Charlotte Cardin 'The Kids' by Kristof Brandl
David Knight - 18th Jan 2018
DoP-turned-director Kristof Brandl won an MVA last year for his first video for Charlotte Cardin. That was intense, but it was just a prelude to this extraordinarily powerful work for Cardin's The Kids.
This is a white-knuckle ride of emotional turmoil, delivered with a stunning command of imagery, drawing on themes of innocence, addiction, pain and love. We experience it through the eyes of a young boy in a broken family, withdrawing from his opiated parents.
Incorporating both VFX-fired surrealism and dialogue, Brandl's hard-bitten story relates an unmistakeable truth: how the delicate trajectory of a child’s life hinges on their environment during their upbringing. And with it, he has also announced himself as an exceptionally talented director.
