Filmed for an episode of&nbsp;The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in late January, Samuel Taylor captures this riveting performance by Fontaines D.C., performing the title track of the Grammy-nominated A Hero's Death&nbsp;in the Auld Shillelagh pub in Stoke Newington, London.In Sam Taylor's words it's "one of the thinnest pubs in London town", which DoP Eira Wyn Jones has lit beautifully, colour-coding different parts of the room.&nbsp;Kudos to Steadicam op Jake Whitehouse too, for negotiating this tricky space - moving up and down the length of the pub through the band and Guinness-supping regulars - to capture&nbsp;the live version in one hypnotic take.Unfortunately, it's the closest to the inside of a pub that you will get this weekend. Cheers anyway.

TV Priest take on the role&nbsp;of shady 20th-century business execs in Joe Wheatley's mesmerising promo for Press Gang.Dissecting the media's omnipresent role in world events, and the changing tides of the news cycle and dissemination of information, the enigmatic video takes place in an unspecified&nbsp;past, reeking of late industrialisation and analogue technology. Frontman Charlie Drinkwater -&nbsp;playing both pinstriped boss of a cavernous factory, and TV director barking orders in a vintage control room - exudes macho strength&nbsp;at first, even gangster-like threat. But then the facade is stripped away, as Drinkwater's businessman character is pursued by unseen forces.Switching between abstract narrative segments and calm, quirky portraits, the video is infused with a sense of dark humour and parody, whilst turning a critical eye on the world's news media. This is delivered with an anachronistic, vintage aesthetic, achieved through the use of 16mm film and retro styling.DoP Rik Burnell&nbsp;creates a frenetic yet balanced energy, switching between static shots and&nbsp;no-holds-barred, jerky&nbsp;camerawork.&nbsp;Meanwhile the band's modern day performance is delivered through the tiny monitors of the 70s-era TV control desk. A brilliantly executed promo with style and attitude to boot.&nbsp;

Tom Haines embraces the echoes left behind by nightlife culture, in his passionate promo for Camelphat's Easier.&nbsp;Haines reimagines the past barren year of club culture, the ghostly reminders of what&nbsp;life was like just over ten months ago, with the help of regular collaborator, DoP Steve Annis. They pull together a more optimistic perspective as we weave in and out of&nbsp;outlandish, no-holds-barred dance spectacles.&nbsp;It begins with the lead character engaging with the technology that makes the clubbing experience so special and otherworldly, and soon there is a vibrant&nbsp;display of lasers, haze and remote heads, encapsulating the hypnotic, hyperactive energy of the dancefloor - just like the good old days.

Brock Neal Roberts directs a tender, introspective promo for Arlo Parks' Caroline.&nbsp;Recounting the story of a couple trying - and failing - to make each other happy, Parks is a spectator in this concept, watching and empathising as a&nbsp;torrent of emotions weigh heavily overhead.&nbsp;The video has a gentle, authentic aesthetic, similar to Roberts' UKMVA-winning promo for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/07/27/berwyn-trap-phone-brock-neal-roberts/65800">Berwyn's Trap Phone</a>. Jeshi bears witness to a dystopian, ruckus hell of a London pub toilet before he burns it to the ground, in Brock Neal Roberts' promo for Looks Like Trouble.&nbsp;The familiar yet nightmarish location is a stylised, often grimy backdrop to the frenetic action, as Jeshi is pulled through a flurry of menacing&nbsp;scenarios. Mirrors shatter, freeze-frame fight scenes materialise in the shadows, and Jeshi's head protrudes from a toilet bowl...&nbsp;The trippy aesthetic is elevated by DoP&nbsp;Nick Morris'&nbsp;striking cinematography, with strobing lights and an abundant use of AR rig movements to reflect the artist quite literally spinning out of control.A nightmarishly welcoming sight of a pub toilet where love, drugs and violence all live side by side.

Rob Akin directs an impressively punchy promo for Rachel&nbsp;Chinouriri's Give Me A Reason.&nbsp;Jumping between striking performance setups and a mysterious narrative between a woman and her lover, the visual perfectly encapsulates the abstract soundscapes present in the track.&nbsp;DoP&nbsp;Alana Mejia Gonzalez contrasts crisp blue colour palettes with warm reds and monochromatic snapshots,&nbsp;resulting in a stunning tapestry of performance and storytelling."Give Me a Reason&nbsp;is a video driven by photography-inspired portraiture of Rachel performing the song in elaborate monochromatic scenes and a surreal narrative between a woman and her lover," Akin explains. "These surreal narrative moments are ambiguous in nature, but reminiscent of the feelings that are found in the lyrics of indecisiveness and separation."

Jordan Stephens, once of Rizzle Kicks, plays Tiger, the inveterate stoner who finds himself on a weird, weed-related voyage of discovery in Jamie Whitby's marvellous short film to celebrate the 25th anniversary of a landmark Warp Records release - Nightmares On Wax's Smokers Delight.&nbsp;When Tiger discovers he has been locked out of his flat&nbsp;after a night of serious toking with his mates, it triggers a series of increasingly outlandish&nbsp;episodes - which moves from stoner-noir to full-on acid trip when our hero tumbles into full 2D animation.Music from Nightmare On Wax's classic 1995 album is an unobtrusive motif throughout the film, written as well as directed by Whitby. It is something of a departure&nbsp;from his largely conceptual work in music videos, but it shows that comedy-drama, mixed with a splash of pure surrealism, is his forté. He gets great performances from a talented cast, led by Stephens - possibly channelling Jeff Bridges&nbsp;in Lebowski - and has been rewarded with a nomination at this year's UKMVAs, in the&nbsp;Best Special Video Projects category, for his efforts.

Brock Neal Roberts directs an emotionally affecting video for Berwyn's Trap Phone.&nbsp;The song is about two individuals, one inside the bubble and one outside of it, and the trap phone is the only point of contact between the two.&nbsp;Exploring this&nbsp;idea of distant love, the concept shows the artist spending a lot of time making one-way calls, reaching out to someone who won't reciprocate the contact. In a haze of everyday moments spent with friends, the loss&nbsp;of&nbsp;this relationship becomes existential, questioning what love and life is from a human perspective.A rap break at the half-way mark adds a poignancy to the project, and the unbroken, almost one-minute long shot that complements this section is incredibly powerful.&nbsp;With a distinct visual style and otherwordly aesthetic - care of DoP&nbsp;Spike Morris - the video is a beautiful interpretation of the lyrics.&nbsp;Trap Phone was shot all over Romford with Berwyn's friends and at places that hold a special significance for the artist.&nbsp;

Little Mix are brought to life in a stop-motion fuzzy-felt wonderland,&nbsp;in Zac Ella's 80s-tinged video for Break Up Song.&nbsp;After being forced to pull the plug on the live action version of the video the night before the shoot - due to the looming lockdown- Zac wasn't quite ready to give up on the concept just yet.&nbsp;And thank God he didn't. The ensuing video is a testament to creativity and ingenuity, featuring bold, vibrant animation - delivered in stop-frame fuzzy-felt animation&nbsp;- and some of the best self-filmed performances from the lockdown so far.&nbsp;Felt animator&nbsp;Lawrence Becker gives the project a unique flair, diving head-first into challenging transitions and movements, whilst ensuring to keep things&nbsp;glossy and pop. Aneil Karia directs a harrowing narrative set in a dystopian&nbsp;Britain, for Riz Ahmed's The Long Goodbye.&nbsp;Taking place&nbsp;in a nondescript town in Surrey, we are introduced to a British South Asian family in a bustling household- one son is trying to teach his Dad -played by Ahmed- dance moves, whilst the other is cosied up on the sofa with his girlfriend, playing games and chilling out. Several other family members are spotted around the house, with a group of girls getting ready upstairs, and the grandfather&nbsp;trying his best to catch the news on the TV, amongst the flurry of activity.&nbsp;In the midst of the chaos, we see moments that are universally relatable -&nbsp;trying to manage different family members and their short tempers, moving furniture around to accommodate more people for a party. Small snapshots of everyday life to paint a picture of the family dynamic. Having stumbled around with an old chair for several minutes, to the dismay of several family members, Ahmed sets it down in a cramped room, before noticing an alarming scene unfolding across the road.&nbsp;In broad daylight, a group of white men in black uniforms are forceably removing people from their homes. The tone of the video shifts as Ahmed screams for everyone to run for cover, exclaiming "This is it. It's happening now". The uniformed gang catch up to Ahmed and his loved ones, in a truly haunting third-act.This near-future dystopia is conceptualised brilliantly by director&nbsp;Aneil Karia, <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/07/24/kano-trouble-aneil-karia/59936">who won an MVA last year for his collaboration with Kano</a>, and is known for his work on TV series such as Top Boy. Uncomfortable and confrontational, this isn't an overly exaggerated narrative with tonnes of creative license. This is one or two missteps into the future, the potential result of the current political climate and events such as the ongoing Windrush scandal. The surreal&nbsp;transition from happy family&nbsp;to mindless murder on the street is made only more harrowing given its basis in reality.&nbsp;DoP&nbsp;Stuart Bentley creates an authentic aesthetic through the use of natural daylight and documentary-style camera movement, succinctly&nbsp;matching the tone of the project. This is a concept very much based in the real world, and Bentley ensures the cinematography is as unobtrusive as possible.&nbsp;Karia is an exceptional talent bringing important stories to the forefront, and a perfect match to such a visceral concept and track. A one-take monologue at the end of the video depicts Ahmed rising with a newfound strength, confronting the camera directly with the deplorable reality that is staring us all in the face:&nbsp;“Don’t question us about our loyalty, our blood and sweat’s enough / Born under a sun that you made too hot for us / Kidnapped by Empire and diaspora fostered us.”• Behind The Scenes feature on The Long Goodbye on <a href="https://wepresent.wetransfer.com/story/riz-ahmed-the-long-goodbye/" target="_blank">WePresent</a>
