Amy Ayanda 'Beginners' by Maxime Thaysen
Rob Ulitski - 5th Jan 2021
Amy Ayanda makes magic out of the mundane, in Maxime Thaysen's charming promo for Beginners.
The film grapples with the challenges and wonder of first time parenthood; fear, sleep deprivation, diminishing me-time and loss of identity, as heard in the lyrics.
Opening with a setup where Ayanda tries - and fails - to escape from her kid for a moment of peace, the video progresses into a series of ethereal performance vignettes, where she incorporates props from around the house into her glamourous, fantasy-life daydreams.
It's a beautiful piece of work, elevated by DoP Nicol Dippenaar's dreamy, daylight-filled cinematography and an authentic performance from Ayanda throughout.
