Billie Marten 'Liquid Love' by Joe Wheatley
Joe Wheatley directs a precious moment in time for Billie Marten's Liquid Love.
Shot in one smooth take, as the singer-songwriter walks to where her friends are hanging out in an idyllic summer scene by the lake, the visual transcends the format, feeling almost like a scene unfolding somewthere between real life and a dream.
Meditative in its presentation, the choice to shoot on film and keep things to one take elevates the authentic nature of what is captured in front of the camera - including Billie's subtle performance - and the video already feels remarkably timeless and iconic.
Keep an eye out for frequent Wheatley collaborator Willie J Healey - on the tree swing - and Will Taylor from Flyte, among the cast of friends.
It’s simply a portrait of friends who are in love, some of them in liquid.
"Billie had very clear images for how she saw this film and said the song is about ‘being in liquid and being in love'. I had been battling with it for a while and couldn’t quite figure out how to stitch them together into a video. We almost moved into production on two other concepts, but at the final hour this concept came to me which was by far the most simple, and the most beautiful.
"I was inspired by images which Billie’s photographer, Katie Silvester, had shot of Hackney Marshes with people just being at peace with a kind of halcyon mood. I wanted to create more of a vibe than any form of narrative. It’s simply a portrait of friends who are in love, some of them in liquid.
"A huge thanks to all the cast and crew for their time and patience. I typically work with people I know and on this occasion I hadn’t worked with anyone on set before. Most of them I hadn’t even met until the day – including the DP, Adam Singodia.
"Considering it was one take, Steadicam and shot on film I was naturally apprehensive, but everyone absolutely smashed it and I am indebted to them."
