Kat Penkin 'Ugh' by Harry Tomlin
Rob Ulitski - 14th May 2025
Harry Tomlin puts a breezy twist on the story of Adam & Eve in his latest for singer Kat Penkin, turning it into a female revenge fantasy. How do you like those apples?
The video for Ugh begins in a crowded waiting room, where a young man ditches his girlfriend to chat up the receptionist - played by Kat. She offers him an apple - and with one bite he's transported to Eden-like countryside. Kat is about to teach him a lesson.
What follows is an entertaining comedy, where Kat expresses her disgust by terrorising the chat-up guy in outlandish scenarios - usually involving apples - plus wonderfully stylised performance set-ups which accentuate Kat Penkin's cheeky and irreverent personality.
“I wanted the opening scene to subvert the style of the piece," says Tomlin. "Cinematic, desaturated and slow, luring the viewer into a world that we would soon flip on its head. Then we gave ourselves the licence to go all out with the rest. Bright, saturated, poppy, infectiously fun.
“Unlike some of my other work, I wanted this to feel very graphic and editorial, taking inspiration from photography and magazine covers to bring an iconic style as Kat enters a new era in her career with her new EP!”
“I love working with Kat, we have a great shorthand and a real mutual trust in each other which always allows for a fun process and fantastic end result.
"We started discussing the Garden of Eden and how exciting it could be to explore this cheeky, subversive world, that felt slightly perverse in how ‘Adam’ was being tortured, but ultimately sympathising and rooting for Kat.”
