directs a mesmerising performance visual for newcomer Pa Salieu's Betty.&nbsp;Opening in an exterior location under a strangely-hued pink sky, the video&nbsp;is formed of dynamic performance setups, spectacular VFX work -including the artist atop several 3D body parts- and&nbsp;a lo-fi performance captured on an infrared camera.The lyrical content and visual concept are very much open to interpretation and deeper insight. Salieu wrote the track to explore both the vibrance and difficulty of black life, against the backdrop of perpetual violence and grief in his lived experiences, and these themes punctuate the video throughout.

Leonn Ward directs this anthemic pastoral, a hymn to self-acceptance and the healing power of the countryside. It’s a rapturous new beginning for Michael Kiwanuka.In You Ain’t the Problem, Kiwanuka recounts a hard-won lesson: it’s not you, it’s them. And in his first solo clip since 2017’s totemic <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/03/24/michael-kiwanuka-cold-little-heart-david-m-helman/46983">Cold Little Heart</a>, Kiwanuka celebrates that lesson. He communes with a group of revellers in the fields and halls of English farmland.Irish director Leonn Ward makes a compelling case for herself as music videos’ premier Romantic. She has a painter’s eye for colour and beauty, and the ability to draw intensely felt performances out of her collaborators: I challenge you not to be moved by Joy Crooke’s tearful lament in <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/04/01/joy-crookes-i-left-you-demo-leonn-ward/58034">Since I Left You</a>.&nbsp;Her style is a lush minimalism. She and Deepa Keshvala, DoP and regular collaborator, render these pastoral settings with a theatrical simplicity that foregrounds the joy of her characters. These landscapes are depicted as a gorgeous playground. You’ll see just wheat and sky, a curtain or a wall, and an effervescent gang of people.Ward also shows off her credentials as a fashion photographer.&nbsp;The styling by Ola Ebiti, a kind of contempory, light-touch&nbsp;Pre-Raphaelitism, is essential to this balance: her&nbsp;subjects are dressed in vibrant primaries, and as they move, they pass through the frame like running washes of colour. For this, we can also thank Jack Mcginity, the award-winning colourist behind ASOS's toybox-toned <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCi7y4U4eO8">Go Play</a> campaign.

Duncan Loudon directs an unnerving, bare-bones cut for his latest collaboration with Flohio.This is Loudon’s fourth video for Flohio. Together, they’ve developed a very specific brand of tense minimalism, based on distortion and subverting editing expectations. Bandage was dizzying. Wild Yout featured some creepy-crawly camera glitches. <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2018/11/01/flohio-10-more-rounds-duncan-loudon/56627" target="_blank">10 More Rounds</a> was a great example, which felt like a thriller masquerading as a freestyle. The video oozed suspense and menace, with barely a reference to anything out of the ordinary.The South London MC takes centre stage once again in this video, but this time she slides in and out of radial distortion. This gives her&nbsp;a strange, gaunt appearance. In&nbsp;this distorted form, her movements seem uncannily inhuman. This, the multiplication of her form, deep red and crow-like distortions conjure the spectre of witchcraft.When, at the end of the track, she gets up and approaches the camera, this reviewer jumped in his seat.&nbsp;

After the Hindu-inspired Don&rsquo;t Let Me Down, Leonn Ward once again teams up with rising UK singer Joy Crookes.And in the video for&nbsp;Since I Left You, Ward uses another vibrant colour palette as a counterpoint to the darkness at the heart of this sparse ballad - we&#39;re hearing the demo version here.&nbsp;It shows&nbsp;Joy Crookes at her most vulnerable, in a captivating performance that demonstrates why she&#39;s so hotly tipped. There is definitely a hint of&nbsp;Winehouse in her wonderful voice.

And as a result, top commercials director Kim Gehrig has been lured back to music, for this brilliant,&nbsp;gif or loop-inspired video.Like the great dance videos of the late &lsquo;90s and early 2000s, Gehrig&rsquo;s video is a simple but deceptively clever idea that&rsquo;s been expertly executed with the help of the Parisian choreography duo I Could Never Be A Dancer and superstar stylist Vanessa Coyle.In a contemporary twist, however, it depicts a succession of characters whose dance moves are looped - reflecting the rhythm track but with a visual glitch-in-the-matrix. Tune-Yards are renowned for their zany and colourful videos that often feel they could sit comfortably within an episode of Sesame Street. In Brit director Dear Mr Quistgard&#39;s video for ABC 123, overall-clad Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner&nbsp;have swapped the playpen for the woodwork shop. But apart from that, this is wacky-business-as-usual.It starts with Garbus&#39;s head popping from a tabletop within a miniature electric train track - which becomes one of the running themes in a video. Visual trickery enlivens the unglamourous workspace at every turn, with Garbus omnipresent, often multiplied, and sometimes&nbsp;cut in half, while Brenner does the more mundane stuff.It could be described as &#39;disorientating and chaotic&#39; (Paste Magazine), and if so that reflects the bleak lyrics as well as the typically bouncy tune, which includes the line &quot;California&#39;s burning down/living in the middle of the sixth extinction&quot;. Fun times.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The story of a relationship played out entirely on London public transport, Sophie Muller&#39;s video for Wolf Alice follows a familiar path from the initial meeting and mutual attraction onwards. But this ends up somewhere less expected.Don&#39;t Delete The Kisses is a real treat. This becomes less about the dramatic arc, and more about the characters - there are outstanding performances here from the lead actors Chelsea&nbsp;Edge and Jack Anderson &ndash; which leaves much more for the viewer to think about. It&#39;s brought together in a marvellous edit by Muller with Owen Oppenheimer. And overall it&#39;s so absorbing, you will probably not be thinking how they figured out how to shoot this.&nbsp;What&#39;s more, it also happens to be Sophie Muller&#39;s first ever video that does not feature the artist. That makes it a landmark as big as any in London. &nbsp;

Technology and natural grace vie for attention in Dan Emmerson&#39;s absorbing video for DJ Shadow.Corridors is a cinematic soundscape that goes techno, and Emmerson&#39;s visuals reflect the unpredictable nature of the track, cutting between swimsuited girls in a pool and miniature, remote-controlled supercar.The scenes are drawn together by the nighttime settings and low-lighting - the spotlit pool, the car illuminated by lazers &ndash; before the introduction of the piece de resistance: a turntable, with DJ Shadow vinyl on the deck, encased in a block of ice.&nbsp;Now that really is cool.

Dan Emmerson and DoP Deepa Keshvala team up for an excellent visual portrait shot on 16mm for Skream.Following South London shuffling icon Mr. Shapes, the video is as much a portrait of a cultural movement as it is a portrait of a local legend. The mixture of candid shots in with the more staged compositions helps to show both the legend and&nbsp;the man.

Skream 'You Know, Right' by Dan Emmerson

Rejjie Snow&#39;s visit to the dentist takes a nightmarish turn in this darkly comic video by Max Weiland.Dentist trips are never fun unless you&#39;re some sort of hideous masochist who enjoys that sort of thing. So the idea of going to a backstreet dentist where anything could happen is a horrific proposition indeed. Yet here Rejjie Snow is, up for anything apparently.The cast of characters here make the waiting room a darkly surreal place to be and the horrors of the dentist&#39;s chair get all too real (mostly because of the use of actual dental surgery footage intercut here for maximum impact). Dark, comical, stylised and somehow cool.

Tyrone Lebon has created&nbsp;this patchwork of visuals for&nbsp;Frank Ocean&#39;s new track&nbsp;Nikes, which sees an enterpretation of the song with&nbsp;snippets of footage in various degrees of filmic quality.&nbsp;Including grainy handicam clips of casting calls, strippers and parties full of glitter, as well as more composed, considered imagery, the video stages conventional video tropes and then breaks the&nbsp;illusion by revealing their artifice through BTS clips.&nbsp;Heavy on the neon-tinged&nbsp;nighttime atmospherics, it&#39;s a video to accompany an occasionally sparse,&nbsp;evocative track, culminating in a self-immolation sequence where Frank&nbsp;is set on fire...&quot;I interpreted the song as a stream of Frank&rsquo;s consciousness - rich with snippets of stories, emotions and ideas,&quot; Lebon explains, &quot;The visuals came immediately when I first heard the song - they all follow from the music and Frank&rsquo;s lyrics.&quot;&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]
