Blur 'St. Charles Square' by Toby L
Promonews - 28th July 2023
To the delight of their legion of fans, Blur are back once again, on tour playing all the old favourites - and with a new album.
Toby L and team have captured the band on the road to create a hugely dynamic and enjoyable promo for one of the songs from the just-released The Ballad Of Darren.
"The video for St Charles Square was shot on location at the band’s first performances in almost 10 years, occurring in less frequented towns and cities across the UK, including Colchester, Eastbourne, Wolverhampton and Newcastle," explains Toby L. "The shows were emotional, sweaty and very close. We wanted to merge the tension and paranoia of the song’s lyrics and themes with the infamous intensity and power of Blur’s live sets.
"We played around with shutter speeds, leant into whip pans and crash zooms, as well as looping certain moments, offering a subtle nod to their early Popscene video, a song which we feel possesses a similar sense of kinetic chaos. It’s in black and white to mirror the photographic aesthetic of their current era and new album, The Ballad of Darren.
"Accumulatively it somehow means that 'new Blur' is recalling 'classic Blur', remaining both contemporaneous and timeless in equal measure. The present and past colliding harmonically, creating something new in the process."
