Matt Lambert directs a short documentary film for Jimmy Somerville's groundbreaking 80s band Bronski Beat. The 40th anniversary short is a reimagining of enduring LGBTQ+ anthem Why, originally released in 1984. Using personal and archival footage, Lambert crafts a powerful story of resilience, community, and solidarity to pay tribute to those who speak up and put themselves on the line for the sake of love - those on the frontlines often being the most at risk.Using vibrant titles to guide and inform the viewer, the contrast of vintage and contemporary footage reflects the considerable timeline between the original release and today, cementing both the progress and difficulties that are still present. Using textural overlays and graphical elements to transition from vignette to vignette, it's a singular - and important - piece of work, and is absolutely absorbing.“Jimmy wanted to commission me to make a project that spoke to the climate of LGBTQ+ rights today,” explains Lambert. “I ended up exploring archives from past and present, material from my phone and friends — self-shot material from the community — which became a documentary short film. We had access to Bronski Beat's original stems to sculpt the timeless and still timely score to this film.“It was such a dream to look into the past and future with Jimmy,” says Lambert. “This project was born out of an ongoing dialogue about the past and our ongoing responsibilities to protect what we’ve fought so hard for."We are grateful to have the support of Stonewall UK in a final call to action at the end of the film, so viewers have a resource to go to for help, guidance, and more information on LGBTQ+ rights."

Vic Lentaigne combines a supercool nightclub scenario with heartwarming romance starring Maisie Williams, for Romy's fabulous She's On My Mind. The video begins with Romy performing the track among the throng on a crowded dancefloor, as a group of partygoers enter the club - and then flashes back in time to the build-up to this big night out, and how Maisie's character falls for another girl in the group, and their tentative moves to connect. It all builds to a moment and big emotional rush as the pair finally get together on the dancefloor. Vic Lentaigne, Romy's wife and creative director, weaves a sweet and believable falling-in-love narrative into a neon-hued disco aesthetic with a super-hip cast of clubbers.Great work from all the cast, as well as Maisie Williams - and that means that all Romy does is perform this absolute banger of a track.

SOMOH is a master of disguise in Andy Little's touching promo for Man, set in a fancy dress store. The video sees bedrooom pop artist Sophia Mohan - aka SOMOH - don a number of different outfits, some traditionally masculine and manly, to capture the themes of the track. The offbeat fashion and stylistic choices act as an armour of sorts, to try and blend in to the world at large, even when you shouldn't have to be doing so. "Man was written out of the jealousy I felt towards heterosexual couples able to display their love in public," the artist explains of the track. "I’ve experienced so many moments in my relationship where I haven’t felt comfortable or safe enough to be affectionate with my partner. I wanted this song to capture the desperation of wishing I didn’t have to hide that part of myself so much."Whilst playful in its execution, the video tackles the frustrations of the double standards that persist in traditional relationships as opposed to LGBTQ+ relationships, and it's a real knockout introduction to the artist for those who aren't familiar yet.

Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard direct a mesmerizing promo for Anohni & The Johnsons, starring English model and activist Munroe Bergdorf. The video for It Must Change features Munroe Bergdorf as ANOHNI's stand-in, who mimes the words with passion and intention, delivering a truly stunning performance. Forsyth and Pollard's multidisciplinary art backgrounds are on show here too, with inspired graphics and text interwoven into cutaway vignettes, giving the video a sense of place among a much wider conversation. It's a brilliantly achieved vision, which delivers in every aspect across the board. “Anohni is a visionary artist who speaks with compassion and intellect, from a place of experience," say directors Forsyth and Pollard. "Bringing one of the most important voices of our time to life on screen has been both daunting and exhilarating."Munroe is the perfect conduit - not only for Anohni's voice, but for her message. It Must Change is a clarion call, pleading with us all to act on the urgent need for positive change in the way we live with one another and on this planet we call home.”

Pip + Lib direct a heartwrenching promo for JGrrey, featuring Kojey Radical. The track is a tribute to the artist's best friend James, who sadly lost his battle with depression, and marks the first collaboration between JGrrey and Kojey Radical, having known each other for a decade. The video for May depicts a support group which descends into chaos and violence, via an outpour of complex emotions and the fear of being truthful with oneself. "From the moment we received our first voicenote from Jen [JGrrey], we knew this was gonna be a special project," say Pip + Lib. "We then met up around Jen's kitchen table, and between us sort of birthed this safe space for ideas, thoughts and creativity."Jen handed their vision over to us, and we cradled it from their brain and out into the world. Trust is one thing all directors, creatives, and basically everyone wants when working on something, and we were so thankful to have that in mountain loads."The respect for our ideas and new paths was rare and beautiful. On the shoot day, a community of queer creatives came together, to create for a queer artist. A bliss, sacred space. In so many words. It was special. And we hope for it to be the beginning of something more!"

Jordan Rossi directs an empassioned promo for South African singer-songwriter, actor and novelist Nakhane, featuring Perfume Genius, with a work that takes its cue from some pillars of Queer cinema and art. The video for Do You Well begins with Nakhane and their love interest glistening under sparkling lights in a studio space, and then battling to create a common ground, before finally connecting with each other. Gorgeous and thrilling, the video visualises a complex set of emotions in a stylish and thought-provoking manner, and the end result is wonderfully alluring. "Nakhane already had a concept for this video," Rossi reveals. "It was very much centred around a wrestling encounter between two people in a homoerotic fashion. They wanted to express the idea of a duel and the ridiculous nature of aggressive masculinity."Nakhane and I drew inspiration from lots of Queer art and cinema such as Pink Narcissus by James Bidgood, Querelle by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Moonlight by Barry Jenkins and Sebastien by Derek Jarman. We also looked at features like Fight Club and Shame - both dealing with masculinity, sex and relationships in a unique manner."Visually, I wanted a really deep and textured image with lots of energy. Tony Scott's turbulent yet cinematically rich style of compressed imagery was a huge source of inspiration here. "It's not every day you get to make projects such as this so a huge shout out goes to Faye who commissioned it, the record label for giving us complete creative freedom and Nakhane for being such a trusting collaborator."

Floria Sigismondi returns to music videos with a theatrical blockbuster for Sam Smith's chart-topping Unholy, featuring Kim Petras.Shot in London, this eye-popping extravaganza is a musical set-piece packed with flair, pizzazz and sexual energy - with Sam as the charismatic MC of a small army of show-people at The Body Shop, the LGBTQ+ cabaret where lustful dreams come true. With cameos by Gottmik and Violet Chachki from RuPaul's Drag Race, and porn star Paddy O'Brian, the film follows a husband who ducks out on his wife and sneaks off to his favorite sex club cabaret, where he soon finds his guilty pleasures revealed in a very public manner. After discovering her husband’s unfaithful ways, the film concludes with the wife character becoming liberated by her own sexuality, rather than a victim to the scandal.A modern retelling of the spectacle of cabaret, Sigismondi has drawn upon her upbringing for this - she was born to Italian opera singer parents, and grew up amid the theatrical and the avant-garde - and applied her trademark cinematic style previously seen in her award-winning work for the likes of Gucci, Rihanna, David Bowie, and Justin Timberlake.Choreographed by French dance collective (LA)HORDE, who are famed for their ability to develop scenarios and actions that take up radically contemporary themes and questions, the seductive music video is a visual feast led by a diverse and queer cast. With references to French surrealist photographer Claude Cahun and noted corset maker of the late 20th Century, Mr. Pearl, the video’s costume designer Lisa Jarvis created an impressive range of otherworldly looks for the enormous ensemble, who were cast by Hannah Ashby Ward at Lane Casting (an LGBTQ+ owned company) to showcase real, diverse and unapologetic bodies. Floria Sigismondi, Director, comments: “I grew up in the world of theatre and opera. This film presented the platform for me to reach deep into that history. It was important to me to bring the theatrics and drama to the film while also giving it a modern feel. We were not interested in creating a period piece. We wanted to create our own world. The theatre and setting gave us the history of cabaret but the costumes broadened that and injected a modern element. For me it's a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and creating that celebration was the most important and joyous experience."Jannie McInnes, Executive Producer at Scheme Engine, adds: “The creative excellence and expression across departments on this project completely blew my mind. Floria sets a high bar, inspires people to bring their most creative selves and she wants everyone to have fun doing it. We are really grateful to Sam and the label for affording us the luxury of real prep time and we used every second of it!”Lisa Jarvis, Wardrobe Stylist, continues: “I've been a fan of Floria's work for quite a while, and as soon as I saw the mood board and heard A Clockwork Orange, Claude Cahun, Mr. Pearl, Crazy Horse, I knew it was right up my alley and would be hella fun to dive into. Taking the references in mind, I wanted to create a world where there was a huge range of visual looks and everyone embraced them. It needed to be otherworldly, opulent, sensual, and a little bit intoxicating to watch with more than a strong twist of naughty.”

Luis Hindman directs promo full of yearning for Joesef - set on two different crowded dancefloors.Following previous collaboration for It's Been A Little Heavy Lately, the video for East End Coast sees Joesef drifting through an atmospheric club packed with a mixed crowd of revellers and kissing couples. He is seemingly the only one alone among this hipster crowd, reflective and lipsyncing to the melodic song. The fact that he is pining from a lost love from his hometown of Glasgow is brought home by the introduction of another, slightly less crowded dancefloor, of a gay club - this one distinguished from the other also by the blueish tinge in the grade and a different aspect ratio - with Joesef himself in a smooch with a boy. It's an evocative display of love and loss, told through an atmospheric and hyperreal aesthetic, beautifully shot by Sam Meyer. Joesef also gives an excellent downbeat performance amid the fevered atmosphere of the London club, and Luis Hindman handles this tricky juxtaposition of the two settings, to bring out the emotion of the song, really well. Joesef told Attitude Magazine that the video was very important to him. "If I'd seen a wee guy from the east of Glasgow necking a lad in a music video back in the day I'd have felt a bit less alone."

Sam Smith reunites with Luke Monaghan in a triumphant comeback for Love Me More. The song is all about the singer being more comfortable in their self, and Monaghan - who has directed more Sam Smith videos than anyone else - allows that feeling to seep through the course of the film in both a direct and evocative fashion. After a prelude listening to a phone machine voice message from an old friend who craves to meet up with them, Sam heads out into the day with a spring in their step - in a street scene reminiscent of one of their early videos. The introduction of a supporting cast is done through a break from the course of the narrative - conceptual set-ups and portrait shots of Sam's 'gang' from the LGBTQ+ community - before they all come together on the dancefloor.Monaghan keeps things interesting and affectionate throughout, never deviating from a positive and joyous mood. That's anchored by Sam's radiant performance. This dovetails really nicely with a song which has a tinge of gospel revivalism about it.Sam Smith is definitely back - and so is Luke Monaghan.

Elderbrook's cinematic track Broken Mirror becomes the vehicle for an authentic story, showcasing the issues facing many Queer people in 2021, helmed by director/photographer Jordan Rossi in collaboration with multi-disciplinary artist and creator Darkwah.Rossi's film follows a day in the life of a Queer performer played by Darkwah, and the reality of their experience, including the aggressions and microaggressions that impact personal safety and mental health. Together with a gut-wrenching sequence where Darkwah is cornered by a homophobic mob, there is also a focus upon the little stuff - small acts where their personal space is invaded, whether its being stared at and photographed in a cornershop, having their hair touched, or being touched inappropriately - that really resonates. Darwah delivers a charismatic performance which allows moments of happiness, as well as ranges of pain and anguish, and ultimately shows a strength of character, in a spoken-word sequence towards the end, which displays their inner resolve and dignity. Rossi brings this all together superbly well, in a video which features terrific cinematography from DoP Charlie Knight. On the project Darkwah has said: “As soon as I saw the treatment, I knew I wanted to be a part of this project," says Darkwah. "It’s all of the things I’ve experienced many times over. It’s so important that aggressions and micro-aggressions are spoken about outside of the LGBTQIA+ community. We know these things. We experience them - sometimes at the hands of those in our community but more so by those outside of it."Having these occurrences shown at this level in conjunction with an artist like Elderbrook, I hope will not only generate more conversation but result in change for the better as people check the ways in which they interact with performers, Queer performers and Queer people. I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of this project. I’m super excited for the change it will start to incite.”Jordan Rossi adds: “With Queer culture moving into the mainstream you’d think this would be a great time for Queer liberation but actually it’s far from it. More than ever before, we’re put into a box and forced to try and make our Queerness palatable for so many audiences. As a LGBTQ+ working director and photographer, I’m still excluded from so many conversations and projects which is why it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to craft this narrative and film."A big expression of gratitude goes to Elderbrook, his team and the record label who have let us tell this story freely and authentically, whilst supporting us at every step of the process.”The support from Elderbrook and Parlophone marks the start of a number of LGBTQIA+ activations that support the community. These include an Instagram Live session on Elderbrook's Instagram platform, featuring Jordan Rossi and Darkwah talking about the video, on Monday October 25th at 6pm (BST).
