Cheryl 'Love Made Me Do It' by Sophie Muller
David Knight - 12th Nov 2018
Sophie Muller's first video since signing to Prettybird sees her making her third video for the now singularly-named Cheryl. And as well as the name reduction, it's also a Cheryl as we've never seen her before.
That's making the video a magnet for debate about whether or not Cheryl has had facial surgery, and a bigger one about the pressure on our pop stars to stay young-looking. But in fact, the video is something of a triumph on its own terms. After you watch it once, you can focus on the more important stuff, and appreciate the fact that Sophie Muller has done it again.
This is a very slick pop product that ticks the boxes. It sees Muller reunited with one of the old school great DoPs, Dan Landin, and the use of art direction, lighting and choreography is top notch, with something of a 90s flavour, updated for 2018. But at the heart, Cheryl herself gives a performance of comeback single Love Made Me Do It that that adds personality, warmth and humour to the singing-and-dancing stuff. It seems to be saying: 'this is just all a bit of fun, isn't it?'.
Good for you, Cheryl.
