Oliver Murray directs a short documentary celebrating the making of a Beatles song that was finally completed and released in the mid-Nineties - 25 years after the band broke up.Thirty years later, and as a tie-in with remastering and rerelease of the Beatles Anthology project, Murray's film about Free As A Bird - written by John Lennon and discovered among his personal recordings - includes footage from the recording of the track in 1994, interspersed with narration from the band, and an intriguing central focus on a resurfaced Lennon recording. This follows Murray's short doc about the last ever Beatles song, Now And Then, also plucked from Lennon's trove of home recordings, a couple of years ago. And it's an informative and fun dive into the makings of arguably the last truly memorable Beatles song, while also being a meditation on what it means to create after great loss.
