newsUK Music Video Awards 2014: Hiro Murai wins Best Director, DANIELS take Video Of The Year, Joseph Kahn accepts Icon Award American director Hiro Murai (above) picked up the Best Director award at the UK Music Video Awards 2014 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London last night (November 10th), directing duo DANIELS accepted the Video Of The Year award for DJ Snake's Turn Down For What with a hilarious 'thanks for this award' video, and a stunned Joseph Kahn accepted the MVAs' annual Icon Award, at the seventh running of the annual ceremony celebrating the most creative work and greatest achievements in music video of the past year. On a night of thrills and emotion, hosted once again by comedian Adam Buxton, Amber Millington from Agile Films took the Best Producer prize, French directing duo Truman & Cooper won Best New Director, Caroline Clayton won the Best Commissioner award, FKA Twigs was the winner of the MVAs' first ever Video Artist Award, and Sony Music was the label with most wins, with five of their videos winning honours. The Daniel Wolfe-directed video for Paolo Nutini's Iron Sky won two awards, for Best Pop Video UK - accepted by the video's producer Lee Groombridge, commissioner Dan Curwin, and Somesuch's Tim Nash and Tash Tan – and Best Cinematography In A Video - accepted by the video's DoP Robbie Ryan. Canadian director Emily Kai Bock collected the MVA for Best Alternative Video - International for her video for Arcade Fire's After Life, and then gave an impromptu speech, and gained a rapturous reception from the audience, arguing that music videos should be seen more widely at their best - on the big screen.Émile Sornin collected the award for video for Best Dance UK for Disclosure's Grab Her, with Helmi, another director at Paris production company Division, accepting the Best Urban Budget video for his video for Bonnie Banane. Dan Sherwin was the popular winner of the coveted Best Editing In A Video award - the second time he's won the prize – for his work on the Tom Haines-directed video for Jon Hopkins' Collider, Supple Nam was the similarly popular winner of the Best Choreography award for his work on the Ninian Doff-directed video for Peace's Money, and the team at Electric Theatre Collective won the Best VFX prize for Alt-J's Hunger Of The Pines. George K at MPC won the Best Colour Grade in a Video award for Paloma Faith's Can't Rely On You.Director Rémy Cayuela and Virgin EMI commissioner James Hackett accepted the single public-voted award on the night, the Vevo Must See Award, for the video for Wilkinson's Afterglow. There were messages of thanks from Sia (with back to camera) and Daniel Askill, co-directors of the video for Sia's Chandelier, which won Best Pop Video - International, and Damien Kulash Jr from OK Go, whose video for Writing's On The Wall won Best Art Direction & Design In A Video. Sam Pilling, the first British director to win an award at the MVAs for a video in an international category, also send a message on winning Best Urban International for J Cole's She Knows.FKA Twigs also sent a message on winning the first Best Video Artist Award at the MVAs. Her video for Papi Pacify, co-directed by herself and Tom Beard, won Best Alternative Video Budget. And Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue joined colleagues, friends and family to send messages of congratulations to Joseph Kahn, the recipient of the Icon Award at the UKMVAs14, in a video that celebrated his achievements in a twenty year career as a music video director.Joseph had begun the day as the keynote speaker at the first MusicVidFest conference at the BFI Southbank, and discovered that his new video for Taylor Swift had been leaked onto the internet one day earliery than its planned release. But the Icon Award honour came as a complete surprise to the director of videos for Eminem, Britney Spears, Wu-Tang Clan, Muse, Chemical Brothers and many more.Vania Heymann was another director who travelled across the Atlantic to pick up an award - the New York-based Israeli director won Best Interactive Video for Bob Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone. Other winners included Nicos Livesey and Tom Bunker, directors of the embroidered animation video for Throne's Tharsis Sleeps, that won Best Rock/Indie UK, Andrew Thomas Huang winning Best Alternative UK for Atoms For Peace's Before Your Very Eyes and Craig Moore winning Best Dance Budget for Friend Within's Renegade. But on a night when the music video production community from London were joined by a boisterous contingent of music video makers from Paris, directors and producers from the US and Scandinavia, and provided an electric atmosphere in the auditorium all night long, arguably the highlight of the evening was the video message sent to the MVAs by LA-based directing duo DANIELS - Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert - on winning the Video of the Year award. They recreated the chaotic, destructive elements of their video for DJ Snake & Lil Jon's Turn Down For What in their acceptance video - but with an added British flavour, with Daniel Scheinert doing particular damage to a packet of McVities Digestive biscuits. And an evening where the lighthearted but celebratory tone was set from the start with a hilarous opening routine by host Adam Buxton, finished with Hiro Murai, already a winner of the Best Rock Indie Video International for Queens Of The Stone Age's Smooth Sailing, winning the award for Best Director for his exceptional body of work over the past year.A special programme focusing on the night's winners and nominees will be broadcast on 4Music during the week of November 22.UK MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS 2014 -
