Joy Crookes' throws herself into a relationship, for better and for worse, in an impressive step into a full-blown narrative video by directing duo Ethan &amp; Tom.In the video for Painkiller, Ethan &amp; Tom put an engagingly&nbsp;fresh spin on the story of a faltering&nbsp;love affair. That is partly down to the structure, but mainly due to how good Joy Crookes is in the role, and her chemistry with her leading man.Shot across Chicago, the film follows Joy through the city as the scales tip - from a happy start through to her waning confidence in the relationship, incorporating performance with the fastmoving narrative and then including Denzel Curry's rap on a karaoke screen.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Joy's&nbsp;brief for the video was specific: the relationship should read as good at the start, and the illusion should come apart as the song does, so by the end the audience has watched a man's charm curdle. Ethan &amp; Tom hold to that arc while keeping the tone light. The song has a tongue-in-cheek quality about someone who keeps being forgiven despite themselves, and the video carries that – it is a sad song shot with a sense of irreverence, fun, and abandon.Part of the success of the video is the casting of Joy's leading man.&nbsp;After a conventional search failed to produce worthy leading-man candidates, Partizan producer Danny Herman street-cast Matt Whipps at The Wormhole Coffee Shop in Chicago shortly before the shoot. His unrehearsed naturalism against Joy's performance lets the relationship's slow collapse register as observed rather than acted.Ultimately this is a confident step-up by Ethan &amp; Tom into narrative territory. It moves between two textures – the immediacy of Chicago and the degraded warmth of tape – without losing its thread. With an excellent cut by editor Liv Ay,&nbsp;it reads as a breakup told in glimpses; funny where it needs to be, and honest about how long it takes to see what was in front of you.&nbsp;

Partizan has announced the signing of Egyptian photographer and director Hussein Mardini.With a background in stills and a practice that has grown outward into moving image, Mardini&nbsp;brings a photographer's discipline to filmmaking, with a strong visual craft and a clear sense of how an idea holds together across a sequence.His work moves between high-profile brand campaigns, music projects and self-initiated documentaries, unified less by subject than by approach. Hussein’s films are characterised by patience with a subject and precision in the frame; an eye trained on stills, applied to motion. His music work includes the video for Wazira by Palestinian singer&nbsp;Saint Levant.He has collaborated with GQ, Nowness and Afroto. His films balance atmosphere and clarity, delivering work that feels contemporary while remaining grounded in the core idea. For the short dance film Ballet du Caire,&nbsp;Hussein frames sha3by from a new angle, slowed down and scored to mimic classical tradition. Questioning artistic hierarchies and the Western pedestal that positions ballet as art and homegrown dance forms as low, Mardini observes a landscape that decides which movement is elevated and which is dismissed, observing the body-work of sha3by as an art form in its own right, and the ballet of a new era.&nbsp;Community sits at the centre of his thinking. He documents the places and people that genuinely interest him, and shoots from close range rather than at a distance, a proximity that carries into his commercial work, where people register as people rather than set dressing. His film "El Leila El Kebeera" captures the joyous Moulids celebrated across Egypt.“I grew up in Cairo,&nbsp;I watched my generation invent an art form with its own instincts, learned from each other in rooms with no institutional blessing," says Mardini. Yasser Abubeker invites us into an ultra-cool nighttime world of sleek seduction for Kelela's steamy team-up with PinkPantheress.The video for The Bridge, is Abubeker's study in restraint and proximity with the&nbsp;two artists moving through the same space, held apart by it, and gradually pulled together. Meanwhile other couples, situated around a moody, depopulated darkening urban space&nbsp;are also being drawn towards each other.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Set within a dimly-lit apartment, the video opens with Kelela and PinkPantheress in separate rooms, each carrying the same unspoken tension. The architecture does the work of keeping them apart, but as the track builds, that separation begins to dissolve. Movement takes over, spreading rhythmically between the two artists and the surrounding cast until the space between them collapses entirely.Yasser builds the film around a shared physical language, sustaining an erotic charge throughout, via the cinematography of Diara Sow and choreography by Mesh Henry. A gesture that begins in one room and concludes in another, bodies echoing one another across locations — so that the film feels physically interconnected long before its subjects ever meet.[imgtoken data:2]&nbsp;The visual leans into a cool, restrained palette of deep blacks, washed-out greens, and muted cyans, using directional light to carve pockets of illumination from the shadows and to separate figures within a single frame.&nbsp;Production design by Ranya El-Refaey grounds the world in the transitional, intimate spaces where the song lives.&nbsp;In the final section, Kelela and PinkPantheress occupy the same space for the first time. Singer-songwriter Myles Smith steps behind the camera, writing and directing the video for his single Hold Me In The Dark -&nbsp;a short, cinematic narrative starring Stephen Graham. And the real power of the film is how it addresses a harrowing&nbsp;subject to create&nbsp;something emotional and moving.The film follows a father, played by Graham, through the final hours he spends with his dying daughter. He spends his days with her in hospital. Then each evening he returns to his flat and works obsessively on a construction of mirrors and coloured fragments... building toward something only he fully understands.The ritual looks like a man unravelling. But as the song rises, he carries the finished piece to a rooftop and, as the sun aligns, sends light spilling across the city - a final act of love, and the song’s title turned outward into image.[imgtoken data:1]A Partizan production, Myles Smith's first outing as a director sees him carrying the emotional directness of his songwriting into a new medium. In that respect he is greatly aided by the presence of a great actor in Stephen Graham, and Smith&nbsp;stays close to this&nbsp;central character throughout.Shot by cinematographer Joel Honeywell, it moves between the muted remove of the hospital, the claustrophobic loop of the flat and the open expanse of the rooftop, using natural light and a slow accumulation of colour to track the father’s emotional state. "The feeling was already there and our job was to build the right team around him and protect that vision all the way to the screen," he says."Myself and producer Chris Murdoch assembled a gang of our favourite HoDs, people we knew would bring the right experience, creativity and care to the project, while helping make it feel as special as it deserved to be," adds Herman. Erik He's third video for Irish DJ/producer Jazzy continues the stylish sensibility and use of subtle VFX that distinguishes the previous two for On A Wave and Invisible. And arguably there's a tribute to Jamiroquai's Virtual Insanity in&nbsp;her collab with Calvin Harris.&nbsp;Responding to the track's warmth and optimism, Erik He adopts a lighter visual touch than previously for Satisfy. Natural light, fluid camera movement and open architectural spaces create an effortless sense of movement throughout the film. An understated performance by Jazzy allows the music's uplifting energy to take centre stage.And the furniture is also occasionally moving across the floor within the space - reminiscent of Virtual Insanity. The result is a visual that feels as buoyant and expansive as the track itself.&nbsp;

The second of a trio of videos for Jazzy by multidisciplinary artist-turned-director Erik He finds the Irish DJ/producer in a cool bar crowded with invisible people - apart from one furious-looking older lady - and then on a dancefloor, packed with real people.Following on from the video for On A Wave (Jazzy's collab with East End Dubs), Erik He's&nbsp;video for Invisible (her collab with Chris Lorenzo) has similarly stylish, designer-led aesthetic with an&nbsp;additional side order of surrealism and subtle VFX - but this one brings Jazzy more centre-stage, to deliver her vocal performance.The&nbsp;end result looks absolutely great and demands you sit up and take notice of both the artist and the director.With a background in art practice spanning&nbsp;sculpture, performance and moving image, under He's direction&nbsp;ordinary social spaces become subtly uncanny, as anonymous, headless figures populate the frame, transforming familiar environments into psychological landscapes.Rather than relying on spectacle, restrained visual effects, atmospheric lighting, and carefully composed imagery create a world that reflects the song's emotional undercurrent, balancing performance with understated surrealism.It's another example of the skill and instinct that the director, who recently signed to Partizan, brings to the medium. One aspect is in providing an intriguing&nbsp;showcase for the artist and her music, giving her every chance&nbsp;to make a big step forward. Fabien explains how moving behind the camera is a family affair and reveals the legendary band he would love to work with.&nbsp;</h3>What’s your background? Where did you grow up?FABIEN FRANKEL: I grew up in London. My mum is French Italian and my dad is Iraqi Russian, though his family emigrated to the UK in the 1940s and settled in the East End of London. So I grew up in London, but that’s my heritage.When did you start getting into films as a director or in another role?FF: I got into films as an actor. I trained as an actor and that’s how I got into films initially. I also grew up in a very cinephile family. My family really love cinema, so it was always around.What was the first film you made where you felt this could be a career move?FF: I was making a TV show as an actor in Bangkok and I bought a Super 8mm camera in New York. It was the first gift I ever bought myself from my first acting job. <a href="https://www.imdb.com/it/title/tt7985576/?ref_=nm_flmg_job_1_accord_2_cdt_t_7" target="_blank">I brought it with me to Bangkok</a>, where I was doing another acting job, and I shot a bunch of Super 8 footage out there. I then cut it together to Little Red Rooster by The Rolling Stones. I suppose it was my first kind of music video.<blockquote>I love the process of bringing different people together when you’re making films.</blockquote>Can you tell us about your first music video and how it turned out?FF: My first music video was for some close friends of mine who started a band called Memory of Speke. I had heard demos from what would become their first release, including a song called Wife Once, and I pitched them an idea to make a 17th century Restoration style music video. They went for it.[vidtoken data:0]Where do you draw inspiration for your own work?FF: Cinema is the obvious answer. That’s been my biggest inspiration, stealing from great filmmakers and trying to find what that becomes in my own work.There’s also definitely a love of masks in what I do. I’m not entirely sure where that comes from, but whenever I come up with an idea there often seems to be something involving people being masked in some way. Both of my music videos have had elements of that. For the kid in me, that would be a massive deal.Career-wise, where do you hope to be in five years’ time?FF: My dream would be to direct a film. BAFTA-nominated animator Honor Price has directed a&nbsp;stop-motion epic for two songs from the Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men's comeback album.Price's nine-minute film was created for the two-part album sequence The Block and Mouse Parade from All Is Love and Pain in the Mouse Parade, released last October.The film unfolds as two parallel narratives occupying the same space. Above ground, a solitary mouse-like figure runs endlessly in a cage before tumbling into a vast wilderness. What follows is a relentless climb up a mountainous rock face; a physical and emotional ascent marked by isolation and strain.[imgtoken data:1]As the track transitions into Mouse Parade, the camera descends beneath the floorboards into a hidden underground city. Where the figure above is disconnected and alone, this subterranean community moves as one - tightly bound, resilient, and interdependent.Honor Price says that she was drawn to the emotional duality in the songs. “I was thrilled to create this two-part film for Of Monsters and Men - building two parallel worlds through stop motion, puppetry, and layered multiplane sets."Rendered in tactile stop-motion, the film leans into texture, scale, and atmosphere. Humans appear strangely mouse-like, while the puppeted mice feel deeply human, subtly inverting perspective. The result is eerie, intimate and quietly devastating - a meditation on isolation, belonging and the fragile light we carry for one another.“We were excited to make the bulk of the entire video by hand using traditional handcrafted animation methods," says Price. "Specifically stop-motion, puppetry, and multiplane. To work with shadows as a character was something that I have been studying for years now and trying to make it work in couple of my past videos, but this time I think I finally made it work."Inada reveals that weather conditions whilst shooting in the desert meant what was planned as VFX was actuallyt achieved in-camera.[imgtoken data:2]"I wrote on the treatment a sandstorm that was supposed to happen in VFX, but on the day of the shoot a real sandstorm started to happen in front of our eyes," he reveals."It was crazy, everything started flying around, there was sand in our eyes, but Pierre [de Kerchove, DOP]&nbsp;kept shooting through the sandstorm. Some of the shots you can see on the video the sky is pretty foggy you barely can see the city behind. That was real."Of course we had a crazy VFX post from Ryan [Dylan Selkirk] and his team as well on the sandstorm of the video. Shout out to all my collaborators that made this video come to life. Pierre&nbsp;did an amazing job, Side-Eye smashed it on the post, as well as Aaron Saiki on the edit and Daniel de Vue on the grading."Last but not least, the production team that supported me from the start Maurizio Von Trapp and Pegah [Farahmand]. This was a crazy ambitious idea and I am really glad it got made."&nbsp;

Lyrically it's in the same spirit of his work with Black Midi, whilst taking a slight change of direction musically - which is&nbsp;still very intense. This&nbsp;sounds a bit like Steely Dan on steroids.But putting himself front and centre in the video is certainly new and Geordie is very well served by Ethan &amp; Tom with this video. Each scene from one is mirrored in the other, where the animation style and narrative structure remains a constant, but some of the content and the colour palette differs. Look no further than this outstanding piece by director Kelzang Revach at Paris-based studio&nbsp;Temple Caché for electronic duo&nbsp;Chien Méchant.The video for&nbsp;Étiole Filante is an intense&nbsp;and gobsmakingly gorgeous re-imagining of a early 80s teen monster movie in which the gender-fluid lead characters, Joh-Ane and Barbarella, meet for a disco date on a moonlit night - and then Barbarella reveals her true identity...&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]The vision is based on numerous references from movies of the time - some of which are clearly visible as the narrative unfolds at breathless pace. The team have used tradition techniques&nbsp;- mashup video, rotoscopy, animated 2D painting, 3D modelisation - which have then been turbocharged by the addition of&nbsp;AI animation."This decision to set the story in this context appeared early in our dialogue with Chien Méchant," says&nbsp;Kelzang Revach.&nbsp;"Along with it came all the pop and colorful intensity, superficiality and clichés contained within TV shows about highschool sweethearts.[imgtoken data:2]"What inspires me the most in this style exercise is revisiting these same cultural codes that made our adolescence. It’s a fine line to walk.
