Hot Chip 'Random Violence' by Jack Cole

David Knight - 22nd Oct 2026
Jack Cole directs the video for Hot Chip's Random Violence - a tribute to the late Keith McIvor, the Scottish producer, DJ, and label founder who co-founded the Glasgow club night Optimo, at the music venue Sub Club.
The video is a very English celebration of the human spirit, featuring the all-female progressive Morris dancing group Boss Morris, and brilliant costume design work by Michelle May, who dressed the band, the dancers and everyone else who takes part in the folk-dance-related revelry captured by Cole and DoP Mtthew Envin Taylor.
Michelle even does a new version of the head-to-toe leaf costumes she first created for Dougal Wilson's video for Goldfrapp's A&E - and again in one or two more Wilson projects.
“Last year in September our old friend and brilliant DJ Keith McIvor of Optimo in Glasgow passed away after a diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumour a few months earlier," explains Hot Chip's Joe Goddard. "He largely inspired the words of the song. He was a passionate music lover and a staunch believer in socialism. Many of the words relate directly to his death and to memories of being in Sub Club in Glasgow where we met 20 years ago.”
Discussing the video, Al Doyle from the band says: “We invited some woodland spirits, cursed animals and crazed dancers to join us in a celebration of humanity, remembrance and resistance. The genesis of the idea came from the Optimo Espookio Halloween parties we experienced at Sub Club and we wanted to capture that feeling in the video. It was exactly as much fun as it looks, which is to say we had an absolute blast.”
