Radiohead 'The Numbers' by Paul Thomas Anderson
David Knight - 6th Oct 2016
Paul Thomas Anderson's third video for Radiohead's album A Moon-Shaped Pool follows the template of the second for Present Tense. It's Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, a CR78 (apparently, whatever that is), outside in the country, and it's live.
Like Present Tense, it's a bit of an anti-video, and not the enigmatic masterpiece that is Anderson's pondered-over video for Daydreaming. But, there's still something special about this. First and foremost, there's the evidence, if any were needed, that Greenwood is a bit of a guitar player.Â
The set-up brings to mind Garth Jennings and Adam Buxton's string of videos for Radiohead's In Rainbows album, created over an intense long weekend of online broadcasts, which included Yorke and Greenwood driving through Oxfordshire countryside at speed to perform an impromptu version of Faust Arp on a rainspecked hillside in the last moments of daylight. Here's the Californian version.
