Doechii 'Denial Is A River' by James Mackel & Carlos Acosta

Promonews - 17th Jan 2025
James Mackel and Carlos Acosta turn Doechii's confessions on the ups and downs of fame into a replay of an '80s, '90s sitcom, where the singer's on-screen character in the show goes through big changes.
It's brilliantly executed - fast, funny and the device of the Fresh Prince and Cosby Show-era sitcom fits the character of the track. Denial Is A River is a conversation between Doechii and her psychoanalyst alter-ego which echoes the late 80s of De La Soul - and the whipsmart collaborations between Queen Latifah and Monie Love.
Ultimately, the track is about really serious stuff - and bad stuff happens. But the use of comedy, in both the song and the video (up to the explosive ending), is a great move. Â
