Mali-Koa 'Dancer' by Jess Journo
Rob Ulitski - 7th May 2020
Mali-Koa reflects on how easy it is to feel limited by your environment or the people that surround you, in Jess Journo's visual for Dancer.
Stripped-back, stark surroundings are the backdrop to the performance, which switches from solo lip-sync shots to six-person, unified dance movements. Koa had never danced in a video before this one, so it is a great tie-in to the themes and limitations expressed in the lyrics.
DoP Beatriz Sastre utilises slow, steady camera movement and a limited colour palette to allow the choreography to breathe, and shine against the cold, blue-tinged surroundings.
Cutting through boundaries to become the best version of herself, the message at the core of the visual is that when life throws obstacles your way, all you can and must do is dance with it and keep moving forward.
