Arlo Parks 'Jasmine' by Joel Barney
Rob Ulitski - 9th Nov 2023
Joel Barney directs a cinematic performance promo for Arlo Parks's cover of the Jai Paul track Jasmine, shot at Coney Island beach, using the iconic backdrop to provide a wistful and nostalgic vibe.
Playing out in a transcendent, relaxed way, the video is dreamlike in its presentation, and is elevated by the evocative cinematography.
"We wanted to create a video in which Arlo's performance was at the centre," Joel Barney explains. "She is such a captivating performer, we wanted to really allow the audience to take in an intimate performance from her, creating a space in which her performance shines through."
Barney adds that he and Parks wanted motion and movement to be at the core of the video.
"Arlo and I spoke a lot about the way Wong Kar Wai uses motion in his work, which was something we wanted to explore in the video. Using in camera techniques like dropped shutter, long static zooms and also having the subway almost acting as a character in some ways, creating this constant sense of movement.
"We were up at the crack of dawn catching sunrise, but the stunning gradient sky we got down on the beach made the early morning well worth it."
