Sam Wise X BlazeYL 'The Sandman' by Elliot Simpson
Rob Ulitski - 29th Jan 2021
Elliot Simpson pays homage to Kennington in South London, in his dynamic promo for Sam Wise's The Sandman, featuring BlazeYL.
Jumping between unique performance vignettes - both shot and directed by Simpson - and lo-fi VHS B-roll, the video paints an authentic picture of the district, whilst showcasing the artists in a fun and celebratory fashion.
ELLIOT SIMPSON:
Shooting in a raw, spontaneous way... can remind us why we started making videos in the first place!
"I first linked up with Sam Wise on a project for Adidas at the beginning of last year and we’ve been waiting for the opportunity to shoot a music video for one of his projects. For Sandman feat. Blaze YL we wanted to create an atmospheric film that gives an authentic glimpse into life in Kennington, South London.
"It was cool to go back to basics on this shoot. We had no budget, so I directed, DP’d, edited, and graded this video, with additional VHS footage and stills photography shot by my friend Jack Johnson.
"I felt that the stills were really important in this video as they helped to create that feeling of getting a raw snapshot of Kennington, and the characters in the video, and it contrasted nicely with the more cinematic footage we captured.
"It’s nice sometimes to get away from all of the equipment and time that is involved in a more technical, or heavily-produced project, and it can be the most fun when you can get back to shooting in a raw, spontaneous way. Think it can remind us why we started making videos in the first place!
"Me and Sam Wise are going to be working on a series of visuals from his next project, where we’re going to be doing bigger and better things so keep an eye out for them this year."
