Charli xcx ft John Cale 'House' by Mitch Ryan

David Knight - 18th Nov 2025
One of the more unexpected collaborations of recent times has resulted in a video by Mitch Ryan to send a shiver down your spine.
It's not the first time that the veteran artist and producer John Cale has teamed with a younger female artist to great effect. There's Corner Of My Sky with Kelly Lee Owens - and that led to a brilliantly absurd video directed by Kasper Häggström, starring Michael Sheen.
But Cale with Charli xcx is a different ballgame. On the track the viola he played in the Velvet Underground comes out for the first time in a while. And the video for House adds a great deal through the brilliance of its craft.
A set of sumptuous Gothic portraits that investigates darkness and enforce the idea of Cale's psychological hold over Charli itself. Brilliant work by DoP Ben Carey - who has worked on most of the recent Charli videos - and Ryan, following his UKMVA-nominated collab with Charli on party 4 U.
