The Director of Photography on how he learned his craft shooting promos,&nbsp;his contribution to the RAYE video that earned him a nomination at this year's UKMVAs, and the downside of showing off to your kids.With hundreds of promos to his credit, David Wright (above left) has been one of the most prolific cinematographers working in the British music video industry over the past decade. He has pointed his camera at artists such as&nbsp;Charlie XCX,&nbsp;Skepta, Stormzy, Slowthai, Dave, Fredo, Bastille, Wolf Alice, Mahalia, Muse, Little Simz, Drake, J Hus and Young Fathers - to name just a few.Now with his considerable experience he is an in-demand DoP on commercials, and also independent features - such as the award-winning&nbsp;The Devil's&nbsp;Harmony. His output of videos may have slowed down, but his outstanding work on the epic video for RAYE's Genesis earlier this year was recognised at the recent UK Music Video Awards, where he was nominated for the Best Cinematography in a Video prize for the first time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Which felt like an opportune&nbsp;moment to catch up with David to ask for a Snapshot of what he's up to right now.&nbsp;Name: David WrightBirthday: Born in the 80s, grew up in the 90s, moved to London in 2005.Where did you grow up? Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar.Favourite music video/videos you’ve seen this year? <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2024/10/14/mustard-ft-travis-scott-parking-lot-jeremi-durand/88526" target="_blank">Parking Lot by Mustard featuring Travis Scott</a>.Name a film or video or other creative work that had a huge influence on your career choice?For music videos, I was introduced to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directors_Label" target="_blank">Directors Label DVDs</a> when I was 16 – Glazer, Cunningham, Gondry and Jonze. Their work, especially Jonathan Glazer’s, had a profound impact.Glazer's&nbsp;creativity in videos like [Jamiroquai's]&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkIs37a2JE" target="_blank">Virtual Insanity</a> and [Radiohead's] Karma Police was inspiring, but what stood out was every video felt original and incredibly inventive. The idea that a single, bold concept, when executed with the right sensibility, is all it takes to create a truly iconic video; he did it again and again.[vidtoken data:1]<blockquote>A single, bold concept, executed with the right sensibility, is all it takes to create a truly iconic video.</blockquote>In terms of the music video-related jobs of the past year or so, what were the most rewarding creatively, and why?Definitely <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2024/06/13/raye-genesis-otis-dominique-raye/86792" target="_blank">RAYE’s Genesis video</a>. It reminded me why I love promos. We experimented with various formats – 35mm, 16mm, 8mm, Alexa LF, Thermal, iPhone and had a range of equipment to play with such as cranes and experimental camera accessories.RAYE and director Otis Dominique were very engaged with idea that we collaborated together. I was able to suggest things like separating the mouth in the glass from its background, the in-camera repeating infinity effect (from live video feedback) and ordering custom <a href="https://proav.co.uk/lighting/dedolight-6-gobo-set-for-dp1s-projection-attachment-imager?srsltid=AfmBOoq1XvQ5dIBppdJxd4b6I2VkdlvItCvfPpM1jwVth1Oe7vLwFVVG" target="_blank">Gobos</a> with the Genesis logo for the <a href="https://stagedepot.co.uk/lighting/profiles/tungsten-profiles/etc-source-four-ellipsoidal-tungsten-profile-fixed-beam-lens?sku=ETC-7060A1210&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiA6Ou5BhCrARIsAPoTxrCSYQk3SHyPxK3xF9nN44iwA6PFMneD-mdP4n-5ACL7wlsLEm0pHswaAjl_EALw_wcB" target="_blank">Source Fours</a>. It was so satisfying to be able to embellish their project with extra details like those.&nbsp;[vidtoken data:2] &nbsp;<blockquote>[On Genesis] we experimented with various formats – 35mm, 16mm, 8mm, Alexa LF, Thermal, iPhone.</blockquote>What are your favourite other (non-mv) projects of the past year or so?I recently finished post-production on a feature film that I’m hopeful will catch some attention. The director is an artist and wanted to pepper the film with classical framings from painters such as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_Vel%C3%A1zquez" target="_blank">Velazquez</a> and sometimes use trance-like, surreal sequences to tell the story. The film, <a href="http://film-directory.britishcouncil.org/two-neighbors" target="_blank">Two Neighbours</a>&nbsp;(below), is a dark, funny, hypnotic fable about jealousy and femininity. I’m excited for its release to see how people will interpret it.[imgtoken data:1]What’s the most surprising thing that’s happened this year? Being nominated for a UKMVA for Best Cinematography In A Video. Feeling very honoured.<blockquote>I make a point to offer advice freely and I think mentoring should be done more widely.</blockquote>Most annoying/irksome thing that’s been going on this year (work-related or otherwise)? Dislocating my shoulder was particularly irksome! My takeaway is not to try too hard to impress my young kids.Your top suggestion to change and improve how the music video industry works? Personally, breaking into the industry was a challenge for me. I would have benefited greatly from a mentor, so I appreciate the difference that can make to emerging talents. I make a point to offer advice freely and I think mentoring should be done more widely.What are you looking forward to most for the rest of the year - and next year? RAYE - Genesis.

Otis Dominique and RAYE continue their standout collaborative streak with this dazzling seven-minute epic for Genesis.&nbsp;It's a video of two parts - the first five minutes are a darkly conceptual, twisty ride through societal woes, fear and&nbsp;depression. The final two minutes are the antithesis of this, exuding hope, light and love.&nbsp;Shot across a week, the video is hugely ambitious, with a blockbuster sense of scale and&nbsp;an infectious mix of choreography, performance and conceptual vignettes. DoP David Wright responds brilliantly to the complexity of Dominique and RAYE's brief, with cinematography that spans from darkly cinematic to mock-TV ad colourful&nbsp; to&nbsp;off-the cuff doc style.[imgtoken data:1]Written by Dominique, RAYE and her creative director Mikey Robbins, it's a&nbsp;momentous visual - one of the biggest of the year so far.&nbsp;“It's always special when me, RAYE and Mikey link up but feel we went to a different, different level with this one!" Dominique says, justifiably."It feels surreal that it’s actually out in the world now and people can take it in. We shot the video across seven days and the whole crew and team were phenomenal too and I’m honoured to have met and worked with so many great people throughout this project. It’s hard to sum up in few words but hopefully the film and music can do the talking for now 🖤”

Jeremi Durand wraps up his trilogy of videos for&nbsp;Yodelice, with this stirring promo for The Light Of My Hands.&nbsp;Exploring themes of life, death and reincarnation, the third and final chapter of the project dramatises a birth that takes place in extraordinary circumstances. A&nbsp;female couple are in a forest when the pregnant member goes into labour and an emergency delivery takes place right there, in the midst of nature.[imgtoken data:1]This follows the second video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2022/11/30/yodelice-trust-fall-jeremi-durand/79516" target="_blank">Trust Fall</a> - which shows an interpretation of what could be death and reincarnation - and celebrates the&nbsp;the most incredible act of them all: birth. In The Light Of My Hands, the result is a baby being born who wears&nbsp;a subtle mark on his left cheek, like the main characters in the other chapters.&nbsp;&nbsp;Released on International Women’s Day - March 8th, 2023 - this is an ode to beauty, to nature and to humanity in general, with an intensity as well as uplifting quality that comes from terrific performances from&nbsp;Camelia Lumbroso and Nina Aboutajedyne, allied with luminous cinematography by David Wright.&nbsp;

Jeremi Durand takes viewers on a&nbsp;transitional journey between life, death and rebirth, in this alluring promo for French singer-songwriter Yodelice.In the video for Trust Fall, we see the artist's body transformed&nbsp;into a shimmering crystalline structure, a million diamonds forming a symbol of eternity,&nbsp;but also representing a form of unattainable richness that blinds us.The video was partly shot on Kinect to create the&nbsp;CGI world -&nbsp;FIRM and FAUBOURG in Paris&nbsp;spent months transforming the thousands of image dots into a multitude of textured diamonds in motion.Durand - who directed the video for Muse's Compliance, nominated at this year's UKMVAs - has created a video for Yodelice that has a haunting undertone, elevated by the cool blue colour palette and contrast of human versus cosmic energy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A man has some painful memories reconfigured in Elliot Simpson's promo for Joel Corry and Becky Hills.&nbsp;In the same faux-utopic vein as previous&nbsp;collabs <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2021/11/11/joel-corry-ft-mabel-i-wish-elliot-simpson/73789">I Wish&nbsp;</a>and <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2021/03/11/joel-corry-x-raye-x-david-guetta-bed-elliot-simpson/69885">Bed</a>, the sci-fi concept in History proposes a world in which memories can be altered and 'put right', via a personal home visit from Joel,&nbsp;Becky and their futuristic arsenal of gadgets.&nbsp;The narrative perfectly blends the borders of surrealism and reality, and gives the artists a chance to flex their acting muscles in addition to some very filmic performance setups.&nbsp;Seamless and slick, the video is equal parts Black Mirror and pop promo, and is a real visual treat.&nbsp;

Jordan Rossi takes Craig David into a colourful surrealist adventure for his video for&nbsp;My Heart's Been Waiting For You.Craig performs this garage-influenced club hit in a serious of increasingly surreal settings, with outer space encroaching into modern-day London. And periodically everything then suddenly ramps up into another dazzling visual dimension.[imgtoken data:1]"The brief was wide open," explains Rossi.&nbsp;"All that was stated was they wanted a green screen video that had the vibe of Craig's tour footage. I took that and ran with it, and wanted to craft a luminous surrealist fantasy that was equal parts Dali with Craig's R&amp;B-pop aesthetic."Craig was the best collaborator a director could ask for. Hugely respectful of the art but always wanted to push the boundaries creatively. It meant that what was a green screen video became a smash of reality and illusion in the most entrancing of ways. The final result is a fantasia of colour and other worldly scenarios. All seemingly familiar but with a twist."
