Birdy 'Loneliness' by Sophie Muller
Rob Ulitski - 15th Feb 2021
Sophie Muller directs a haunting promo in reverse for regular collaborator Birdy.Â
Following the stripped-back seaside vision for Surrender back in January, the video for Loneliness encompasses the same vulnerability and wistful performance style, with a more conceptual and experimental aesthetic.Â
With cinematography by Robbie Ryan and art direction from Alison Dominitz, Muller mixes contemporary, dilapidated locations with vintage patterns and materials, giving the project a universal and timeless feel. The desaturated colour palettes elevate the melancholic atmosphere, and are reminiscent of their previous collaborations, and one of the director's most iconic visuals, Nelly Furtado's Try.Â
The use of reverse footage adds another layer of surreality to the promo, representing the themes of loss and loneliness, and the feeling that things aren't quite what they seem.Â
