Actor Damian Lewis announces his new career direction into music with She Comes, and a music video&nbsp;courtesy of colleagues from his projects in TV drama - in particular, DoP Jake Polonsky and director Nick Murphy.Filmed in the Master Shipwright's House in Deptford -&nbsp;one of the few remaining parts of Deptford’s former royal dockyard, built in the early 18th century and now fully restored - the result is a performance video where Murphy and Polonsky&nbsp; maximise the character&nbsp;of the space to reflect the emotional weight of the song.Lewis has said that She Comes "is the first song I wrote for my debut&nbsp;album, so that makes it... my first song - that I've shared with the world, at any rate. It’s about&nbsp;ghosts, and one ghost in particular." Although he does not mention her directly, its hard to imagine that he is not referring to his late wife, the actor Helen McCrory, who died of cancer in 2021.In the video he starts the song on his own, on a staircase in the house. Other people pass him on the stairs - they are the band, and soon they are together, performing&nbsp;in a large empty wood-lined room. It's a fine setting to showcase Lewis's undoubted musical talent, presented with elegance by Jake Polonsky - who shot several seasons of Lewis's hit HBO show&nbsp;Billions, having started his career in cinematography shooting&nbsp;numerous promos&nbsp;- and Nick Murphy, who directed the recent TV movie A Spy Among Friends, in which Lewis starred.For the grade, Polonsky and producer Phil Tidy called upon another master craftsman who originally made his name in music videos - Simone Grattarolla, senior colourist at Time Based Arts, sealing the shift in tone between the brightness of the band in performance, and shots of Lewis in more reflective moments in the shadows.About the video Damian Lewis adds: “We hoped to convey the feeling of an abandoned house, of the ghost of the woman that once lived there and a group of friends gathering to celebrate her.”

The third video from the Arctic Monkeys latest album The Car continues in the same vein as the previous two - like a viewing a random mix&nbsp;of old film footage of a Seventies band, that rather magically hangs together.The band's longtime collaborator Ben Chappell follows Brook Linder (with <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2022/10/06/arctic-monkeys-body-paint-brook-linder/78633" target="_blank">Body Paint</a>) and band frontman Alex Turner (with <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2022/09/09/arctic-monkeys-thered-better-be-mirrorball-alex-turner/78221" target="_blank">There'd Better Be A Mirrorball</a>) in helming the video for Sculptures Of Anything Goes, and it's another gorgeous experience, revelling in the irreplaceable quality of working in the medium of film, allowing the aesthetic to do the heavy lifting.It also has to be the coolest way to&nbsp;frame Turner's intent&nbsp;to be regarded as a modern-day crooner. That might just pay off.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The first taste of the Arctic Monkeys new album The Car comes with a video directed by frontman Alex Turner. It's very cool indeed.This is the first video that Turner has directed for the band (we think) but he's known to be a keen devotee of film&nbsp;and that really shows here. It's a lovely cinematic rendering of the band recording the song, which both appears to be verité-real yet also has its own artful, impressionistic&nbsp;sensibility. It echoes the classic style of both pioneering rock documentaries for the Sixties and Seventies, and Nineties&nbsp;MTV-era videos, and that really compliments&nbsp;the unhurried, slow-burning There'd Better Be A Mirrorball.Turner is credited as one of the camera operators on this, together with longtime collaborator Ben Chappell - formerly of directing duo Focus Creeps -&nbsp;and the overall effect is somewhere between Godard, Focus Creeps and a great music video director (who, like the band, also came from Sheffield) Peter Care.&nbsp;

Leo Leigh's debut video,&nbsp;for Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood's new project The Smile, is a singularly intense experience. Leigh more or less dispenses with the causes of a trauma to confront the viewer with the harrowing results. You can only watch and wonder why - while listening to the altogether more gentle Free In The Knowledge.There are a couple of remarkable performances in the video, demonstrating distress and anguish in such visceral ways that it's hard not to think that some genuinely bad stuff happened just prior to when the camera started to roll.Halfway through, there are glimpses of exposition, snatches of other characters, and a ritualistic ceremony, suggestng the power dynamic of&nbsp;this haggard forest tribe. But it's those first two minutes that leave the most powerful impression.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Weeknd heralds his new album Dawn FM with a spectacular and nightmarish promo from Matilda Finn.&nbsp;The video for Gasoline is dripping in Finn's harrowing, hyperreal aesthetic, and follows an elderly version of the artist, who crashes his car into a stop sign and descends into a Hellish realm.&nbsp;He regains consciousness in a crowded room, where sinful beings are grappling for whatever physical pleasures they can acquire -&nbsp;sex, drugs, violence... it's all on the cards in this place.&nbsp;The crowd begin to show their true colours, as their faces distort into monstrous forms, and The Weeknd has a face-off with a younger version of himself, ending in another death.&nbsp;This is an enigmatic expression of existential despair in Matilda Finn's signature style, and it's&nbsp;outstanding work. The video touches upon life, death and addiction, and does so with sublime style - and lots of creepy crawlies.&nbsp;

After the intense dramatisations of life for black Londoners in their&nbsp;powerful films&nbsp;for Trouble and Teardrops, Kano and&nbsp;Aneil Karia offer a complete change of pace, and setting,&nbsp;with A Blessed Place.It's a short film about Kano's inspiration behind the new Duppy White rum he has created following him on a return ot Jamaica. As he tours the island, from countryside to downtown, it reveals another side of the London rapper - the strength of&nbsp;bond to his Jamaican roots and love for the island.And with Karia's unobtrusive observational direction, this is a brand film that could hardly feel more like a documetary - which also features some wonderful music.

For their previously unreleased song Follow Me Around, Radiohead have a wonderful new video by directing&nbsp;duo Us -&nbsp;Chris Barrett and Luke Taylor - starring Guy Pearce. He plays the hapless victim of a particularly tenacious insect - and we, the viewer,&nbsp;are that pesky bug.&nbsp;A simple idea is transformed by Barrett and Taylor's brilliant employment of up-to-the-minute tech. And indeed, minute tech: the entire video is shot on a&nbsp;tiny drone&nbsp;that speeds through London streets, and through tiny spaces, and finds its way to Pearce's East London home - where the relentless attack&nbsp;by the bug begins. Everything we see comes from insect-POV, as we witness Pearce's increasing desperation and panic.[imgtoken data:1]Us were inspired to look through the mini-critter's eyes, having spent a summer combatting mosquitos. They were also inspired by&nbsp;footage of tiny drones that can go through anywhere at speed.&nbsp;With the brilliant casting of Pearce, Barrett and Taylor have also elevated the concept further, adding a level of ambiguity&nbsp;where surveillance, paranoia and the humble mosquito meet.&nbsp;The formatting of the camera was made to emulate both the period of the song, with its lo-fi 420p resolution, and also the idea of surveillance cameras, as well as the erratic and somewhat flailing camp of vision one imagines a mosquito’s to be. Married with Guy Pearce’s outstanding acting, the sparse visuals are meant to make the viewer feel as uncomfortable as the character on the screen.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]And why is Pearce being targetted?&nbsp;We really can only guess, as the one thing we cannot see is the attacker itself - is this actually an insect, or perhaps another form of Bug...It is of course perfect for the lovely song Follow Me Around, a live favourite which dates back to the era of OK Computer,&nbsp;that Radiohead are only now releasing, on the new Kid A/Amnesiac sessions project. This one goes direct to the pantheon of great Radiohead videos.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As we welcome in the new year, here's a personal perspective of the unprecedented&nbsp;one that has just passed into history, from poet&nbsp;Hussain Manawer, brought to the screen by Jake Polonsky BSC.A cinematographer&nbsp;who has worked on hit TV show&nbsp;Billions&nbsp;over the past few years,&nbsp;Polonsky returns to shortform&nbsp;- where he made his name as a DoP on music videos in the late Nineties and early Noughties- to direct this visualisation of Manawer's personal account of lockdown, and his strategem to deal with its effect on his mental health.As the poet reads in a recording studio, a sole dancer begins to perform in a huge, empty space - The Troxy in East London, looking glorious, and prepared for its next live show before an audience, whenever that may be. The dancer works his way through the room, and the neat rows of seats, to make for the stage...Shot by Haris Zambarloukos BSC, with Polonsky filming other London venues, all designed to serve a specific community - a primary school, a mosque, a synagogue, and various other important&nbsp;live music venues - 2020 Vision was shot on the <a href="https://fujifilm-x.com/global/products/cameras/gfx100/" target="_blank">Fujifilm&nbsp;GFX100 large format camera</a>, and the film was made possible through finance by Fuji as well as support from a variety of bodies, from Time Based Arts and Panalux to the Music Venues Trust and Save Our Venues.&nbsp;It certainly serves to show how important those venues are to our collective wellbeing.&nbsp;

Paul Mescal makes an emotional call to his girlfriend at the beginning of the video for The Rolling Stones' Scarlet, directed by Chris Barrett and Luke Taylor - aka Us.&nbsp;So far, so Normal People.&nbsp;But then we notice that Mescal is living in the lap of luxury. In fact he has the run of Claridge's Hotel, no less.&nbsp;After leaving a half-drunken love note to his girlfriend, Mescal&nbsp;(the sensitive Connell&nbsp;in TV hit&nbsp;Normal People) spins this previously unreleased track from The Stones' early '70s&nbsp;album&nbsp;Goat's Head Soup,&nbsp;proceeds to drink his body weight in whiskey, dance cheesily in the mirror, have an emotional breakdown and trash the hotel room.&nbsp;And then he heads down to the hotel lobby - which is even grander than the one in that other famous deserted hotel video, Weapon Of Choice.&nbsp;The video was made under social distancing guidelines, and clearly it could not have happened at any other time - and probably for no other band in the world. It's certainly a treat for the growing legion of the Mescal fans - and for fans of Barrett and Taylor too.

Aneil Karia directs a harrowing narrative set in a dystopian&nbsp;Britain, for Riz Ahmed's The Long Goodbye.&nbsp;Taking place&nbsp;in a nondescript town in Surrey, we are introduced to a British South Asian family in a bustling household- one son is trying to teach his Dad -played by Ahmed- dance moves, whilst the other is cosied up on the sofa with his girlfriend, playing games and chilling out. Several other family members are spotted around the house, with a group of girls getting ready upstairs, and the grandfather&nbsp;trying his best to catch the news on the TV, amongst the flurry of activity.&nbsp;In the midst of the chaos, we see moments that are universally relatable -&nbsp;trying to manage different family members and their short tempers, moving furniture around to accommodate more people for a party. Small snapshots of everyday life to paint a picture of the family dynamic. Having stumbled around with an old chair for several minutes, to the dismay of several family members, Ahmed sets it down in a cramped room, before noticing an alarming scene unfolding across the road.&nbsp;In broad daylight, a group of white men in black uniforms are forceably removing people from their homes. The tone of the video shifts as Ahmed screams for everyone to run for cover, exclaiming "This is it. It's happening now". The uniformed gang catch up to Ahmed and his loved ones, in a truly haunting third-act.This near-future dystopia is conceptualised brilliantly by director&nbsp;Aneil Karia, <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/07/24/kano-trouble-aneil-karia/59936">who won an MVA last year for his collaboration with Kano</a>, and is known for his work on TV series such as Top Boy. Uncomfortable and confrontational, this isn't an overly exaggerated narrative with tonnes of creative license. This is one or two missteps into the future, the potential result of the current political climate and events such as the ongoing Windrush scandal. The surreal&nbsp;transition from happy family&nbsp;to mindless murder on the street is made only more harrowing given its basis in reality.&nbsp;DoP&nbsp;Stuart Bentley creates an authentic aesthetic through the use of natural daylight and documentary-style camera movement, succinctly&nbsp;matching the tone of the project. This is a concept very much based in the real world, and Bentley ensures the cinematography is as unobtrusive as possible.&nbsp;Karia is an exceptional talent bringing important stories to the forefront, and a perfect match to such a visceral concept and track. A one-take monologue at the end of the video depicts Ahmed rising with a newfound strength, confronting the camera directly with the deplorable reality that is staring us all in the face:&nbsp;“Don’t question us about our loyalty, our blood and sweat’s enough / Born under a sun that you made too hot for us / Kidnapped by Empire and diaspora fostered us.”• Behind The Scenes feature on The Long Goodbye on <a href="https://wepresent.wetransfer.com/story/riz-ahmed-the-long-goodbye/" target="_blank">WePresent</a>

The two-part film, co-directed by Harry Barber and Kano, explores the London rapper’s Jamaican heritage and influences, and culminates in the most humble but important of gatherings - the coming together of friends to eat and drink.In&nbsp;this fly-on-the-wall-style documentary, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7vANW3jaAM" target="_blank">the first part of the film</a> serves as a prelude to the actual video for Kano's collaboration with Jamaican superstar Popcaan on Can't Hold We Down. Kano discusses his numerous trips to Jamaica since childhood, before he heads down to favourite East London shops with his mum to prepare for the feast - where they are joined by Popcaan, just arrived from Jamaica.&nbsp;In <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fCQ4drZkOE" target="_blank">Part 2 of the film</a>, we are back at Kano's mum's place, and the documentary dovetails smoothly into the music video. As Kano and Popcaan perform, dinner is cooked and served to friends, family and these legends of grime and dancehall. But not before mum blesses the table.&nbsp;
