Novelist is unphased by the drama circling around him, in Ehsan's fiery promo for Calm.&nbsp;Shot last year and released to coincide with&nbsp;the grime star's 24th birthday, the hypnotic visual uses&nbsp;burning film overlays and erratic editing to convey a growing sense of drama and suspense as Novelist casually walks the nighttime streets of London.&nbsp;Ehsan intercuts Novelist's unruffled presence with cutaways of curious, and increasingly anxious bystanders, aware that something big is about to ignite.&nbsp;It's a mesmerising visual, elevated by the artist's confident performance, DoP&nbsp;James Henry's camerawork, and Ehsan's fusion of gritty reality with otherworldly elements.&nbsp;A very different beast to&nbsp;the director's comedic video for&nbsp;Unknown P's Piers Morgan, released late&nbsp;last last year, but just as impressive.

Zhang + Knight direct an ethereal promo for London Grammar's Lose Your Head.&nbsp;In the studio-set video,&nbsp;we see vocalist&nbsp;Hannah Reid on a sinking ship, as she hears the siren song of the&nbsp;sea - created from a giant piece of silk-like fabric -&nbsp;beneath her. She leaves her comfort zone behind,&nbsp;walking among the waves and eventually sinking into their embrace.The pastel-washed colour scheme&nbsp;and minimalist design - reprised from the directing duo's acclaimed videos for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/10/29/eden-projector-zhang-knight/61573" target="_blank">Eden</a> and <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/08/25/meryem-aboulouafa-deeply-zhang-knight/66201" target="_blank">Meryem Aboulouafa</a> - are anchored by a mesmerising&nbsp;performance from Reid, who thrives in the soft surreality&nbsp;of the concept.&nbsp;

After making the&nbsp;era-defining This Is America,&nbsp;Hiro Murai's next music video project&nbsp;was always going to be a big deal. And this does not disappoint. Murai's collaboration with FKA Twigs is an&nbsp;action-packed epic affair, embracing Chinese martial arts. It is a brilliant, and beautiful - and brutal - showcase for the artist's unique talents.In characteristic&nbsp;Murai style, and with the help of regular collaborators like DoP Larkin Sieple and colourist Ricky Gausis, the grittily mundane is transformed into something breathtaking. As with so many of his music videos, this is shot entirely at night and again Murai shows his mastery of the specific atmosphere that night creates in the quieter parts of a cityscape. And in this case, the city is London.In a late night café, Twigs encounters a male alter-ego (played by Teake), and their assignation quickly becomes violent. A terrifying swordfight begins within the cafe, with Twigs' and her rival's athleticism taking them headlong through its shopfront window. Then&nbsp;their fight moves across quiet suburban streets, via the&nbsp;swooping, sensual movements of Wushu martial arts - so the conflict begins to hint&nbsp;at a complex backstory to their relationship/rivalry.&nbsp;But within the café again, at close quarters it gets brutal again and there is an extraordinary&nbsp;outcome - arguably not for the fainthearted.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]This climactic moment, where Twigs is divided by a samurai sword, is the most obvious contribution of VFX in a piece which, as with much of Murai's work, employs extensive VFX without drawing huge attention to itself. He worked in close collaboration with a team at MPC in Los Angeles to create those crucial sequences. Not only the&nbsp;choreographed fight sequence across buildings, epic smashes through shop windows, and that dramatic final scene,&nbsp;but digital matte painting was also used throughout to enhance the gritty backdrops. &nbsp;The result is a majestic piece of work, a reminder of Murai's phenomenal body of work in the medium.&nbsp;The same applies to Twigs. It is further evidence that she is a great action hero(ine)&nbsp;in the making.

Dan from Bastille battles the outside world in Another Place, directed by&nbsp;Anna Radchenko &amp; Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux.&nbsp;In an avant-garde bedroom set, Dan is sat with sand pouring from his hands, lonely and isolated. The huge windows behind him offer a glimpse into the outside world, but he isn't interested. Alessia appears outside, like&nbsp;a giant looking through a dollhouse, and taps the glass. This sends a shockwave through the environment, which starts to deteriorate and spill black blood from its walls. Dan is thrown into action, trying to keep a sense of calm whilst the outside world is trying to break him out of his bubble.&nbsp;Unique and inspired, the German Expressionist references and design elevate the concept, and Dan's&nbsp;performance as a man losing his sanctuary is breathtaking.Great work across the board on the video shot in Toronto, with the heavily pregnant Radchenko directing remotely&nbsp;from London, and&nbsp;Schaulin-Rioux on set.&nbsp;

What if the moment before you die, instead of watching your life flash before your eyes, you&#39;re instead given the chance to re-experience any moment you&#39;ve ever had? Which would you choose?That&#39;s the premise of Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux&#39;s gripping video for Tom Walker, as we join the singer-songwriter and his fellow doomed passengers on a stricken aircraft. That when the passengers&#39; entertainment screens start to become divine portals allowing their users to look back on the lives. It&#39;s ingenious, thought-provoking and, with very concise storytelling, it&#39;s superbly executed.This could have made a memorable half hour&nbsp;episode of The Twilight Zone&nbsp;but&nbsp;Schaulin-Rioux&#39;s&nbsp;makes it work in four minutes.&nbsp;

From Stormzy&#39;s incorrigible charisma, leading 350 young fans in a singalong, to the portraits of British households in their diversity, to the incredibly moving shared moment of silence, in memory of victims of tragedy, Nez Khammal has created a remarkable visual poem to life in London in 2017.Blurring the boundaries between music video and documentary, and deconstructing the music video process along the way, Nez&#39;s video for Blinded By Your Grace Pt 2 is a celebration of community, and the wealth of culture and beliefs that make up a city like London.It&#39;s an emotional experience, for reasons that are, in very&nbsp;British fashion,&nbsp;never explicitly referred to, but will be obvious to nearly&nbsp;everybody. Nearly six months after the Grenfell Tower tragedy, Nez and Stormzy have made something that looks back and forward, and allows the viewer to experience a little joy, sadness - and hope. A late contender for one of the videos of the year.&nbsp;

Now this is what we like to see. Scott Cudmore creates an intense, joyous, and eccentric video for Leslie Feist that feels like a return to the form of the singer&#39;s videos of a decade or so ago. With added Jarvis Cocker.Feist&#39;s videos for 1,2,3,4, My Moon My Man, and others directed by Patrick Daughters&nbsp;are ten years old now - from another era almost &ndash;&nbsp;but they helped introduce more contemporary dance styles into music videos. Cudmore&#39;s video for Century follows that tradition, but there&#39;s also another level of gritty seriousness, to reflect the current age.Feist is confronted by her opponent and alter-ego, in the shape of singer and actress Maria Doyle Kennedy, and each of the dancers in Feist&#39;s gang has their equivalent in Kennedy&#39;s. They square up to each other, under a freeway flyover, and then engage in a dance battle -&nbsp;choreographed by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No%C3%A9mie_Lafrance" target="_blank">Noemie Lafrance</a>.Century reflects our harsh, combative society, damaged by social media abuse - but it&#39;s not all intense grimness. The iconoclastic mischievousness is encapsulated by the sudden and incongruous&nbsp;appearance of Jarvis Cocker in the final act, intoning about more important matters, in his trademark fashion. What an experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Floating women, crucifixes and brutalism - there&#39;s a rich tapestry of imagery in Pedro Martin-Calero&#39;s newest clip for The Weeknd.Martin-Calero&#39;s awesome minimalist visual sees The Weeknd and another man vie for the affections of the same woman as they all make their way through a huge, beautiful maze-like building. With deep blood-red decor cutting through the space, a series of silent observers, distorted mirrors and geometric shapes the clip has an almost Kubrickian sense of dread to it. No wonder some excitable commenters are seeing this as some kind of evidence&nbsp;of The Weeknd&#39;s affiliation with &#39;The Illuminati&#39;.

Michael LeBlanc&#39;s huge ensemble dance video for Wintersleep sees a man search for a break from loneliness in a place so many do: the bingo hall.Set in a small Canadian town seemingly at the end of the world, we follow an isolated man as he dances his way through Twin Peaks-style surreality both inside and outside. Impressive large-scale shots of a populated street and a bizarre golden dance routine in a local bingo hall make the video visually intriguing. Not to mention the great big foreboding moon in the sky at the start of the clip.

Sammy Rawal&#39;s second video for the Canadian pop-electronica artist Hannah Georgas expands upon his first for Don&#39;t Go&nbsp;a few months ago&nbsp;in using gif-like repetition to emphasise the rhythms of the track Evelyn.This is also more design-orientated and certainly more colourful that <a href="http://www.believemedia.com/work/sammy-rawal-hannah-georgas-dont-go/" target="_blank">its dark and brooding predecessor</a>, the repetition extended to Georgas herself, with multiple versions of her lounging and walking&nbsp;around a brutalist urban space. But Rawal doesn&#39;t get bogged down in repetition for its own sake either, and also provides a kind of intermission from the main theme, having Georgas emerge, angel-like, from fluffy white clouds.

Charlie Tyrell has directed this&nbsp;video for&nbsp;Keita Juma&#39;s track Belly, with an&nbsp;animated photo collage technique inspired by David Hockney.To pull it off, he&nbsp;converted video from around 13 DSLR cameras&nbsp;to still image sequences and printed out each individual frame, resulting in five thousand printed photos which were then animated by hand. A mammoth job, but the result is an interesting,&nbsp;shapeshifting take on a&nbsp;performance video.
