The Proclaimers 'You May Offend' by Douglas Mackinnon

Rob Ulitski - 30th June 2026

Douglas Mackinnon directs a visual for legendary Scottish duo The Proclaimers that approaches important issues raised in their new song - fear, surveillance and tolerance - in an imaginative way.

The video for You May Offend - a collaboration between Emmy & BAFTA award winners Mackinnon (Sherlock, Dr Who, Good Omens) in partnership with Peter Anderson Animation - is anchored around the idea of anachronistic listening machines, which hear everything in the world. Erected across beaches, rooftops, famous landmarks and landscapes, silent operators search for dangerous thoughts, scanning for offensive statements and language.

Aesthetically feeling like a mix between modern dystopia and vintage surrealism, it's an unexpected yet fitting visual treatment with excellent creative work across the board.
